Now that "Avatar" star Sam Worthington has returned from the distant star system in which the planet Pandora resides, bringing back with him a $77 million opening weekend for the sci-fi action flick, where will the Australian actor go from here? What will 2010 and beyond look like for one of the year's breakout stars?

"Clash of the Titans" After the holidays, Worthington will head back to Britain for reshoots on this remake of the low-tech 1981 flick based on the Greek legend of Perseus. MTV News got a first look at the production when we visited the set this past summer. There, the actor promised us the film would take the original's action sequences and "raise the Richter scale to 11." Early trailers, »

While we continue to await evidence that Aussie actor Sam Worthington is qualified to wear the A-list label, he keeps working on more opportunities to prove it. The impending blockbuster star (Avatar, Clash Of The Titans) is now attached to an adaptation of the upcomig Radical Comics series The Last Days Of American Crime. Worthington would presumably not be playing the character on the cover. The book comes from prolific comic writer Rick Remender (Fear Agent, Punisher) and artist Greg »

Because its a Friday and we’re all rushing out to see The Twilight Saga: New Moon right now, we’re going to give you this news because its cool, but it won’t be with our usual flourish and editorialized commentary. Sorry if that disappoints anyone but “Team Jacob” needs us so we’re on the way.

Here’s a cool bit of news from our friends at radical Publishing which is, actually, pretty radical. Check it out from the official (and radical) press release:

To sweeten the deal, American Crime already has a face. An Australian one. Mania is reporting that Sam Worthington has signed on to play the series' star criminal, Graham Brick.

American Crime is set in a near-future where the government has found a way to kill the criminal impulse in its citizens. That's good for everyone but the criminals, and chaos erupts as the unsavory element goes mad trying to get in one last job. One of these men is Graham Brick, who is in the midst of planning a big heist, and gets to watch all his best laid plans fall apart in a bloody fashion. Avatar's Sam Worthington is clearly not done with science fiction - he's attached to star in near-future tale The Last Days Of American Crime. Sam Worthington In Yet Another Sci-Fi Film

19 November 2009 10:50 PM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Terminator Salvation, Avatar, and now The Last Days of American Crime – Aussie actor Sam Worthington seems to have certainly found his genre in Science fiction!

Based on the Radical Publishing comic, The Last Days of American Crime has a pretty original – if sinister twist on the traditional heist movie, Mania has more:

The comic book, created and written by Rick Remender and illustrated by Greg Tocchini, is a heist thriller told against a sci fi backdrop. In a near-future America, news has broken that, in a matter of weeks, the government is set to roll out mind-control technology that will kill the criminal impulse in all citizens. Chaos descends on America’s cities as the country braces for the new order. Career criminal Graham Brick is forced to accelerate the heist of his career with an untested new crew in order to beat the deadline. What could possibly go wrong? »

Sam Worthington and Bradley Cooper to Solve the Texas Killing Fields?

19 November 2009 9:13 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

It used to be that I thought Gerard Butler was attaching himself to way too many movies for his own good, and I made fun of him for it. Well guess what? Compared to Sam Worthington, Gerard Butler was an amateur. A scant day after Worthington was attached to the sci-fi “The Last Days of American Crime”, he’s now being rumored to be taking part in another movie — the based-on-true crime film “The Texas Killing Fields” with Bradley Cooper, who is himself on quite the roll after the mega success of “The Hangover”. Apparently the film gained notoriety when Danny Boyle mentioned it earlier this year as one of the scripts he was considering post-”Slumdog Millionaire”, but according to Boyle, the script was so dark and so fantastic that it would never get made unless you got together “half a dozen super megastars” for the studio to even consider footing the bill. »

Sam Worthington Will Witness The Last Days of American Crime

19 November 2009 3:44 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Even though Terminator Salvation was a lackluster installment in that franchise, no fault could be placed on Sam Worthington who, in my opinion, showed up Christian Bale on screen. And with the starring role in Avatar later this year, he's quickly becoming one of the most demanded actors in Hollywood. And we can add another project to his roster as Mania reports Worthington has signed on for an adaptation of Rick Remender's upcoming comic series, The Last Days of American Crime, a futuristic story where the government is set to roll out mind-control technology that will kill the criminal impulse in all citizens. Of course chaos descends on America's cities as the country braces for the new order, and career criminal Graham Brick (Worthington) is forced to accelerate the heist of his career with an untested new crew in order to beat the deadline. Sam Worthington To Star In ‘American Crime’

19 November 2009 9:56 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Rising star Sam Worthington continues to build quite a career for himself: he’s already starred in Terminator Salvation, and has both James Cameron’s Avatar and the remake of Clash of the Titans on deck, two huge properties I think you’ll agree. Now, adding to that ever-growing list of Worthington movies is The Last Days of American Crime, an adaptation of an upcoming comic book/graphic novel of the same name from Radical Publishing.

Comic creator Rick Remender created and wrote The Last Days of American Crime, and Mania reports that he will also pen the script for the big-screen adaptation. The comic is described as, “a heist thriller told against a sci-fi backdrop.” From Radical’s website, here’s the synopsis:

Sam Worthington Signs on for Adaptation of Upcoming Comic Series The Last Days Of American Crime

19 November 2009 9:02 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Here’s hoping that Sam Worthington is the real deal.  He was good in Terminator Salvation (although he had some trouble nailing down an American accent and occasionally lapsed back into his native Australian) but he’ll have to win over audiences in a big way with his leading performances in Avatar and Clash of the Titans if he wants to lessen the inevitable backlash towards him for having the audacity to be a rising star in Hollywood.

Thankfully, Worthington is playing it smart and not trying to be the biggest star in every upcoming blockbuster.  He’ll just be one of the biggest co-stars in the upcoming adaptation of the upcoming comic book series The Last Days of American Crime.  Hit the jump for details.

Here’s how Mania.com describes the plot of the sci-fi crime thriller:

Sam Worthington Celebrating The Last Days Of American Crime

19 November 2009 7:06 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

If every casting announcement that comes out daily is to be believed, Sam Worthington will be starring in every movie between now and 2015, and at the rate he's going, will probably be cast as Bilbo in The Hobbit. Just as Zach Galifianakis was seemingly everywhere this summer, so Worthington is now-- and it's really hard to know exactly which among these projects is destined to pan out. Today Mania.com is reporting that Worthington will star in an adaptation of The Last Days of American Crime, a graphic novel about the final weeks before a new mind-control device wipes out the criminal impulse in all Americans. Worthington will play a member of a team of career criminals pulling off one last score before the big change. According to the book's creator Rick Remender, "It's really motivated by Mamet's Heist film and James Ellroy's [novel] American Tabloid." Michael Schwartz and Barry »

Terminator: Salvation” star Sam Worthington has signed on to appear in the film adaptation of Rick Remender's upcoming miniseries “The Last Days of American Crime."

Created and written by Remender with artist Greg Tocchini, “Last Days” takes place in the near future where the U.S. government is about to implement a new technology that will make it impossible for anyone to commit a crime. Following the revelation of this plan, a downtrodden career criminal named Graham Brick is forced to quickly assemble a team to help him pull off what may be the last heist in American history.

According to Mania.com, Worthington will portray Kevin Cash, a safecracker recruited by Brick who may be a dangerously unstable sociopath.

After his turn as the Human/Terminator hybrid Marcus Wright in last summer’s “Terminator: Salvation”, Worthington’s next film will be the hotly anticipated “Avatar” by director James Cameron. »
