High Definition: Joss Whedon's Dollhouse Finally Hits Its Stride—Just In Time For Cancellation

15 December 2009 12:00 AM, PST | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

If Fox had canceled Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse halfway through the show’s first season, I wouldn’t have shed a tear. It looked like the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog had finally created a dud. The concept was intriguing, but the episodic adventures of a gorgeous body that could be filled with whatever personality her handlers created for her were a little silly and a lot creepy. The main Doll, Echo (Eliza Dushku), would go on engagements as a hostage negotiator, a bodyguard or, most often, a lover, and it felt a lot like »

Bioware is one company that takes its voiceover work seriously. For Star Wars: The Old Republic, Bioware hired over 100 actors to voice over 40 novels worth of written material. And now Bioware has announced that it has hired several top-notch voice actors for the heavily-anticipated sci-fi sequel, Mass Effect 2.

Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder of Bioware and Group General Manager of the RPG/Mmo Group of EA, reasoned that,

“[e]motionally engaging narrative is a key design pillar for Bioware, and the top-notch voice talent in Mass Effect 2 helps drive this goal. A lot of people are saying that Dollhouse is getting awesome now that it's been canceled, which is sad.  But isn't that Whedon's way?  Sometimes you gotta give the man some time to get into a grove, but once he does, it's glorious.

Fox has released promo photos for the two-hour episode that will be airing on December 11th, along with a short synopsis.  You can view both of them below.

Sundance '10: Bloody Stills: Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

7 December 2009 6:28 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

With its world premiere happening at the Sundance Film Festival, some new stills have oozed online for Voltage Pictures' latest horror comedy Tucker and Dale vs. Evil starring Alan Tudyk ("Firefly") and Tyler Labine ("Reaper") and directed by Eli Craig (The Tao of Pong). Dig 'em while they're warm!

Synopsis

In the vein of Shaun of the Dead, Tucker & Dale is a wild, wonky tale of two hillbilly buddies trying to survive their vacation in the woods when they are mistaken for killers by a gang of college kids. Our heroes valiantly save one of the college girls from drowning but are accused of wrongdoing. The chase ensues, not treating the students too well, leaving us with a gory but hilarious tale of two hillbillies and their hearts of gold.

Episode Titles: "The Public Eye" & "The Left Hand"

Written By: Andrew Chambliss / Tracy Bellomo

Synopsis: Senator Daniel Perrin (Alexis Denisof) continues his investigation into the Rossum Corporation, but what he finds — and what the Dollhouse crew expects — turns out to be drastically more deadly and life-changing than he could have ever imagined.

In light of the revelation that Perrin isn't who he thinks he is, the senator finds an unlikely ally in Echo (Eliza Dushku) as the two attempt to escape the clutches of the D.C. branch of the Dollhouse — but beyond the authorities looking to recapture them, Perrin and Echo must contend with the brilliant Bennett Halverson (Summer Glau), the D.C. Dollhouse's technician who has a score to settle with Echo.

The Rossum Candidate: The reveal that Senator Daniel Perrin, the man leading the charge against Rossum and the Dollhouse, is in fact a doll himself was pretty darn cool. »

Cool Stuff: Serenity Scaled Ship Prop Replica

30 November 2009 3:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Sideshow Collectibles have teamed with Quantum Mechanix to produce a Serenity - 'The Big Damn Replica' Scaled Prop Replica. The titular ship of Joss Whedon's sci-fi western television series/movie has existed only in digital form only - until now. More than three years in the making, Serenity - The Big Damn Replica, has been painstakingly crafted to be absolutely screen-accurate in every aspect. Unlike most ships from science fiction, Serenity was designed from the ground up to be as realistic as possible, from her floor plan to her construction, using real-world components and manufacturing processes. As one of her creators observed, the idea was to make Serenity so real, fans could see themselves walking her decks. With such a sense of place and familiarity, viewers would never feel lost in this Firefly-Class Transport. Now for the bad news: This highly detailed scaled prop replica is limited to 1,000 pieces worldwide, »

New TV Shows To Be Thankful for In 2009! ABC Brings Us 4 New Shows We Love But Fox’s Glee Takes Top Spot!

29 November 2009 5:34 PM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

Well ABC seemed to be out in the lead for having the most shows we were thankful for in 2009 with 4 of their new shows making our list. In second place was the USA channel with 2, while Syfy, Fox, HBO and NBC all had 1 on the list as well. I was surprised that CBS didn’t make our list but with so many already good shows previous to 2009 they didn’t have to add a lot to their programming schedule. Glee got our top spot while Flashforward barely made the list.

1. Glee

Couldn’t think of any other show to go here than this one. A complete surprise this musical dramedy series from of all people, Ryan Murphy, the guy who brought us Nip/Tuck. This series is a massive 180 from his repetoire but thats okay because we love it. Everything from the weekly musical selections, to the talented group of »

Jonathan Bernstein: Aerial view of America

27 November 2009 4:15 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

On Us telly this month, V gets a bland reboot, Wanda Sykes heads a rash of uninspiring new late-night talkshows, and Sex Rehab marks a new low in reality TV

Probe a geek of a certain age about his recollections of the cult 80s alien invasion series V and he – there's no question it'll be a he – will have only one response: the moment the alien commander extended her jaw until it was a foot long and then swallowed a gerbil. Over the course of two miniseries and a sporadically scheduled season of one-hour episodes, V chronicled the occupation of Earth by a seemingly benign race of visitors who swiftly revealed themselves to be evil lizards hiding under lifelike rubber flesh fomenting plans to take over the planet and colonise the flabbergasted inhabitants. V's journey from insanely addictive to entirely unwatchable was speedy. But it remained on the air long »

Justice League: Crisis On Two Earths Trailer

25 November 2009 12:48 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Warner Home Entertainment’s newest animated effort featuring DC Comics Heroes and villains: Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, arrives on DVD February 23rd, 2010.  The film features villains from the classic DC Crime Syndicate.  Check out an image and the trailer after the jump.

Created back when goatees marked your obvious ill intent, the Csa is made up of evil, alternate reality versions of Earth’s own heroes, who didn’t wear masks!  Though the Csa met it’s end in the original Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline, they none-the-less returned years later in a classic story arc by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely.

Like Green Lantern: First Flight and Warner’s other recent DC Comics Home Entertainment entries, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, will carry a rating of PG-13, reminding us that Warner doesn’t just consider these super hero adventures as “strictly for kids”.  Though February seems far away, »

Joss Whedon Nets Vanguard Award

Joss Whedon has done so much more than just work in the TV and film industry. He's created entire meticulous universes for his characters and fans to explore, and that's no easy task. Thankfully the man is about to get his due.

Variety reports that The Producers Guild of America has selected Joss Whedon as the recipient of its Vanguard Award, which recognizes achievements in new media and technology.

Whedon is a producer, writer, director, and creator for TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," "Firefly," and "Dollhouse" with film scripts including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Toy Story, Alien Resurrection and Titan A.E. He's penned the comic book series Fray and created and produced Internet series "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog."

His next feature Cabin in the Woods, which he co-wrote with Drew Goddard, is currently in post-production and is scheduled to be released sometime in 2011 by MGM. Given the studio's recent financial problems, »

Joss Whedon to be Honored by Producers Guild

23 November 2009 10:35 AM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Joss Whedon seems to be the jack of all trades.  Fox can cancel as many of his shows as that they want, but other people are still lining up to give him awards and accolades.  Ok, maybe not lining up, per se, but there's at least one organization that is honoring him.

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) will be presenting Whedon with the 2010 Vanguard Award at the 21st Annual PGA Awards ceremony on Sunday, January 24, 2010.  The award is meant to recognize those with achievements in new media and technology, so it's likely that he's getting it for his efforts in branching out into new internet media with Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (though it's likely meant to honor a culmination of his achievements).  Past winners of the award include George Lucas, James Cameron and John Lasseter.

Whedon is a producer, writer, director, and creator for such hit television programs as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer, »

Are Webisodes the Future of TV? ‘Girl Number 9′ Thinks So

23 November 2009 8:13 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

I’ve got a new addiction and it comes in the form of made-for-Web shows. The last one Screen Rant brought to you was Broken Toy by Forewarned Films and before that we introduced you to Joss Whedon’s  Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.  Now we want to introduce you to a great 6-episode crime-thriller from writer James Moran.

A lot of you may not have heard of James Moran but you may have seen his work on shows like Doctor Who, Torchwood, Crusoe and the great under-rated horror/comedy/thriller, Severance. Moran has now moved from writing scripts to directing short films and started with the enjoyably creepy Girl Number 9. Each episode is about 5 minutes, but the script and acting feel like a 45-minute network show. It leaves you wanting to watch the next, wanting to see how it ends and asking the question “Can You Save Her? »
