Roger is a scared, aimless thirty-something vomited out of the 80's. Roger Dodger so he's a homophobe? That's a bit oblique. I think he's trying to sidestep the Rogering he's supposed to be dispensing, in search of some motherly love. His deceased mother is a genuinely sad backdrop to his thoughts that and he asks his (older, but removing her makeup) partner for the comfort of sleeping over. Her rejection of him for a younger man is a rejection of these increasing clots of emotion, and Isabella Rosselini dispatches this small but important role with particularly froid sangfroid. The others do a good job of highlighting the attraction of the genuine whilst behaving like modern Manhattinees Jesse Eisenberg's Nick had me thinking that this was a cult coming-of-ager, like Igby Goes Down but with a brain. I had the stirrings of pique at the close-up, low-level, it's claustrophobia, geddit? jiggy-cam throughout the film but the organic trio of script, plot and Scott can't be usurped. 7/10
