Season 7, Episode 1: Lucky

5 February 1974
Set in Liverpool in the early 70s, the film tells the story of Samuel 'lucky' Ubooto (Paul Barber), a half African, half Irish man in his 20s whose decidedly unlucky career as a criminal has resulted in a series of stretches in prison for theft. The story follows Lucky on the day of his release from his latest sentence. As he wanders around Liverpool, not really belonging anywhere, it becomes clear that he is still waiting for his father, a man who has long since abandoned Lucky and his family, to return and take him back 'home' to Africa.

8 April 1980
The story concerns the relationship between Peter (Richard Gibson), a 15 year old boy, and Mr Faulkner (Maurice Denham), an old man whom he befriends. Mr Faulkner used to be a school teacher but had retired after allegations were made about him by a pupil. There was still gossip about him in the town. Mr Faulkner teaches Peter a lot about literature and introduces him to poetry and when Peter returns to school the two of them correspond. The friendship between them is threatened when Peter starts going out with Sue who disapproves of him spending time with the old man. In the end Peter confronts Mr Faulkner with the gossip but he refuses to discuss it. Peter later writes to Mr Faulkner but for the first time does not receive a reply.
