The Hangover star Zach Galifianakis is certainly making a name for himself as of late: after starring in the $461 million comedy smash hit this summer, he has garnered himself a slew of roles (which is unsurprising – he was hilarious in The Hangover), the latest of which is voicing children’s nursery rhyme character, Humpty Dumpty, in the upcoming Shrek spin-off movie, Puss In Boots.
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Galifianakis is in talks to voice Humpty Dumpty, and if cast he’ll be joining the voice of Puss In Boots himself, Antonio Banderas, as well as Salma Hayek who’s voicing “Kitty.” The spin-off will be written by Tom Wheeler, and will be a prequel (an origin story, we’ve heard) leading up to the feisty feline’s meeting-up with Shrek and Co. in Shrek 2.

It can be a painful thing to watch an edgy and fresh comedic talent get sucked into the black hole of Hollywood, but I can't be truly disappointed with any choices that Zach Galifianakis makes. I'm still just overjoyed to see the guy's career take off, and it's kind of fun to see him in some of these big family blockbusters like G-Force. I just hope he never stops taking risks and making the quirky little films on the side. That being said, you can't help but wince when you hear that he is currently in talks to voice the character Humpty Dumpty in the upcoming Shrek spin-off, Puss in Boots. The Shrek franchise has turned into a behemoth over the years, and Puss in Boots would actually be the fifth major film in the series. There is also a Shrek 4 on the way (now titled Shrek Forever After »

Zach Galifianakis is in talks to voice the part of Humpty Dumpty in the Shrek spin-off, Puss In Boots.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Galifianakis, who had his big break with The Hangover this summer, will help tell the story of the events leading up to the feline assassin's first meeting with Shrek and friends, which took place in Shrek 2. Antonio Banderas, who voiced Puss In Boots in Shrek 2 and Shrek The Third, will reprise the role in the new film, and will be joined by his Desperado co-star Salma Hayek. Tom Wheeler is writing the screenplay for the prequel after Chris Miller, who co-directed and co-wrote Shrek The Third, wrote an earlier draft. Miller will now be directing the DreamWorks Animation movie.
The film is scheduled for a November 4, 2011 release.

Zach Galifianakis could crack his own egg if his negotiations are successful to star as the talking and future broken shelled Humpty Dumpty in Puss-in-Boots, the spinoff CG movie based on Antonio Banderas' supporting swashbuckling feline from the last two Shrek films.
Originally planned as a direct-to-dvd movie, DreamWorks has now bumped up the budget and made it a feature film slated for a November 4, 2011 release. In the film we'll see what Puss-in-Boots was up to before he met up with Shrek and Donkey in Shrek 2. Salma Hayek has already been cast in the animated film which is being directed by Chris Miller (co-director of Shrek the Third.)
The Humpty Dumpty character won't be appearing in Shrek Goes Fourth, the green ogre's next film which is slated for a May 21, 2010 opening. »

Because the world can never get enough Shrek, we've known for some time that an upcoming spinoff film, Puss in Boots, has been in the works. Now it seems like things are finally moving forward. The increasingly bankable Zach Galifianakis is currently in talks to voice Humpty Dumpty. He'll be joining Antonio Banderas as the title character, and Salma Hayek as "Kitty" (this is their post-Robert Rodriguez reunion?!). The film will cover the feline's adventures before Shrek 2. Tom Wheeler is covering the screenwriting duties, and Shrek the Third co-writer/co-director Chris Miller is directing. And if that's not enough Shrek-verse for you, don't forget that the hotly anticipated Shrek Forever After is still slated to hit on May 21, 2010. Puss will also show up in that film, which will surely make 2010 the dream year for the small subset of Antonio Banderas obsessed Furries. For a series that's rich »

I’m still in awe of how Zach Galifianakis, a terrific stand-up comedian who mostly unknown in the American mainstream, has become one of the biggest stars in Hollywood after his performance in “The Hangover”. Even better, his performance in that film is true to his style of comedy. I never felt that he was trying to be something he wasn’t.
I’m trying to keep this in mind as I read the news that he may be voicing the role of Humpty Dumpty in the upcoming “Shrek” spin-off, “Puss in Boots”. Hit the jump for details.
“Puss in Boots” will be a spin-off/prequel to “Shrek 2″ as the story (scripted by Tom Wheeler) leads up to when Puss (voiced by Antonio Banderas) met Shrek and Donkey in the second film and then totally stole the picture. Salma Hayek will co-star. If Galifianakis decides to take the role of Humpty Dumpty, »

The U.S. theatrical release of "The Smurfs" is facing a delay. Two weeks shy of Disney's revelation that "Tron Legacy" will be released on the same date as the planned release for "Smurfs", Sony Pictures came out with a new date, placing the CG-animation out of the studio's 2010 slate, as reported by Coming Soon.
Pulling out "Smurfs" from the crowded December 17, 2010 schedule, Sony pushed back the movie for about seven months to the July 29, 2011 release. With the new date given, this 3-D movie will be available in theaters a week after Marvel Studios releases "The First Avenger: Captain America" on July 22, 2011.
Sony's decision to move "Smurfs" has been predicted by many earlier since the studio has two feature films coming out on the same day, "Smurfs" and "The Green Hornet". Beside, if it stayed on the date, it will also have to compete with "Tron Legacy" and Warner Bros. Pictures »

-- Empire Online isn't technically a blog, but they do put together some reaully fun features. Features like "The 50 Greatest Movie Sequels," which pretty much speaks for itself. "Shrek 2" closes out the list, but the number one pick? Beating out "Godfather Part II" at number two, "Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back" at number six (Blasphemy!!!!) is James Cameron's "Aliens." Cameron gets two in the top 5, with "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" coming in at number three. (Empire Online)
-- Cinematical launched a new regular feature, Shelf Life, which takes a look back at movies that are more than five years old to judge whether the good ones hold up and whether the bad ones got an unfair condemnation. Their first pick? Sensibly (what with "Avatar" on the way), James Cameron's "Titanic." The verdict? You'll have to read the writeup to find out. (Cinematical)

A few months ago we posted about the fact that the upcoming Shrek spin-off movie featuring Puss in Boots (voiced by Antonio Banderas) would be an origin story. We learned that the movie would deal with the early years of the feisty feline, and later we also learned that it would feature new characters (read: no Shrek, no Princess Fiona, no Donkey).
However, thanks to Latino Review, we get word that the above may not be entirely the case. El Guapo from Lr got a chance to talk to Banderas at a junket for his new movie, The Other Man, where he asked the actor about how the Puss in Boots movie was going. On top of revealing an apparent new Halloween special featuring the character (which I’ll get to in a sec), Banderas revealed that the spin-off will take place between Shrek 4 and 5.

The feature-film Smurfs is being smurfed by Raja Gosnell (Scooby Doo, Slither) and the script was smurfed by David Stern and David Weiss (Shrek 2, Shrek 3). Today we have a smurfy look at the first teaser poster for The Smurfs 3-D, then below that some behind the smurf stills with the unfinished wire animation. Take a smurf for yourself:

Columbia Pictures is developing a CG-adaptation of "The Smurfs", and has released a promo image of the upcoming movie in a magazine. Scanned and posted online by PVCBlue, the first look gives a taste of how the blue-colored character will look like in the feature film, along with a reminder that the movie will come out in theaters holiday 2010.
Little is known about the storyline of this family animation film. Such characters as Papa Smurf, Smurfette and the villainous Gargamel are expected to appear in it. David Stem and David Weiss, the writers of "Shrek 2" and "Shrek the Third", will provide the script alongside scribe Audrey Wells.
The movie that uses a mix of live action and CG will be directed by "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" helmer Raja Gosnell. "The Smurfs" is expected to be released in both 2-D and 3-D theaters across the U.S. on December 17, 2010.

Trivia time: What is the highest-grossing animated film in foreign box office history? Who would have ever guessed it is now Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs.
It deserves some qualifiers. To begin with, the U.S. box office for Ice Age has been steady but not spectacular, so because of that, this will never become the highest-grossing animated film worldwide. For the foreseeable future, that will continue to be Shrek 2, with over $900 million it total ticket sales. But Ice Age has hit $732 million, which puts it within reach of The Lion King and maybe the third Shrek movie, close to the top 20 films ever made.
But the real story here is the international markets, which comprise an almost unprecedented 75% of all tickets sold for the new Ice Age. We talked earlier this summer about Sony not investing that much into the U.S. release of Angels »

Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks Studios is to restart production on a host of new movies after landing a $825 million ($550 million) cash injection to fund future ventures.
The studio's future looked bleak after it ended its partnership with Hollywood giant Paramount in 2008, which left it owing the company around $30 million (£20 million) for the rights to a number of upcoming projects.
Spielberg, who is a partner in DreamWorks Studios, was forced to use $13 million (£8.7 million) of his own money so the studio could keep the catalogue of movies it had in the works.
But after a string of lucrative backers, including Indian conglomerate Reliance and a new distribution deal with Disney, DreamWorks is back in business.
In a statement, the company's partners explain, "With this financing, DreamWorks will eventually make five to six films per year. DreamWorks anticipates starting its first film for the new studio later this year. They have been actively acquiring properties and developing projects for release in 2010."
"The Walt Disney Company, Disney will handle marketing and distribution of the studio's films around the world, except for India where Reliance subsidiary Reliance Big Entertainment will retain distribution rights."
DreamWorks biggest hits include Shrek 2, Dreamgirls, Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar. »
