The Notable Films of 2010: Part Six

The Last Airbender

Opens: July 2nd 2010

Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.

Analysis: Its been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan who started it as a household name with labels of a moodern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".

Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of his hit cartoon series »

Killer Imports: Coweb

16 November 2009 9:03 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Killer Imports [1] is a regular feature on Film Junk where we explore foreign-language films from around the world that haven’t yet had their chance to shine. Whenever I appear on the Film Junk podcast and review a film, I invariably have a negative opinion. And when I write film reviews for the Film Junk web site, I invariably have a positive opinion, even for films that many Film Junk readers would consider bad. The discrepancy has to do with the fact that I don’t get to choose which films to review on the podcast. I find it easier to give reasons on why I like something rather than why I don’t like something. So for me, writing a positive review is easier to write and seems more worthwhile since someone may be influenced by a positive review to watch a film that I feel deserves attention. No »

Rotten Tomatoes Picks the Worst Movies of the Decade

25 September 2009 12:27 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

When it comes to reviewing movies, I've always found that one of the most difficult things is not deciding whether a movie is good or bad, but rather, deciding whether a movie is bad or downright terrible. Make no mistake, there are many different levels of bad movies, but does anyone really care to get down to the nitty gritty of debating which ones are slightly better than others? It just seems like a colossal waste of energy. Fortunately, the good folks over at Rotten Tomatoes [1] have recently decided to sift through their vast review archives to give us the definitive Worst of the Worst list [2] for the past 10 years in film. I don't think there are too many surprises here, although the good news is that I think quite a few of these are movies that no one has seen. Maybe now they'll finally find the audience they deserve! »

What do Joe Pesci, Mark Hamill, The Rock, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kevin Bacon, and Steven Seagal all have to do with Zombieland? Find out in our exclusive interview with the screenwriters of the upcoming zombie comedy - Rhett Reese (R) and Paul Wernick (L). You may not recognize them (this is their first feature), but they're going to hit it big with this movie, I'm sure of that. Although I haven't seen Zombieland yet, I was still able to talk with Rhett and Paul about zombies, screenwriting, 3D movies, and great action scenes. Here's another excerpt to whet your appetite: "It's sort of the Midnight Run of zombie movies." Oh and if you haven't watched the first trailer or the most recent red band trailer for Zombieland, both of those are great primers for this interview, so fire them up first before diving into this interview headfirst! Steven Seagal to Be in Robert Rodriguez's Machete?

27 July 2009 5:36 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

According to Moviehole it seems that action star Steven Seagal (Half Past Dead) might be playing a part in Robert Rodriguez's Machete movie.

There are currently rumors out there stating that everyone from Robert De Niro to Jonah Hill are going to be in this movie.

Apparently, there has been a lot of back and forth between Moviehole and Seagal's representatives. First he might be doing the movie, then he's not doing the movie... but now it appears like if certain "conditions" can be worked out, Seagal might actually be in the film.

Rodriguez plans to start shooting this project very soon. As soon as we have more concrete information on this movie we will bring it to you.

Close your eyes and imagine you are in a producer’s office. “The kids are going crazy for these vampires!  It’s like, an unquenchable thirst with them or something?  We gotta’ make a Vampire picture and we’re gonna need a bankable star.  I know - Steven Segal!” And, thus, Against the Dark came into the world. In this scene we can see someone who isn’t Steven Segal (it is actually Tanoai Reed, better known to the world as The Rock’s cousin) facing off a swarm...well, okay, a few growling and angry Vampires.  Enjoy! »

Metallica are to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The heavy metal act - who shot to fame in the early 80s - will be honored in April alongside former Yardbirds guitarist Jeff Beck and hip-hop pioneers Run Dmc.

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich revealed he and his bandmates are delighted with the honor.

He said: "It shows we are part of the big picture. We are a link in a chain of everyone that's come before and everyone that's come after you. I love how it all fits together."

Jeff - who has collaborated with artists including Sir Mick Jagger and Stevie Wonder - was previously inducted into the Hall of Fame with his former band The Yardbirds in 1992.
