Below average, 13 November 2003
Author: poisonrock29 from Birmingham, England
Hell Asylum has a similar storyline to HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, but don't expect it to be as entertaining. A group of young girls enter a haunted house in participation in a reality television show, if they last the night, they will recieve a million dollars. That's the whole story. Hell Asylum even plays like a reality television show by filming from the diffrent cameras located in the house, which are all black and white and often very snowy, add to that, the house is always in darkness so we get some confusing hard to watch footage of the girls getting killed. The death scenes were very bloody but it was hard to tell what was happening because of the darkness and snowy picture. On the plus side the characters were very interesting, each girl had a very diffrent personality to the next and i would have been more interested in seeing how they got along some more, but the girls began getting killed one by one before they even had a chance to settle in. My rating 4/10.

Meh, 12 March 2005

*SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT*
I bought this video for four bucks. Five lovely ladies check into the Hell Asylum. They are there to play the "Chill Challenge". It's a reality based TV show. If you get scared, you're booted out. The producer has rigged the house to scare the ladies and make a few bucks. Little does he know that the Hell Asylum is actually haunted! MOO-HA-HA! Haunted by what you ask? I don't care! MOO-HA-HA!
Well, this was lame. Not that I expected too much mind you, but this was pretty ho hum. "Hell Asylum" is one of those run of the mill B-movies that is instantly forgettable. Soon it will recede to the back of my B-movie watching memory, never to be heard from again. So you got five lovely ladies in the Hell Asylum and yet not one of them can lose their shirt? Tsk. Tsk. For shame. No nudity. Cheap gore. It has all that and less.
It's pointless to criticize such a lackluster piece of blah like this. It doesn't care. I don't care. No one cares. It's unanimous. Let's all just move on and let this sleeping dog lie.

Not too good, 23 November 2005
Author: stephendellabarca from New Zealand
This movie is all over the place. What the heck are those grim reaper dudes anyway. Apart from eating peoples insides and whacking up people's faces and dropping bones all over the place. It's junk and the title music sucks. A typical low budget crappy movie. Apart from the usual small time actors and a hardly known producer company what has this movie got going for it.
Some of the acting is OK i'll give it that but the the movie has no plot.
Nothing

Low-budget horror at it's most irritable and unimaginative worst, 25 March 2005
Author: lost-in-limbo from the Mad Hatter's tea party.
A group of girls enter a TV reality show, where they have to spend time in a haunted house doing specific tasks to win 1 million dollars, though no-one counted on real spirits killing the crew and contestants.
Well the plot idea is right out of The house on Haunted hill (1958)- but really this is nothing more then watching stunning young women get butchered to death and eaten by ghosts... literally! Well the idea for this film took no brainstorm.
The filmmakers came up with an incredibly dull and unimaginative film, that had trouble keeping my full interest and the running time is only 67mins! The script was tripe and extremely stilted, as you just groan at the clichés and stupid lines you hear and the acting... geez it was awfully over the top, no charisma or talent evident.
The blood and gore was just laughable- I just thought it was over-used and ridiculously lousy was that the end of a mop or noodles covered with fake blood as intestines?
The plot, where did it go? If you start off with one, you might as well finish it off. It's starts with introducing us to the TV reality show, the crooked host/director, the 5 female contestants and the history of the haunted place- but after this it goes off the rails, as you don't know what the heck is going on? There are no explanations why the ghosts are killing people, while the characters one by one just go and get knocked off. The characters were the usual one-dimensional stereotypes- but hardly engaging to care what happen to them. While the house itself is hardly atmospheric or chilling and the lighting was so dim it was hard to tell what was going on.
The camera work was pretty horrid, I think that they thought it was quite inventive- but it's not. The ghosts were 'fairly' eerie, well more the way they move and appear- but there nothing more then a person wearing a black cloak. What the film sorely lacks is tension and good scares.
Some of those interviews with the contestants to see why they are participating in this reality game are pretty ironic in what we are viewing in this piece of crap. While the satirical ending on the media producers was really platitudinous.
This film wasn't enjoyable enough to be entertaining, if you think it would be so bad it would be funny... it's no fun, it's a pretty miserable viewing.
Though it might be a REALLY cheap amateur film, that's no excuse for a lame story, script and a lack of suspense and chills.
What a turkey!

Gorefest, and not much else, 27 March 2002
Author: Peter Zimmerman from Texas
I am pro gore, or I would not have rented this movie. I applaud the marketers of this film, for the fact that it was available on DVD at my local video store means that someone made money off of this film. I do not know what full moon was thinking, but this has to be the dullest title ever associated with them. Not campy, not funny, not scary. The first DVD I have rented and felt I should have been PAID to watch.

It wasn't too good, but still fine..., 2 November 2002
Author: deadlybreathe from Latvia
I have finished watching it around 2 minutes ago. The movie had really cheap plot and FX, but the idea was nice. Most of it was copied from House on Haunted Hill, but it had couple of new features. The end, as for most Full Moon movies, was unhappy for the characters of the movie. But anyway I don't believe it's worth watching any money to see it.

The Best Recent Full Moon Flick I've Seen..., 21 May 2002
Author: XCoRyX from Philadelphia, PA, USA
Yeah thats right, this is the best full moon/tempe release i have seen in a long time.I rented this on a double feature dvd which also included prison of the dead. After being hugely let down by prison of the dead,i watched this one, hell asylum...and i was not disappointed or letdown at all.Infact i was quite entertained and will probably pick this up on dvd or vhs soon. The acting was very above average and i totally fell in love with tanya dempsey, and all of the other girls were very attractive, and made this one that lets you care about the characters. So for anyone liking the horror genre, this ones for you and highly recommended. This one teaches you that you can make a better movie then most big million dollar budgets with just $35,000.6/10

Not bad, 21 April 2002
Author: jonnykungfu from Louisiana
I bought the DVD for the bonus feature of Mulva: Zombie Ass Kicker. But this turned out to be pretty good. Trent Haaga is probably my all time favorite actor, and he wrote this, so it can't be bad. He also has a tiny part in this. My complaints are that it is way too short (65 minutes!) and that the static things got annoying after a while, plus there should have been SOME nudity, especially from the cute blonde chick. Joe Estevez is cool as hell and makes a small cameo. I am a new fan of Tempe now.

Not The exorcist but a great idea, 16 February 2002
Author: riotpoof1980 from Atlanta, GA
I work at a video store so i was able to rent this before its release date. Anyway I am a HUGE horror movie fan and this is why i rented this. It's not that bad i mean it wont win any awards or anything but it has a pretty cool idea. and you care about the characters. The plot is this cheesy network producer wants to produce this new relality based TV show(sorta like fear factor but with ghost and a $1 million dollar prize) about 5 girls all different spending the night in a haunted asylum and have to do certian task or be eleminated(litterly) there are a few twist and a really creepy unconventional ending. loaded with gore, no nudity which is unusual for a horror movie of this magnitude. while in the house the cheesy producer fakes scary things to boot of the contestants but little does he know theres something more than fake FX and evil out to get them. i give it a 2 1/2 out of 4 Stars i mean its not the best but its not bad either filmed like it is a relatiy based TV show which i think is cool great concept. for die hard horror movie fans B horror movie scream queen Brinke Stevens has a creepy cameo.

Bad production... enjoyable movie, 23 February 2006
Author: José Luis Rivera Mendoza (jluis1984) from Mexico
Danny Draven is a young direction that even when he has made a career directing no-budget b-movies, he manages to make them at least entertaining. His career seems to be on the rise after "Deathbed", a good effort that was produced by Stuart Gordon himself.
In this earlier effort, Draven tells another ghost story starring "Deathbed" star Tanya Dempsey. Taking elements of "House on Haunted Hill" and modern reality shows, we have five beautiful girls who enter a show named "Chill Challenge", where the contestants must endure a night in a "haunted house" in order to win a large sum of money. What they don't know, is that the house is really haunted, and flesh-eating specters will make the challenge a bit more difficult.
Now, this is definitely not a good movie, it has a production that is bad even for low-budget standards. Draven's direction is still a work in progress and it is obvious that many things were learned while making this movie. However, one thing that is worth to mention, is the superb performance of lead star Tanya Dempsey. For a newcomer to the genre she has everything that is needed to become the new scream Queen of this age. Her performance is what really makes the movie works and it saves the final project from being a worthless piece of b-cinema.
The rest of the cast is not that bad. Stacey Scowley gives a great performance too and the rest of the girls are not only beautiful, but also very convincing in their roles. The male cast is really a downer, but the girls really make up for it. Legendary Brinke Stevens has a small role in a blink-and-miss scene. Lovers of nudity will be disappointed but we still have a nice view of Dempsey in underwear.
Sadly, the great acting is probably the only good this movie has to offer as the rest of the movie is filled with troubles such as bad lighting and terribly bad gore. Draven's use of digital camera makes the movie look even worse as it seems that he had not mastered its use yet. While most of the problems seem to be due to the low budget, a lot can be blamed to the lack of experience of the crew.
Nevertheless, as the movie goes on it seems as if they were learning in the process as the beginning looks terribly bad compared to the end. Another thing is that the movie never gets boring, the script goes straight to the action and it never drags. For a simple ghost story that is truly an achievement, too bad that the rest of the aspect of the movie weren't up to the task.
Danny Draven has a brilliant future in horror as he showed in his most recent work, but this movie has really very little to root for. It is worth a watch for aspirant filmmakers and fans of independent films. It is not really as bad as some big budget productions out there. For a better Draven/Dempsey collaboration check out "Deathbed" instead. 5/10. Great acting... bad movie
