This Week on Stage: 'Fela!' rocks, Matthew Broderick disappoints

27 November 2009 6:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Former American Idol contestant Syesha Mercado may be the biggest known name in the revival of Dreamgirls that kicked off its national tour at Harlem's famed Apollo Theatre this week, but it's an unknown named Moya Angela who's generating all the buzz as Effie "I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" White, according to EW's Tanner Stransky. Also this week, the booty-shaking biographical Afrobeat musical Fela! (pictured at left) opened on Broadway to widespread raves (including a B+ from EW), while a fine cast headed by a lifeless Matthew Broderick struggled in director/playwright Kenneth Lonergan's disappointing new Off Broadway comic drama, »

This Week on Stage: 'Ragtime,' 'Equivocation' in L.A., and vibrators!

21 November 2009 6:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

It was a busy week on the boards. Sunday saw the opening of a Broadway revival of the musical Ragtime (pictured right), which EW's Melissa Rose Bernardo calls "dazzling" and gives an A. Also on Broadway, Sarah Ruhl's provocatively titled comic play In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play opened to a decidedly lukewarm review from yours truly: "Ruhl's play could have benefited from a broader, farcical touch." Elsewhere on Broadway, the Julia Stiles-Bill Pullman revival of David Mamet's Oleanna announced plans to close on Jan. 3. Off Broadway, we raved about both Alan Ayckbourn's My »

Fly With 'Condorman' In Today's Sick Day Stash

18 November 2009 1:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Call them "cult classics." "Guilty pleasures." "Comfort movies." We all have a mental rolodex of flicks that may not be terribly popular but, for one reason or another, they resonate in a very special way. Maybe you saw it at the right moment. Maybe you just see gold where everyone else sees feces. Whatever the case, these are the special favorites that you keep stashed away for sick days. Here are some of ours.

My favorite superhero film of all time is called "Condorman." You've probably never heard of it. It's not an Oscar-nominated picture. It's not particularly well-liked. It isn't based on a comic book. It isn't available on DVD, at least not in the United States. Until recently, I hadn't even seen it since elementary school. To most, it's the very definition of movie theater trash.

To me, it's cinematic gold.

"Condorman" centers on comic book creator Woody Wilkins, »

Q&A: Emmy Rossum Plans to Name Her Children Oscar, Tony, and Grammy

13 November 2009 8:09 AM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Photograph at left by Adam Kuehl. Do you remember what you were doing when you were seven years old? When I was that age, I was playing with Star Wars action figures and seeing how much Bubblicious I could cram into my mouth. But not Emmy Rossum. At the tender age of seven, she was making her professional operatic debut. She performed in Carmen at New York's Metropolitan Opera, and The Damnation of Faust at Carnegie Hall. She shared the stage with Luciano Pavarotti and Plácido Domingo, acting in dozens of productions in six different languages, all before she turned 18. Emmy Rossum is living proof that you probably wasted your adolescence. She's also done pretty well for herself as a young adult. Remember when child actors used to burn out on drugs and become tabloid fodder? Rossum decided to skip the Drew Barrymore fuck-all-of-you-i-want-more-pain-meds stage of her career and move directly into making movies. »

Rossum Opens Up About Secret Marriage - And Divorce

12 November 2009 5:31 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Emmy Rossum kept her failed marriage a closely-guarded secret - because she didn't want the union to be picked apart in the press.

The Phantom of the Opera star spent a year as Mrs. Justin Siegel - and even her biggest fans had no idea until the pair split this summer and began divorce proceedings.

Speaking candidly for the first time about her secret marriage, Rossum told Los Angeles radio DJ Valentine, "It's hard to have a private life and keep it private and hope that people don't pick you apart and that's kind of what's difficult about this job."

Siegel is now seeking to end the union, citing irreconcilable differences, and, according to court documents, the producer is asking his estranged wife to pay for the cost of the divorce - and spousal support.

But Rossum, who is now dating rocker Adam Duritz, insists she wants nothing in the divorce settlement: "I'm not asking for anything except freedom, so I can move on to another chapter in my life and find happiness." »

'Dollhouse,' Mike Tyson And A 'Twilight'-er At A-Rod's House Party In Today's Twitter-Wood

12 November 2009 3:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Cancelling "Dollhouse" disappointed a lot of Joss Whedon fans when Fox announced that it had pulled the plug, but Eliza Dushku felt the brunt of the decision as hard as anyone. She faced her Twitter followers with the news today and a sad smiley.

Mike Tyson, meanwhile, reportedly faced a paparazzo, landing at least one good punch, and Kirstie Alley has his back in Twitter-Wood. There were a few great pics today in the feed, too, including a shot from MoMA's new Tim Burton exhibit and Sarah Silverman's birthday tribute to her show's multi-talented producer, director and writer Rob Schrab, better known to any comic book readers out there as the creator of "Scud: The Disposable Assassin." Check those out after the jump and find out which "Twilight" actor visiting Alex Rodriguez's home. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for November 12, 2009.

This Week on Stage: 'The Understudy,' 'Idiot Savant,' and 'Nightingale'

7 November 2009 5:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

This week saw the too-rapid close of the Neil Simon revival Brighton Beach Memoirs on Broadway, as well as the opening of three Off Broadway productions: The Understudy, starring Justin Kirk, Julie White, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar (above); Idiot Savant with Willem Dafoe; and Nightingale with Lynn Redgrave. Melissa Bernardo gave a B+ to The Understudy but dinged it for the cast's somewhat mixed on-stage chemistry. Thom Geier calls Idiot Savant "one strange, head-scratching evening" and gives it a C+. As for Lynn Redgrave's one-woman show, Nightingale, I gave it a C and took issue with the production because "the »

'Twilight' Actors Without Clothes, The 'New Moon' Premiere And Dog Accounts In Today's Twitter-Wood

6 November 2009 4:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The Twitter-Wood feed started following its first canine today, as recent hacking victim and "Eclipse" actress Jodelle Ferland tweeted a pic referencing her dog "Genevieve Ferland." According to @gena_fur's Twitter account, Genevieve recently turned five, hates nail clippers and dressed as a princess last year for Halloween.

Lack of clothing was on the minds of two other "Twilight" series actors, though, as Tinsel Korey seems to have not yet found a dress for the "New Moon" premiere, and Charlie Bewley reported on his love of not wearing anything. Remarkably, I made none of this up. Check it out, along with an award Arnold Schwarzenegger recently presented to Kirk Douglas, a scandalous "Full House" photo and the reason "Iron Man 2" will show up to theaters late if it gets delayed. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for November 6, 2009.

This week saw the opening of two new Broadway productions, both revivals: The Neil Simon Plays: Brighton Beach Memoirs, a comedy-drama starring former Roseanne star Laurie Metcalf (left), which I described as "a fine revival, easily the best show of a young Broadway season," and the musical Finian's Rainbow, which Tanner Stransky called "an odd, farcical muscial" that is "well cast and smartly performed." 'Eclipse' Actress' Site Gets Hacked, U2 And More Halloween Costumes In Today's Twitter-Wood

26 October 2009 3:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

"Eclipse" actress Jodelle Ferland claims that hackers descended on her website, which would explain the disarray currently on display if you visit Jodelle-Ferland.net. Her "Twilight" series costar Ashley Greene seemed to be having a much better weekend, however, taking in the U2 concert at the Rose Bowl Sunday night. Greene was joined by Danny DeVito, Demi Moore, and a host of others who tweeted pictures from the night.

Elsewhere, Tom Felton and Emmy Rossum are still undecided on their Halloween costumes, but Felton has officially nixed a Dalmation outfit and Rossum may be warming up to Pippi Longstocking. Check out what they had to say after the jump along with Edward Norton doing yoga, Billy Burke's "Harry Potter" shout-out and Stephen Fry's new secret video game role. Twilight on Broadway

Imagine this: You sit anxiously squirming in your red plush seat having vivid flashbacks to years ago when you were first introduced to the love story that shaped your life. Your thoughts jump around from your first impressions of seeing Twilight (2008) in the theaters to your first Twilight convention where you waited in line for three hours to get Kellan Lutz's autograph. As memories fill your existence, the sound of the harp accompanied with the graceful upbeat sounds of the piano begin to play the opening score to Twilight on Broadway... Throughout time, Broadway and Hollywood have worked closely, sharing performers, scripts, and scores. Actors dream of starring on Broadway and this month alone you can walk down 42nd Street and find Daniel Craig, Jude Law, Sienna Miller, and Hugh Jackman pouring their souls out in nightly sold out performances.
