Trivia for
Hysterical Blindness (2002) (TV)

advertisement
  • The exterior of the bar is actually an apartment building in Paterson, New Jersey. Beer signs and background actors were placed in the windows (which themselves were altered to match the windows at the interior bar location) to create the appearance of a bar. The interiors were filmed at a closed-down bar/restaurant in Bayonne, New Jersey.

  • During filming at the Bar exterior, a freight train rumbled right through the set, shutting down filming for several minutes and igniting a reflective light screen, which had been blown onto a light by the wind from the passing train.

  • The scene in Rick (Justin Chambers)'s house - where Debby (Uma Thurman) offers to make breakfast had to be shot that way because the house actually had no kitchen. It had been gutted for renovation prior to being selected as a location for the film. The filmmakers contemplated building a fake kitchen, but the homeowner refused.

  • When the location of the shot of Beth ('Juliette Lewis')'s car pulling away from behind her house - followed by a crane up to the overpass in the background - was scouted, the foliage only a few feet tall. But when it came time to shoot the scene, the stalks had grown so high that they obstructed the view of the overpass, and had to be pruned down. When the filmmakers could not identify the legal property owner, they went ahead and pruned it without permission.

  • The plastic-covered couch seen in Beth (Juliette Lewis)'s house was actually the property of the homeowner. When director Mira Nair saw it on a scouting trip, she decided it should stay as part of the set dressing.
