The Girlfriend Experience is one of the more courageous and challenging films to come out this year, and the fact that it Soderbergh’s can give us all hope. An odd beast, Steven Soderbergh; an odd, Janus-faced movie beast. An Oscar-winning director (nominated twice in the same year—a feat only equalled once before, in 1938, by Michael Curtiz, who didn’t win) who pumps out the mall-pleasers like Ocean’s 11, 12, and 13 (though the mall was, apparently, less pleased with 12), Out of Sight, and—let’s face it—Erin Brockovich. He also has a doppelganger, his Imp of the Perverse, that turns out uncompromising, indie fare like Schizopolis, the brilliant Full Frontal, and the even more brilliant Bubble. But it isn’t a case of Robert Altman Syndrome (a director, God rest his soul, seemingly bent on immolating his career and repeatedly swallowing a grenade—like Prêt-à-Porter after The Player and »

The Girlfriend Experience (2009) covers several days in the life of a high-end escort in Manhattan. Media coverage surrounding this independent effort from director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Erin Brockovich) highlighted his choice of adult film star, Sasha Grey, to portray the main character, Chelsea. I had never heard of the aspiring actress (she's done over 100 "movies" to date) before the film's publicity efforts, but a quick Google search returned probably more info and pictures than most straight laced folks would desire. Those familiar with Sasha's oeuvre hoping to get artsy-fartsy Hollywood porn will be sadly disappointed, as there is barely any nudity and no explicit sex on display.
What makes Chelsea's services unique is that for $2000 per hour she provides what is alluded to in the title, time with a significant other. She gets wined and dined, for the most part, by high earning businessmen while making conversation about their daily »

Top Ten Working American Directors
A list like this is tricky to the point of madness. However, I'm going to save you the trouble by saying it right here, right now: Most of the choices on this list are obvious. There's a reason why certain names continually pop up whenever conversation drifts toward great American films. So there. I said it.
Yet, how do you weigh the likes of Francis Ford Coppola, a genius who delivered some of the all-time greatest films, but fizzled out 25 or so years ago, against a filmmaker like Woody Allen who has worked consistently for decades churning out both brilliant gems and disposable time wasters? How do you compare either of these directors against an auteur such as Spike Jonze who has only opened two films so far, but both are masterpieces?
In the end I just went with my gut. I knew there were »

The Informant!
Directed by: Steven Soderbergh
Cast: Matt Damon, Scott Bakula, Melanie Lynskey, Joel McHale
Running Time: 1 hr 48 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: September 18, 2009
Plot: Based on the book by Kurt Eichenwald and true events … Mark Whitacre (Damon) chooses to side with the FBI in an investigation into agri-business (mainly corn) price fixing at Adm. Unfortunately Mark has a problem with keeping his truth straight.
Who’s It For? It’s an adult comedy. The Hangover is also an adult comedy. These are two completely different things. The comedy is of the chuckle variety in The Informant! and there’s a lot of it. And if you’re willing to watch Damon in non-Bourne movies, then get in line.
Expectations: Damon is at the top of my list for “if I could only pick one guy’s movies for the rest of my life including the ones he has already made. »

Adam of Club Silencio here with another look at my favorite actresses and their distinguishing claims to fame.
"I think I want to end therapy. I don't know, I feel like it's time, y'know. I feel like I want to go at it alone for awhile. I mean here I am completely single and I'm not So depressed about it. (Pause.) It's hard with Laura being so grotesquely in love... but I'm still okay. (Pause.) And its been forever since I've been obsessed with someone, so I think I'm doing a lot better in that area..."-Amelia, Walking and Talking (1996)
If misery loves company, it has exchanged vows with Catherine Keener. She's made a career of trudging through the wreckage of characters' neuroses and judgment -- still somehow offsetting their scalding words with a cool, collective charm. A sharp acidic wit underlies even her most sentimental supporting parts. If strong, »

I admit it. No need to twist my arm behind my back and make me cry “Uncle! Uncle! Oh Uncle, why would you twist my arm like this? What have I ever done but love you!!!”...Ahem. I admit to you I am a nerd. A dweeb. A dorkus-milorkus. I have from time to time sat at a table with nothing more than a pile of books, dice, pencils, and Mountain Dew, all to play an evenings worth of Dungeons and Dragons. I have from time to time, fired up a video game system to bring death and destruction with linked Ions Cannons. I even admit that I know that Ion Cannons are primarily used to destroy shields in the X-Wing vs. Tie-Fighter series... so saying I would use them to bring death was a false statement. Nerdy enough? Thought so. My collective of FOMAFers... I return once again to tickle your faces, »

In the early 1970’s, on the ivy-covered campus of Princeton University, one first spied sophomores running naked through the school’s hallowed halls and prancing upon its manicured quads. Though its conception is shrouded in mystery, the Nude Olympics was a cult staple of the University for nearly three decades, beloved by students and predictably hated on by faculty and alumni. In 1999, after threats of year-long suspensions graduated from the category of “idle” to “very real,” the bacchanalian games came to an abrupt end. In its heyday, Princeton’s streak fest wrangled hundreds of student bodies, enticed them to shuffle off their clothed coils despite frigid temperatures, and created the greatest spectacle of naked flesh outside of a Spencer Tunick photograph. Still, the Naked Olympics ain’t got nothin’ on the Hamilton College Varsity Streaking Team. Unlike Princeton, the beginnings of Hamilton’s tradition are far easier to decipher. Established »

There's a movement afoot that's been bringing a lot of adult film stars into mainstream movies, and Steven Soderbergh is the latest director to jump on this trend by casting Sasha Grey in the lead role of his latest film The Girlfriend Experience. In this case, it seems like a perfect fit since the film is about a high-end Manhattan call girl and the various relationships she must navigate in her life. Soderbergh, whose best known movies include Erin Brockovich, Traffic and the Ocean's Trilogy, did this film as another one of his experimental in-between indie projects like Bubble and Full Frontal. The movie stars basically all non-actors and unknowns, and is shot very much in a documentary style. It seems like an interesting premise, although something tells me the main draw will be Sasha Grey. The first trailer has debuted online over at Hulu [1], which unfortunately prevents anyone outside the U. »

So do you dig on the stranger, smaller, less studio driven Steven Soderbergh efforts like Schizopolis, Full Frontal or Bubble? Have a look at the stylish trailer for The Girlfriend Experience a small character study which brings porn star Sasha Grey into the more ‘legit’ film world. Someone has to take up the mantle after the early passing of Ms. Marilyn ‘Rabid’ Chambers (Rip).
Five days in the life of an ultra high-end Manhattan call girl who thinks she has her life totally under control. She feels her future is secure because she runs her own business her own way, makes $2000 an hour, and has a devoted boyfriend who accepts her lifestyle. But when you’re in the business of meeting people, you never know who you’re going to meet
One thing that the films (and marketing media) of Soderbergh’s entire filmography have going for them is fabulous music choices. »

This is gonna sound weird coming from me, the inveterate hater of grossout comedies, but there’s not enough grossout in I Love You, Man. Oh, with one instance of projectile vomiting and a running joke about dog shit, it’s more than my recommended daily allowance of kindergarten humor. But the dude looking for a good grossout will be disappointed. On the other hand, that male contingent of the moviegoing crowd that has been waiting for the film that tries to push and prod guys to conform to a narrow, cardboard stereotype of modern masculinity in the same way that Hollywood has been trying to mold women into materialistic Barbie dolls in recent years will delight in I Love You, Man, which posits that sweet, kind, considerate, friendly, smart, handsome, successful Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd: Role Models, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) just ain’t man enough. Who watches the Watchmen? Plenty of people, at least according to preliminary weekend box office estimates that indicate that the new movie about a group of flawed superheroes grossed a solid, if underwhelming $55.7 million over the weekend.
But it’s a good bet that many of those viewers had their eyes on one Watchman in particular: Dr. Manhattan, an otherworldly blue being who spends much of the movie completely naked, and whose genitals are often clearly visible.
The character’s nudity, and his ample endowment, are already the subject of plenty of online chatter and TV jokes.
“Someone asked me how much of Dr. Manhattan is you,” said Billy Crudup, the actor who was the basis for the primarily computer-generated character, on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Crudup then held up his thumb and forefinger several inches apart, and added, “About that much.”

Madonna's black-and-white nude picture has been sold for ,500 at an auction on Thursday. The photo, taken when she was just a struggling 20-year-old, was bought by an anonymous phone bidder.
Photographer Lee Friedlander took the full frontal picture in 1979, when the "Material Girl" was still trying to make ends meet. She was reportedly paid just for the nude shot.
Auctioneer Christie's Art House estimated the shot to cost between ,000 and ,000.
According to Friedland, Madonna "seemed very confident, a street-wise girl. She told me she was putting a band together but half the kids that age are doing that. She was a good professional model."

"Full Frontal" starring Julia Roberts and David Hyde Pierce is disappointing to say the least. This 2002 film that has an all star cast, is an all star failure in terms of delivering a good, well paced drama. The store takes place in L.A. where several couples get together at party to find out "how dull their relationships really are" (That's what I got out of it anyhow). We see each couple and their struggles that their going through before they all get together at this high shin dig party that really isn't. Pierce and Roberts a very good in this flick, but the story line and script i... »

Madonna's nude photos are coming out at an auction. Christie's auction house in New York is expecting to sell the pop superstar's 1979 full frontal pictures for ,000 at least.
The 50-year-old music icon, then only 20 years old, was a financially strapped dancer struggling to make ends meet when she responded to photographer Lee Friedlander's ad in a newspaper seeking a nude model. She was paid a measly .
Six photos taken at the shooting session were later sold to Playboy and were published in 1985.
Christie's said that the picture was "probably the most explicit" shot Friedlander took of Madonna. It estimated the value of the photo at ,000 to ,000.

A full frontal black-and-white picture of pop diva Madonna, taken in 1979 by Lee Friedlander, will be put on sale at Christie's auction house in New York next month. The snap is expected to sell for at least $10,000.
According to Matthieu Humery, head of Christie's photography department, Madonna was "a 20-year-old dancer trying to make ends meet" when she responded to Friedlander's newspaper ad seeking a nude model. She was paid for $25 for six photos from the modeling session, which were later on sold to Playboy magazine, the editors of which made them public in 1985.
And while the other five pictures from the Playboy spread were sold together for $7,170 back in 2007, the one last pic, considered as "the most explicit one", will go on sale on February 12. In accompaniment of the pic, another later Madonna's pic shot by Helmut Newton will also go on the auction block.

There's a brand new, Japanese trailer for Watchmen floating around the web tonight and it's a must watch for anyone who's a fan of the comic. Aside from Japanese narration being eerily appropriate to the tone of this thing, it's a must see for tons of new, never before footage. Included are extended shots explaining the alternate history of the world in which Watchmen is set, and tons and tons of Nixon. See Tricky Dick tear down the doomsday clock in the Japanese trailer for Watchmen below: »
