Not as funny as I expected, 27 December 2003
Author: squala
Disappointingly, this film was a step down for both Jackie Chan and Jennifer-Love, whom I actually idolize. Chan was trying to be funny while being 'manipulated' by the tux, but turned out to be corny (at least for me). I'm not sure if he's already too old for the job, but if he goes on with his upcoming movies like that, his name will just fade away from the movie industry, and the likes of Jet Li will very much make a better replacement for him.
The movie also proved that Love-Hewitt wasn't a comedienne after all. She's no match to Reese Witherspoon when it comes to actress versatility (the latter can do both funny and sad movies). She should just stick to drama or other pretty-girl films.

Cut the wires!, 18 November 2003
Author: guyb from Portland, Oregon
What a shame to see Jackie Chan's talents wasted with a bunch of kung fu wires to leap in the air with. The whole joy of watching his movies is the sheer talent and relentless energy he demonstrates while doing all of his own stunts. Leave the wires to those who really need them.

Robot Pants, 14 November 2003
Author: tedg (tedg@FilmsFolded.com) from Virginia Beach
*** This review may contain spoilers ***
Spoilers herein.
Actors are among the most cursed beings in the world. To the extent that they succeed as stars, they build constraints. That's because movies are always about other movies and recognizable actors are always about themselves as we know them.
And that's doubly true for actors who rely on a gimmick, in this case choreographed acrobatics. After a few dozen films, it must feel just like putting on a remotely controlled suit and doing the minstrel machine bit.
I think it is possible to incorporate this in a film in a clever self-referential way. `The Wrong Trousers` is the very best of this, and pokes fun at the automatic nature of the Hitchcock formula.
This about as far from that gentle sophistication as one can get. It is crude and stupid.
But yet, this Ms Hewitt is pretty good at mugging over the camp. I don't know her TeeVee work, but it surely doesn't allow for actorly annotation like she does here. She seems to be copying SM Geller, particularly the goofy acting-with-thighs type of poise she showed in `Scooby Doo.' That was pretty intelligent, though. This is not.

Put into 'Discard' mode, 26 March 2003
Author: Lester Mak (leekandham) from London, UK
Despite the numerous failures Jackie Chan had in trying to break into Hollywood, and now that he has, it still seems that he never quite learnt the moral of is conquest. Simply put, this was equal, nay I correct myself, can be classed below some of his other failures in terms of quality. But fortunately he has become a big enough star for the film to be pulled off - but only just
I won't try to sum up the plot, partly because it's be done by others already, and partly because it is so disjointed and skewed that it struggles to make any sense. Frankly, the intelligence level of the characters appeared to be equivalent to that of a carrot, and indeed the writers seemed to share that intelligence. Even Saturday morning kids cartoons (including Jackie's own) have much greater knowledge than this!
After the success of the Rush Hour films, and Shanghai Noon/Knights, this film was a sheer disappointment. I love seeing Jackie Chan as part of a double act in his English language films, but The Tuxedo shows he can't quite pull it off alone. Jennifer Love Hewitt appeared as simple window dressing for Chan, and despite the miniscule amount of chemistry that did appear (better than none), Chan looked desperate in trying to pull of his one-liners.
It is hard to understand how the script left the storyboard as it did. The plot isn't the worst in the world, but the way the film was constructed left very little artistic and entertainment value. It was almost too rushed. And written without Jackie Chan in mind, I feel. It's too formulaic, too 'let's make a quick buck'.
I am a devoted Jackie Chan fan and one of my life's joys was the fortune to meet him and to organise his appearance at Oxford University in 2000. It's hard for a fan to criticise his hero, but sometimes he must, especially when, as in this case, his loyal fans pay money only to be disappointed.
The Tuxedo has to be one of Jackie's lowlights. I very much hope that the man can continue to work on good scripts such as Rush Hour and leave behind the non-comical, formulaic scripts such as the Tuxedo that seem to have been written while on the toilet seat.
Sorry Jackie, but one I have to advise to avoid.

Undoubtedly the worst, 23 May 2005
Author: rfreddy from India
What to say about this 2 hour ultimate boring stuff. Jackie should never have done it. I mean, he don't need to do films like this. He is already a big name in Hollywood and a film like this would do only harm to that hard earned reputation. Basically the film lacked sense. but a nonsense film can be a good entertainer, like bloodsport or many vandamme movies, But this one lacks in the entertainment part too. i wonder how much time Jackie was left 'wireless' in the movie. because all the time, he is either jumping or flying or running. Jackie, as a wonderful director himself, should have known that the film is nothing but @#$%. I wont recommend anybody to watch the movie. but i would like to advise the Hollywood filmmakers to watch some original Chinese stuff like police story or armor of god before getting into making a Jackie Chan movie.

disapointing, 14 January 2003
Author: Steve Robson (commodusone) from Cambridge England
although both jackie and jennifer do well with this lazy, confused script ultimately this film falls flat. a jackie chan film first and foremost is a vehicle enabling us to see jackies martial arts talents and physical comedy. The premise was childish and at times i found myself cringing with embarrassment which is unheard of im a huge jackie fan and have been since battle creek brawl. Lets face it it doesnt take much to please us rush hour 1 and 2 shanghai noon mr nice guy etc have been fantastic. just put jackie in lots of imaginitive fight scenes with a comedy sidekick or indeed police story just imaginitive fight scenes. But with the tuxedo a lot of the fight scenes have been matrixed up and are cgi'd which we dont expect from jackie. the actual plot was like something from the english school film foundation. Lets hope shanghai knights and highbinders are better.

What was Jackie thinking?, 15 March 2003
Author: SuzyMuang from Michigan
I'm sorry, but this was the worst of Jackie's movies here in the US. I am also not buying the whole Jennifer Love Hewitt character either. I think this one was highly overrated, not underrated as previously stated. He's so much better in the "Shanghai" series as opposed to this cinematic mess. Please, Jackie, stick to acting the way you know best!

Naff latest Jackie Chan film, 13 January 2003
Author: davideo-2 from United Kingdom
STAR RATING:*****Unmissable****Very Good***Okay**You Could Go Out For A Meal Instead*Avoid At All Costs
Okay,so from the off-point,we realize this is nothing more than simple escapist fare.A story about a tuxedo that gives it's wearer the power to perform extraordinary,super-human feats and stunts was very unlikely to ever be perceived as potentially thought-provoking or socially insightful. So,it's a sign of just how poor a film The Tuxedo is that it just isn't any fun at all.Chan's previous ability to perform all his own stunts, even at the very real risk of life-and-limb,is blatently covered by CGI in this film and for the first time ever, looks totally fake, which completely ruins the effect. Not only that, but his character just isn't any fun at all.Jennifer Love Hewitt is woefully miscast as his sidekick, whilst Jason Isaacs and Peter Stormare, two respectable actors, appear in embarrassing co-starring roles.First time director Kevin Donovan helms the whole joyless affair pacelessly, and when even the out-takes at the end aren't any fun,you know you're in trouble.*

Not even Peter Stormare can save this movie, 14 June 2004
Author: udeaasykle (udeaasykle@hotmail.com) from Sandnes, Norway
You know its not a good movie when not even Peter Stormare can save it. It is very very very easy to see that they used wires, even on the parts where you are lead to believe that Jackie is doing it without wires. And when Jackie has to use a stunt double you know something is wrong. The slapstick humor is so and so and the action is... well not good. If i were to say something about Jackie Chan, i would say. Watch his old movies before he came to Hollywood because they are sooooooo much better. The story is of course ludicrous and is about a crazy rich man who wants to pollute the water supply for the entire us, except of course his water supply. Silly silly silly if you ask me, but then again, these movie build on action and not story. All in all if you are a Jackie Chan fan i would see it if you don't have anything else to do, but don't expect much, or anything for that matter. I rate this movie 4/10

Why ?, 3 October 2003
Author: Sky_Captain_Joe_Sullivan
Jackie Chan plays Jimmy Tong a Taxi driver who gets the job of driving super duper suave spy Clark Devlin around.Devlin wears the most expensive tuxedo ever and before you can say "blueberry pie", Chan is wearing it.
Chan is really charming, but the rest of the movie features some water Baron and his plan to poisin the world's water supply which is pretty funny for the wrong reasons.Love Hewitt is great eye-candy.
