What were the chances?
The Ring at first seemed like one of the least promising projects of the Halloween film season: A U.S. remake of a Japanese cult classic that hasn’t been given a chance to prove itself Stateside, directed by a filmmaker whose résumé is made up of comedies. Yet The Ring stacks up as the most satisfying studio horror film of the fall season. Unlike, for handy example, Brett Ratner’s Red Dragon, Gore Verbinski’s movie honors its predecessor and recaptures what made it so effective while also giving the material its own stylistic identity, and adding new material that doesn’t compromise the whole or feel gratuitous.

The Hannibal Lecter Anthology Blu-ray Review

Debuting twenty-three years ago with “Manhunter”, there have been five films chronicling the enigmatic and terrifying serial killer Hannibal Lecter. Though many of us have seen the first three (which are included in this collection), they were previously unreleased on Blu-Ray format until this past month. If you haven’t seen these films, you owe it yourself to see them at whatever cost, but the Blu-Ray versions don’t necessarily add anything spectacular to the series. Though worth watching, this collection of films doesn’t differ much from the previously released versions, and I am still waiting for some sort of “Ultimate Collection.” Keep reading after the jump to see why.

With the popularity of last week's "Who Should Play Captain America" poll and Secret Identity's Captain America casting call, it's only fair that Steve Rogers' greatest nemesis gets his turn in the Splash Page spotlight.
The Red Skull is one of Marvel's most loathsome villains, meaning that an actor capable of such a sinister performance is required for "The First Avenger: Captain America." We've already seen a classic Marvel rogue mishandled on screen in the form of Doctor Doom—going a similar route with the Skull would completely neuter the "Captain America" movie.

It's been a few years since a biopic about Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner was announced with Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Red Dragon) attached to direct. Last year there was even a rumor that Robert Downey Jr. was in very serious negotiations to take on the role of the father of the Playboy bunny. However, other than quick fleeting mentions of speculation it doesn't seem like there's been any real progress made towards going into production. However, Cinematical made a keen observation on Twitter when Hefner updated: "Meeting with Diablo Cody to talk about the Brian Grazer Playboy film today." Oh really, Hef? But the guys at Cinematical also noticed that the usually vocal Cody didn't seem to call attention to the meeting on her Twitter page. So is she re-writing a current draft? “It rubs the lotion on its skin.” “Now it places the lotion in the basket.” Anyway, enough of my usual at home internet surfing activities. I’ve got a review to write damn it, and write one I shall.
Freshly hitting store shelves and web retailers nationwide is MGM’s latest Hannibal Lecter Collection, now on Blu-ray, just in time for the Halloween and holiday season. Like the previous DVD collection of the same heading, this new collection features Manhunter (the first Thomas Harris adaptation featuring the now notorious Hannibal Lecter, then portrayed rather effectively by Brian Cox), Silence Of The Lambs (ushering the ever talented Sir Anthony Hopkins into the maniacal role of Lecter), and Hannibal now with picture and sound so stunningly clear you can almost smell Clarice Starling’s Evian skin cream and L'Air du Temps perfume.

Earlier this year, Scholastic’s Graphix imprint completed releasing the nine volumes comprising Jeff Smith’s delightful Bone. The full-color books are ideal entry points into graphic novels or even fantasy literature. Now, the prequel, Rose, is finally joining the library in a softcover color edition.
Rose is, of course, Gran'ma Ben, the strong, cow-racing elder figure introduced early in Smith’s saga. Her sister, Briar, is The Hooded One, an evil crone, but as we’re about to learn, they were once young and far more carefree.
Illustrated by Charles Vess, the story is very, very different from Bone, much more a cautionary tale and almost devoid of the humor that kept Bone such a great read. Not long before Michael Bay poured acid down fanboy throats with his double whammy of escapist fertilizer, one name could be heard used with an equal amount of fervor: Brett Ratner. “The rat,” as he was affectionately dubbed by a cavalcade of enraged fanboys, had done a major disservice to the community in the form of X-Men: The Last Stand. Rumor of rushed rewrites and a hectic shooting schedule plagued the film and though Ratner’s entry opened with the biggest box-office take of the trilogy, The Last Stand was critically derided and universally cast out by most fanboys.
My own relationship with Ratner’s work skews on the side of shrewd criticism. I enjoyed Rush Hour 1 and 2, thought Red Dragon was effective if not particularly stellar and was one of the few people I know (aside from my Dad) who enjoyed Ratner’s oft-quoted critical and box office failure The Family Man. »

Fanboys seemed to hate this film across the board, so I can't help but wonder how many of them will buy it on the down low and hide it under their bed when their friends come over. I, for one, actually didn't think it was all that bad. It was, at the very least, entertaining. This isn't to say I think you should buy it, but it works as a one-time watch. The Telegraph has posted a nice little list of what they consider to be the 25 best book to film adaptations and while most of the titles will likely not surprise you, perhaps the order in which they are placed will. Considering this is the Internet, the most discussed placement is sure to be The Lord of the Rings trilogy in the 25th spot while the Harry Potter filmed franchise comes in three spots earlier at 22. Unfortunately, I haven't read many of the books from this list, but I have seen all but a few of the films. I will say I am far more partial to Stephen King's "The Shining" than I was to Kubrick's adaptation and I hardly remember the Harry Potter books well enough to even say if I think they are great adaptations as much as I have simply enjoyed both the films and the books. »

It can be hard to find something to wear when chowing down on some fava beans and enjoying a nice Chianti, but we think we’ve found just the thing up for auction on eBay – the prison top as worn by Sir Anthony Hopkins as iconic movie monster Hannibal Lecter. The liver-lovin’ cannibal doesn’t get much of a chance to shine in the style stakes in his various film outings, the greatest fashion flourish coming during his spell of Florentine freedom in Hannibal, and so often incarcerated (thankfully) he’s forced into prison uniforms and it’s an item from one such combo that we’ve sourced this week’s fantastic eBay find.

Director Kevin Tancharoen, who helmed last year's remake of 80s musical hit Fame as his first feature film project, is leaving behind lycra and legwarmers to venture into sci-fi territory.
Will we now see performing arts students dancing in the streets on top of spaceships? Probably not...
He is to make a sci-fi flick called Arcana, which is set up at Rat Entertainment and will be produced by Brett Ratner (director of Red Dragon, X-Men: The Last Stand and the Rush Hour series) and Jay Stern (a producer on Rush Hour 3). Universal will distribute.
Tancharoen (pictured right) told Moviehole: "Arcana is a unique blend of the graphic-novel backdrop - like Blade Runner - and shot like 300, and has a little bit of Warriors mixed in there, with a little bit of martial arts, so it's got a lot of crazy elements in there. Ever heard of Chris Casamassa? Probably not, but you may have seen him. He’s the martial arts master who played the role of Scorpion in the first Mortal Kombat movie and in a few episodes of Mortal Kombat: Conquest, the TV series.
Fortunately, he wasn’t part of the terrible sequel, titled Annihilation. Come to think of it, the vast majority of the cast didn’t make it back for the sequel…
Well, Casamassa will be back as Scorpion again… in another Mortal Kombat movie. Who knew?

I honestly don’t know which is worse, that the director of such “classics” as Rush Hour and Red Dragon was going to be doing the new Conan movie reboot or that he’s moved on and the director of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot and Pathfinder is now, according to Chud, taking over. This change doesn’t necessary help my attitude towards the project.
Of course, it also doesn’t help that the company making the film, and has now picked Nispel to helm it, is none other than Millennium Films — the folks responsible for such cinematic gems as Alien Hunter, The Wicker Man, 88 Minutes and countless more. They don’t exactly have a fantastic track record when it comes to producing quality entertainment. However, I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt here.

Well, there was no way news this big was going to be concealed forever, and people this is Huge! This could bring the very existence of Hollywood into question. What is this news I speak of? It’s news that turns S1M0ne into an uncanny look at the future of cinema.
We all know that Hollywood has been slowly replacing actors with digital stuntman for years now. Earliest example I can recall is Wesley Snipes as Blade in Blade 2 during one of the opening fight scenes. After that, Legolas, Orlando Bloom, had several full CGI replacements during the trilogy Lord of the Rings. Jar Jar Binks, of Star Wars: Episode One infamy, would probably been an example of how Not to do a full CGI replacement.
And CGI is not being used to just replace stuntmen, Hollywood has been slowly “enhancing” and touching up some of our favorite actors and actresses. »

It Appears that the lambs have not been silenced - and neither have the rumours.
There are unsubstantiated reports flying across the internet that Anthony Hopkins is to reprise his role as cannibalistic Dr Hannibal Lecter.
Hopkins, 71, appeared in 1991's The Silence of the Lambs, its sequel Hannibal and the prequel Red Dragon (a 2002 remake of the 1986 Manhunter).
It's now being claimed Hopkins has agreed to a fourth film, with director Ridley Scott also on board.
A Universal spokesman is being quoted as saying: "As far as we know, [this project] is alive. Anthony Hopkins and Ridley Scott are both very committed. We like what we've got, and the revised script is really, really good."
There was speculation that a further instalment in the franchise might be scrapped after Jodie Foster - who starred alongside Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs - bowed out to direct the 2010 release Flora Plum. Cate Blanchett »

On Friday, Angels & Demons debuted to an estimated $16.6 million on approximately 7,000 screens at 3,527 sites. As the sequel to The Da Vinci Code and the sole new nationwide release, it easily charted first for the day, selling about as many tickets as the first days of National Treasure: Book of Secrets and Red Dragon. However, it paled next to Da Vinci's $28.6 million opening day back in May 2006, and that National Treasure sequel played at Christmastime when initial grosses point to higher overall totals than they do in May. It's being reported that Anthony Hopkins is teaming up with director Ridley Scott to bring his most infamous villain Hannibal Lecter back to the big screen.
