OK. This movie has had its fair share of bashing so I just wanted to even things out a bit. This movie really isn't all that bad. In fact, I quite liked it.
It's a French romantic comedy, so don't look for any sort of great depth or intellectual mindblowing epiphanies about the world. It's a happy, fun and stylish movie featuring Audrey Tautou. I'm sort of a closet Tautou fanatic; I've seen all her movies and this one is actually one of my favorites. No, it's nothing like Amelie nor does it aspire to be - but it does feature Audrey doing what she does best: being a whimsical, cute and slightly aloof twenty something girl who is lovelorn and lost in the busy Paris life that she is enveloped in.
Virtually stealing the spotlight from Tautou, Edouard Baer's "Francois" character is great. He is passionate, volatile, and paranoid of Michele's reasons for doing anything she does. Both leads exemplify the roller-coaster of confusion that comes along with being young and trying to discover yourself, and to watch it all play out through the charismatic performances of these two great actors is exactly what people who enjoy lighthearted French romantic comedies pay to see. For what it is, it's just right.
