Good romantic comedy, 12 August 2005
8/10

I brought this film whilst browsing through the world cinema section in my local store. Asian romantic comedies are barely ever distributed in the west, thus was looking forward to watching this cantonese curio.

The film pretty much a typical film about boy meets girl, boy being Tony Leung (of Chungking express, in the mood for love, 2046) and gil being pop diva Sammi Chung. Boy and girl fall in love in strange circumstances, but has to decide to stay with current girlfriend or go out with girl. The start of the film sets the mood for the comedy that ensues through out. Nevertheless, I felt that this film wasn't laugh out loud funny, but was more of a light octane romantic film. The chemistry between the two leads is great, they've certainly get the film going and kept me watching to the very end. Notably they both give both performances too. The script is good, but not great. The dialogue is fair and keeps the film going at a good pace. However, the dialogue itself isn't particularly memorably funny or witty, which is what a film of this calbre needs. Furthermore Chinese cinema has a tendency to overuse slow 80's love pop music through certain scenes, this made some scenes towards the end slow to view.

Overall is a good film worthy of watching. It's a satisfying light hearted film with good performances from both leads. However be aware of some cinematic clichés that follow.
