Charles and Ray Eames seem to have their place in history for their furniture. Most of us have had our rumps in an Eames chair at one stage and the documentary about their lives barely touches on their films. However on their own, these are a remarkable achievement - not the least for following the rise Elmer Bernstein from obscure musician to Hollywood legend.
ATLAS is a superior short film which doesn't make the mistake, evident in some of the Eames films, of jamming in too much information. The expanding and contracting map lines on white outline the Parthian, Roman, Greek etc. empires, once with voice and once with music, against a digital year clock inset. You can see their "Topography" film and "Powers of Ten" providing inspiration.
