This documentary is a fascinating portrait of the artist, Maya Deren. I wanted some sort of introduction to her work since much of it remains largely unavailable. The filmmakers granted my wish with this film. It is a comprehensive biography of the avant-garde filmmaker with interviews featuring Stan Brakhage, Katherine Dunham, and her ex-husband. I was impressed with the amazing footage of her work which seemed to be excavated from an archive somewhere. Deren's life was itself a work of art. She received a privileged upbringing with highly educated parents, boarding school, universities, and a great circle of friends in New York's Greenwich Village. Her influences in these surroundings molded the shape of her work and gave her the passion to pursue her goals even further. Upon viewing this film, I realized how far ahead of her time Deren was. Her motions and her raiment was a precursor to the beat and hippie generation, yet she surpassed even these eras with her work. All in all, the documentary is a biography and anyone with any interest in experimental film or Deren shouldn't miss the opportunity to see it.
