Clive Owen: The Hollywood Interview

Clive Owen Gets Back

By

Alex Simon

Clive Owen is one of those actors that keep surprising you. Just when you think the audience, and the Hollywood establishment, has pegged him as an action hero, a leading man, or a romantic comedy pin-up, Owen pulls an about-face and does something unexpected.

It all started October 3, 1964 in Coventry, England. Owen’s father, a country music singer, abandoned the family when he was just three. His mother later remarried, with Clive and his four brothers raised by his mother and stepfather, who worked for British Rail. Owen has characterized those early years as "rough." A self-described “solidly working class” kid, Owen was bitten by the acting bug at age 13 and followed his dream to The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art several years later. Initially cutting his teeth on high-profile British television programs such as “Chancer” and “Sharman,” as well as art house »

“Creation” Movie Poster and Trailer

Check out the poster for “Creation,” a biopic movie telling the life of Charles Darwin.

A psychological, heart-wrenching love story starring Paul Bettany (A Beautiful Mind, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World) as Charles Darwin, the film is based on “Annie’s Box,” a biography penned by Darwin’s great-great-grandson Randal Keynes using personal letters and diaries of the Darwin family. We take a unique and inside look at Darwin, his family and his love for his deeply religious wife, played by Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind, Requiem for a Dream), as, torn between faith and science, Darwin struggles to finish his legendary book “On the Origin of Species,” which goes on to become the foundation for evolutionary biology.

The film is directed by Jon Amiel (The Singing Detective, Entrapment) and writed  by John Collee (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World).

Checkmate: An Advance Review of PBS' "Endgame" on "Masterpiece Contemporary"

23 October 2009 8:37 AM, PDT | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

Apartheid is an ugly word, conjuring up images of racial segregation and hatred from a time in the not-too-distant past of South Africa. PBS' new political thriller Endgame, which airs Sunday evening as part of the public broadcaster's Masterpiece Contemporary wheel, dramatizes not the plight of the common South African man and woman under the draconian decree of apartheid but rather the machinery operating behind the scenes to bring an end to apartheid once and for all. Written by Paula Milne (Second Sight) and directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point), Endgame revolves around a series of secret talks between the Anc and the South African government brokered by Consolidated Goldfields, a multi-national company with vested financial interests in South Africa. The talks took place at an estate in England, far away from the violent rebellion in South Africa, and despite the risk in bringing together these enemies, the open lines »

Peeking Behind the Doors of Seismic Change: Televisionary Talks to "Endgame" Star Chiwetel Ejiofor

20 October 2009 11:50 AM, PDT | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

Golden Globe nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor is perhaps best known for his work in such diverse films as American Gangster, Dirty Pretty Things, Serenity, Love Actually, Redbelt, and Kinky Boots. The British actor has made a career of playing deeply complex individuals, from cross-dresser Lola in Kinky Boots to Dirty Pretty Things' cab driver and former doctor Okwe. In PBS' gripping apartheid thriller Endgame, which airs Stateside this Sunday as part of the new season of Masterpiece Contemporary, Ejiofor, recently appointed an OBE by Queen Elizabeth, plays South African political figure Thabo Mbeki, a key player in secret negotiations between the African National Congress and the South African government that were brokered by Consolidated Goldfields. Remarkably these talks resulted in an end to apartheid in South Africa and Endgame, written by Paula Milne and directed by Pete Travis, dramatize the secret talks, which occurred at Mells Park, an estate in England. »

New Director Being Eyed For ‘The Tourist’

19 October 2009 11:46 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Last week we reported on the possibility of Angelina Jolie replacing Charlize Theron in the upcoming thriller, The Tourist. Along with that news, we also learned that the previously attached director, Bharat Nalluri, had stepped away from the project, leaving the producers actively seeking a new director. And today we get the news that a new director has been found in the form of German helmer Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others).

Variety reports that although Donnersmarck has yet to officially enter into negotiations for The Tourist with Spyglass Entertainment, the talks are expected to happen very soon. Jolie was contacted by the studio a couple of weeks ago about starring in the project in place of Theron, but her involvement was said to be contingent on finding the right director. After meeting with a number of different directors, von Donnersmarck seems to have emerged as the right man for the job, »

Interview: Lone Scherfig (An Education)

16 October 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- Following in the footsteps of fellow Danish filmmakers (the Biers, the Bornedals and the von Triers) who move between English-language film fair and projects in their native tongue, Lone Scherfig has parlayed her experiences in smaller fair meant for a more “localized” audience into a a smashing coming-of-age film set in 1960's London where a teen girl embraces adulthood via the charm of a man twice her age. Since debuting An Education to plenty of praise at Sundance, the best known for Italian for Beginners filmmaker receives a report card that is graded by critics with A and high B's. Lead by Carey Mulligan in one of those star making performances that is being cross referenced with big names from silver screen's vault, and complimented by the excellent Peter Sarsgaard who finally gets his due with a perfectly fitted leading man type of role, An Education certainly has some »

Angelina Jolie To Replace Charlize Theron In ‘The Tourist?’

12 October 2009 10:49 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

A couple of months ago we got wind of the news that Terminator Salvation and Avatar star, Sam Worthington, was going to be replacing Tom Cruise in the spy thriller, The Tourist. That’s the male lead sorted out, but what about the female lead? Well, up until this point it was Charlize Theron who was set to play the role, but today we learn - by way of THR’s Risky Biz Blog - that she’s officially stepped away from the project, and word is that Brad Pitt’s even prettier half, a.k.a. Angelina Jolie, is in talks to step in and take her place.

A remake of the 2005 French-language thriller, “Anthony Zimmer“, The Tourist centers on “an American tourist who, on behalf of Interpol, goes undercover to entrap a former lover who’s a suspected global criminal.” If Jolie actually signs on for the role, »

Worth Watching: The Young Victoria Trailer

9 October 2009 3:58 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

A new, slick trailer has emerged for The Young Victoria, a new period drama starring Emily Blunt. Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada) stars in what looks to be an elegant, angst-ridden Victorian-era drama as the young British queen (that would be Queen Victoria). Rupert Friend plays Prince Albert. With Martin Scorsese and the Duchess of York lending producing cred, The Young Victoria looks to be a well-made heart-tugger. With a screenplay written by Oscar-winner Julian Fellowes (scribe of Gosford Park), and costumes that were insured for 10,000Gbp apiece, we're no doubt in for a royally interesting ride. The film, filmed mostly in 2007, was released to solid reviews in March of 2009 in the UK, but will be given a limited Us release on December 18th. It is currently available on DVD in Great Britain. Maggie Dearest

8 October 2009 6:25 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

I don't wish to be morbid but the grim reaper really needs a year off. He was working over time this year, at least with the celebrity set. So when I read this interview with Dame Maggie Smith, in which she brings up the dread topic several times in relation to her ongoing battle with cancer, it was upsetting. Smith must see some kind of future for herself? “I don’t think there’s a lot of it, because of my age — there just isn’t. It’s all been. I’ve no idea what there will be.”Maybe it's due to that through line of delicious self-assured imperiousness that runs through her work, but I never think of Maggie Smith as being young, or old or anywhere inbetween. Like Miss Jean Brodie, she's just always in her prime. Maggie is still filming the last "Part" of Harry Potter and »

The softer side of Clive Owen: Can you dig it?

26 September 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Ever since I saw Croupier while visiting London with my folks years ago, Clive Owen has been one of my very favorite actors. No one does that British brooding thing quite like he does (see: Gosford Park, CloserInside Man), and when he's bad-ass (i.e. King Arthur, Children of Men, Shoot 'Em Up), he's thrilling. But in his latest movie The Boys Are Back (directed by Shine's Scott Hicks), Owen sheds that stoic persona to play Joe Warr, a father of two sons who, following the death of his second wife, is faced with raising both of them on his own. »

Toronto 2009: The Feminine Mystique

22 September 2009 8:42 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

It seemed appropriate that "The Young Victoria" closed out Toronto this year, considering that the festival turned out to be a coronation for women in film, in addition to being a celebration its host metropolis (a series of pre-screening clips from Toronto-based films honored the city's 175th anniversary). Besides showcasing upcoming femme-centric fall releases as "Bright Star," "An Education," "Whip It!" and "Fish Tank," the festival ended up bestowing audience awards upon the coming-of-age drama "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" and the doc "The Topp Twins," which focuses on a pair of lesbian sisters and musicians who have been entertaining New Zealand for the past three decades. (A full list of winners can be found here.)

The best and the worst thing that can be said about "The Young Victoria" is that it left me wanting more. During a brisk 96 minutes, we witness the rise of Queen Victoria »

Big-name guest stars add magic to Merlin

Arthurian adventure series Merlin returns to BBC1 this weekend with a host of big-name guest stars joining the regular cast for its 13-week run.

Having enchanted audiences of more than 6.3 million in its inaugural series, the show promises more magic, mystery, adventure and romance for Season 2 as the young wizard struggles to keep his powers hidden in the increasingly perilous world of Camelot.

Mackenzie Crook (Pirates Of The Caribbean, The Office, Skins, Demons) is to guest-star in the opening episode as the creepy Cedric (pictured right), who is determined to muscle in on Merlin's position as Arthur's right-hand-man - much to the sorcerer's frustration.

Sarah Parish (Mistresses, Cutting It) will play a horrible troll masquerading as the beautiful Lady Catrina; Adrian Lester (Hustle, Bonekickers) is the devious Myror; Charles Dance (Bleak House, Gosford Park) will guest-star as Aredian, the sinister Witchfinder; and Santiago Cabrera (Heroes) returns as the dashing Lancelot. »

tMF Oscarwatch: The Young Victoria disappoints...?

Is this Emily Blunt's year? I really hope so... Even though this is also the year fellow British actress Carey Mulligan (via An Education) made her magnificent acting known outside of the UK. So how was Blunt's acting as the young Victoria? Is the movie Oscar-worthy? Is her performance Oscar-worthy? Says Empire:

An elegant, entertaining, informative picture with a gallery of vivid supporting turns, this provisionally crowns the winning Blunt as a Brit-pic star - but it skimps a bit on the bodice-ripping, blood and thunder. - - -

There's something about donning a Queen's crown that brings out the best in actresses. Cate Blanchett, Helen Mirren and Judi Dench have thrived as monarchs, and now it's the turn of Emily Blunt to take on an iconic British ruler. Blaming her "sly eyes" for constantly being cast as bad girls, »

Dance Fuming At 'Airhead' Hilton

13 August 2009 1:01 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Gosford Park star Charles Dance has blasted Paris Hilton after TV bosses decided to air the socialite's reality series instead of his new drama.

The veteran British actor's new programme Trinity was scheduled to broadcast in the U.K. earlier this year but it was delayed until September - and replaced by the heiress' show Paris Hilton's British Best Friend.

Dance is now calling for the end of reality shows after catching a glimpse of Hilton's "c**p" programme, in which the blonde sets tests for a group of wannabes in the search for a true pal.

He says, "We're putting too much energy into junk and reality television. This show was going to be shown in January or February. But they shelved it until September to put you know what in its place? Paris Hilton's British Best Friend, which is possibly the most execrable piece of television I've ever seen in my life. God knows what the ratings were. It's a piece of television for airheads, starring an airhead.

"It's just beyond me. Endless hours of reality television - surely by now there must be a consensus that it's c**p?" »

Apparition to Release Blunt's 'Young Victoria' This November

10 August 2009 3:11 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Based on reviews I've read so far it doesn't sound like Jean-Marc Vallee's The Young Victoria will be any kind of serious Oscar contender, but the film is still making the festival rounds and will close the Toronto Film Festival so there is still a chance for the buzz to improve. On top of that, it was announced today that Bob Berney and Bill Pohald's new distribution house, Apparition, have acquired the picture for a November 13 release. Quoted by Anne Thompson, Berney said of the film, "It feels like an Anne Hathaway breakout role. Emily Blunt could be very awards-friendly." The picture was written by Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) and stars Blunt as Queen Victoria in the turbulent first years of her reign. Rupert Friend portrays Prince Albert, the suitor who wins her heart and becomes her partner in this spectacular romance. The film also features Paul Bettany, Miranda Richardson, »

Sam Worthington to Replace Tom Cruise in ‘The Tourist’

Hollywood's latest it man, Sam Worthington, has shown little acting chops to date. Sure, he co-headlined Terminator Salvation with Christian Bale earlier this summer, but that isn't saying much -- even Bale had an off-movie on that one. And sure, he's James Cameron's pick of the litter to lead the soon-to-be-mega sci-fi epic Avatar, but that's not out yet. Despite all that, Worthington continues to score big roles. He's top-lining the upcoming remake of Clash of the Titans, and now he'll be replacing Tom Cruise in the lead role in Bharat Nalluri's The Tourist. Worthington will star alongside Charlize Theron as a man chosen by a female interpol agent to act as bait for a wanted criminal in France. The film is based on a 2005 French film called Anthony Zimmer, directed by Jerome Salle.
