Diddy Celebrates His 40th Birthday

4 November 2009 11:12 AM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

If you happen to pass by Sean Combs, be sure to wish him a happy birthday, as the man better known as Diddy turns 40 years old today. While it's bizarre to think if Diddy as a guy in the depths of middle age, it's also odd to think that he isn't older. Diddy has been such a dominant, ubiquitous force in pop culture since the '90s that it's almost as if he has always been with us. There have been countless highs (smash hits like "It's All About the Benjamins," "I'll Be Missing You" and "Bad Boy for Life") and devastating lows (most notably the death of his friend the Notorious B.I.G.), but he has certainly changed the face of hip-hop and gave rise to the idea of diversification among pop stars. He's dabbled in fashion, fragrances, restaurants and alcohol, and his empire is constantly expanding.

Q&A: Warren G Does Not Recommend Investing in Citigroup or The Crips

24 September 2009 10:01 PM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Back in the carefree 90s, when disposable income and non-disappearing 401Ks were still the norm, hip-hop’s financial bravado seemed entirely appropriate. The bling, the champagne, the limos bursting at the seams with strippers; all of rap’s recurring motifs nicely complimented our national mood, and made us feel a little less guilty about being so obnoxiously wealthy. But then the aughts came along, with its buzz-killing recession that ate into our Cristal and stripclub budgets, and suddenly hip-hop’s never-ending party seemed a little irresponsible and show-offy. The rap community has been slow to respond to the tough economic times, but it seems inevitable that we can expect less songs like “All About the Benjamins” and “Gimme Tha Loot” and more songs like “Bitch Be Takin’ Out a Second Mortgage” and “In Hindsight I Probably Shouldn’t Have Gotten Involved in Day-Tradazizzlin’”. Don’t tell that to Warren G. »

New York — Bigger than an individual, bigger than a group and overshadowing any crew, Def Jam Records celebrated its 25th anniversary Saturday night at the M2 Ultra Lounge.

The historic label's acts such as Juelz Santana, NeYo, Fabolous and singer Adrienne Bailon, as well as celebs such as Claudia Jordan, Zab Judah, Melody Thornton, Malinda Williams, Polow Da Don, Eva Pigford, Ice-t and wife Coco came out for the party.

DJ Cassidy started off the night spinning nothing but the hits from Def Jam's catalog: Onyx's "Slam," LL Cool J's "Jingling Baby," Dmx's "Get at Me Dog," Jay-z's "Can I Get A ..." and others. If you didn't already appreciate Def Jam for its trailblazing history and unprecedented longevity, you had to respect its consistent output of hits and stars. »
