Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

2012 director Roland Emmerich at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. By Javier Etxezarreta/Efe/Sipa Press. Roland Emmerich has effectively destroyed the world three times. The German-born director of Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow ups the apocalyptic ante in 2012, which is both his latest movie and the year the Maya calendar predicts the world will come to an end. He's not shy about depicting tsunamis in Asia and collapsing twin skyscrapers in the United States—events that, yes, feel all too familiar. He’s also not shy about where he feels the blame should go for the real-life problems that plague the world: squarely on the shoulders of our 43rd president. Emmerich’s pleasant demeanor disappears when the subject of Maine’s recent vote repealing the legalization of gay marriage is discussed. Emmerich, who is openly gay and a staunch supporter of gay rights, perhaps feels his own »

I typically end up missing out on most kid films during their theatrical runs (there just isn't enough time to catch all the G-Forces of the world), but I recently caught up with the money-making monster that is Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs from the comfort of my own couch. Between watching baby dinosaurs swallow other baby Ice Age critters and thinking about winter's approach, my mind soon drifted towards some of my favorite ice-set moments in film.
I don't know what it is, but having nice, frozen centerpieces in a flick always lure me in. Though I do have my limits, as you won't be finding any of the brain pain that is 10,000 BC on here. Note, these are in no order of importance.

A few months ago we were treated to a mysterious teaser for a new film titled Despicable Me, which had a cornucopia of comedic names attached to it like Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Will Arnett, Kristin Wiig, Russel Brand, and Danny McBride. We’re finally getting a bit more of the puzzle solved as the second trailer for the film has hit the web.
The film focuses on Gru (Carell), the world’s #2 super villain, who is constantly at the throat of #1, his competition and enemy, Vector (Segel). The film takes a few interesting turns, which force Gru to rethink his evil ways.
The film comes from the studio and animation department that brought us Ice Age, Robots, and Horton Hears a Who! and the writing team who brough us Bubble Boy and The Santa Clause 2. Check out the second teaser after the jump, which focuses on the rivalry between Gru and Vector. »

As Pixar’s catalog expands, it is hard not to get more and more critical of animated films from other studios, as they seemingly become harder and harder to watch. There are a few exceptions. DreamWorks on occasion finds a niche and creates a hit, but most still find themselves in a rut, lacking the sophistication of Pixar and creating titles that play down to their audiences and frankly lack the same visual flair. The original Ice Age (2002) found a nice spot for itself in the animated mix. While it didn’t exactly exceed its competition in any respect, Ice Age had plenty of wit and enough character to carry it successfully. With a unique ensemble cast including Ray Romano, Denis Leary and Queen Latifah, the film told a fun story of unlikely friendships, with good humor in the form of Scrat’s quest for an acorn. But fast forward »

I’d never been introduced to the Ice Age films until this most recent outing. Oh sure, I’d heard of them and was mildly interesting in seeing the first one, but for whatever reason I never got to it. The first did receive pretty decent reviews while the second was pretty much reviled by anyone under seven. Fox still thinks there’s an appeal (or they heard the term “Strike!”) and have decided to give us a third entry in the franchise.
And I’m sure the film will play well to kids, as well it should. It’s not exactly a terrible movie, but it’s not without it’s problems either. The biggest one in my opinion stems from how unnatural the actors seem to be at times. A couple of times I felt the actors were talking “at” each other rather than “to” each other. The »

Denis Leary once told me he didn't know who thought he would be a good person to voice a saber tooth tiger in the first Ice Age movie. He just "thanked heaven they did." (Actually, Leary used rather more explicit language. But that probably goes without saying.) The comedian and Rescue Me star also admitted that they "might as well" have delivered his wages for the phenomenally successful second Ice Age movie in a truck. Leary's words sprang to mind upon viewing the new trailer for next year's supervillain-oriented animated movie Despicable Me, a film from Ice Age exec producer Chris Meledandri. »

Dir: Robert Zemeckis Cast: Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins Last night saw the breaking of a few festive world records in a decidedly Dickensian Leicester Square. Firstly, opera singer Andrea Bocelli lead the largest Christmas Carol ‘sing-along’ from the Square, as revellers across London joined in after the official ‘turning on’ of the Christmas lights. Then Disney, in collaboration with Sky Movies HD, hosted the largest ever ‘3D premiere’ for their new film ‘A Christmas Carol’. Anyone who worries that Christmas has sold its soul should have headed to central London last night: Disney have bought the entire centre’s Christmas lights, so Jim Carey’s performance-captured face will be staring down at us from all over the shopping district until the dawn of 2010. But in Disney’s defence – and not wanting to cry ‘humbug’ too loud on this joyous occasion – the premiere was a success and »

"Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" debuted at No. 1 on both the national home video sales and rental charts Wednesday. The DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of the third installment in the animated family franchise, which grossed just under $200 million in U.S. theaters, was heavily promoted by 20th Century Fox. Launch events included a media day for "mommy bloggers" and the unveiling of a giant ice sculpture of Scrat, one of the film's most prominent characters."Ice Age" generated 11% of its sales from the Blu-ray Disc edition during the week ended November 1. That's a surprisingly high percentage for a family film, but actual unit sales weren't enough to dislodge "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" from the No. 1 spot on the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc chart. In its second week in stores, "Transformers" generated 24% of its total sales from the Blu-ray Disc edition. »

Chicago – When did “gentleness” first become “unhip” in children’s films? Practically every studio in America, with the exception of Pixar, feels the need to make their “all ages” entertainment as abrasive, dumb and crude as their escapism targeted at teens and simple-minded adults. What’s the difference between a picture like “G-Force” and “Transformers”? A handful of swears and a few excessive shots of Megan Fox’s midriff. Kids movies in America can get away with endless mean-spirited gags and bathroom humor, just as long as there’s a sticky moral tacked on to the end. The “Shrek” series flourished under this principle, and so does “Ice Age.”
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0
Yet while DreamWorks has found financial success with multiple franchises (“Shrek,” “Madagascar,” “Kung Fu Panda”), Blue Sky Studios still insists on focusing most of its moviemaking efforts on the decade-old premise of prehistoric creatures riffing through an arctic wasteland. »

Ice Age, Dawn of the Dinosaurs is the third installment of the Ice Age franchise, and comes to Blu-ray (with DVD included) via directors Carlos Saldanda (director of the other Ice Ages and Robots) and Mike Thurmeier (also director of the other Ice Age movies and Robots) and writers Peter Ackerman and Michael Berg (writers of 2002.s Ice Age). A lot of fun for the kiddies, Ice Age 3 is voiced by return star talents to the franchise John Leguizamo (Sid), Queen Latifah (Ellie), and Dennis Leary (Diego). There are actually two stories going on: Scrat chasing the acorn and finding love and competition for his precious acorn along the way, and the mammoths Ellie (Latifah) and Manny.s »

Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs is one of those incredibly rare third installments, because it's far better than the first two films. Though I'm not sure that's true for the little ones, it's certainly true for me. The first films were fine enough, but they overused the gags they built up, and some of the angles that played toward the smaller crowd went on too long. As we open this one, Manny is in worried father mode as Ellie is about to expand the herd. Diego is feeling out of place in the new "settling down" arrangement that our curious herd is adopting, and Sid stumbles upon some eggs and decides to start a family of his own. These turn out to be dinosaur eggs, and our little group soon learns that there is another world going about its merry existence below them, and this one is filled with »

I received a few contrary comments in September when I claimed that the real top five movies of the summer may not have included Transformers and Harry Potter, the movies that made the most money. Instead, among big time summer movies, I argued that The Hangover, The Proposal, Ice Age, Up, and Star Trek were greater successes because most of their money came after the first two weeks of release, the point at which the majority of movies scale back on their advertising efforts and make money based solely on word of mouth.
Extending that argument, I pointed in particular to the success of The Hangover and The Proposal, modestly budgeted comedies that wound up making about thirteen and seven times their production costs in global revenue. If you don't think the profit margins matter, ask DreamWorks why there's not going to be a sequel to Monsters vs. Aliens, which »

Chicago – Many editions of the DVD Round-Up have featured a different genre and focus for each title within it. This week seems a little more thematically linked as we have a trio of foreign horror films and a few more independent films than usual. Of course, there has to a holiday comedy to spice things up.
Consider this column informational with synopsis, tech specs, and special features info for titles that might go otherwise unnoticed, but if you’re looking for more critical opinion, we covered “Sauna” when it played at the EU Film Fest, “Medicine For Melancholy” when it was available on IFC Direct, and “Nothing Like the Holidays” when it played in theaters.

Running Time: 1 hr 35 mins
Rating: PG

Along the way they meet Buckminster, (Pegg), a somewhat psychotic weasel who is set on taking down a giant beast named Rudy.
Who’S It For? Because they don’t likely have an adequate grasp on the idea of quality at a single digit age, kids will enjoy the breeziness of this movie. Parents will get a good nap in, possibly dreaming about watching an earlier Ice Age movie, or hell – or even more likely, a Pixar film.

It’s perfectly fair to ask if Ice Age’s introduction of dinosaurs shows an udder disdain for any sense of chronological integrity. The answer? Yes. Clearly that’s not the point. In fact, if you’re only now asking that question after making it through the second Ice Age movie it’s no wonder you think this series has any scientific bearing. Although, if you want to make a movie about prehistoric times without pissing off creationists and scientists what better strategy is there than ditching both sides and just going balls to the wall with nonsense? Oh, and dinosaurs. You gotta have dinosaurs. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, desperate for a new plot device, introduces a secret underground world where time stood still (and oddly temperate) allowing dinosaurs to go on living. In theaters we received a rather impressive 3D presentation, however, for Blu-ray it’s been »

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs was just released on DVD and Blu-ray on October 27 and the folks at Fox Home Entertainment celebrated the release in an innovative (and record-breaking) way. The studio unveiled a mammoth ice sculpture of the popular Scrat character in Santa Monica, California recently, and the 48-foot-8-inch sculpture earned a place in the Guiness Book of World Records for the tallest ice sculpture. Take a look below at a time-lapsed video of the sculpture and you can click on the image below to access the new gallery from the event.
