The phrase "let's shag ass" was taken from the movie The Last Detail (1973) starring Jack Nicolson.

According to the director's commentary, "I'm going to kill myself tomorrow" is a quote taken from Le feu follet, a film that influenced The Royal Tenenbaums.

Richie Tenenbaum is somewhat based on Björn Borg (b. 1956), who won 11 tennis Grand Slam titles before a surprise retirement aged just 26. Borg was rumoured to have later attempted suicide, but denied this. Both wear the same headband and trademark Fila polo.
