Question: I just caught the tail end of Kissing Jessica Stein on TV today and I was wondering if you could tell me what writers/co-stars Heather Juergensen and Jennifer Westfeldt are up to these days? I love that movie and thought they both did brilliant jobs both writing and acting in it!

As Don Draper, the central figure in Mad Men, Jon Hamm gives one of the decade’s most iconic performances. Off camera, the actor plays down his matinee idol looks, hiding behind thick stubble, heavy eyeglass frames, and a greasy baseball cap pulled low over his forehead. But he’s a relaxed, easy talker and a man with many interests outside of acting, including mathematics. Preparing my feature on Mad Men in this month’s issue of Vanity Fair, I interviewed Hamm over fish tacos at a restaurant in Los Feliz, not far from the home he shares with his longtime girlfriend, the actress and writer Jennifer Westfeldt (Kissing Jessica Stein). He talked about waiting tables in Los Angeles, getting cast on Mad Men, and how a handshake with Elisabeth Moss sent lightning bolts of pain shooting through him. Kissing Jessica Stein star Jennifer Westfeldt had a short stint at Seattle Grace when she was featured on a handful of episodes of Grey's Anatomy. She also went to visit Addison for an episode of Private Practice.
Meanwhile, she launched a production company with partner Jon Hamm, the star of AMC's hit Mad Men.
And now she'll be on our television screens regularly as journalist Meredith Reed on Fox's 24.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that Westfeldt's character will "have ties to Arman Hashemi (Anil Kapoor of Slumdog Millionaire), a Middle East leader who comes to the U.S. on a peacemaking mission." Sounds like a great role, though much different from the hilarious depiction of a straight woman trying to explore her sexuality in Jessica Stein.
Production on the eighth season of 24 begins today, so fans of the show will see Jennifer in her recurring role this fall.

Two new castmembers for Season 8 of Fox’s aging action-adventure show 24 have been announced. Jennifer Westfeldt and John Boyd join the cast as recurring characters. Jennifer Westfeldt (”Kissing Jessica Stein”, below) will play a character name Meredith Reed, an ambitious journalist (aren’t they all?) with ties to Arman Hashemi (Anil Kapoor), the Middle East leader who comes to the U.S. on a peacemaking mission (supposedly, this is 24, after all) and ends up being targeted by terrorists (supposedly). Boyd, meanwhile, will play a systems analyst in the newly re-activated CTU named Jonah Schwartz, who may or may not be a mole. Look, when you play anyone associated with CTU, it’s almost a given you’re either a total neurotic freak or you’re a mole. You can’t be both, or neither. According to THR, production on the eighth season of 24 is set to begin today. Nine more roles are still being cast. »

Producers of Fox's 24 are already working on the show's upcoming 8th season. Jennifer Westfeldt, who has recently did an arc in Grey's Anatomy and also starred in 2002's Kissing Jessica Stein, is set to join in a recurring role as Meredith Reed. The character will be an ambitious journalist that has ties to Arman Hashemi, who will be played by Slumdog Millionaire star Anil Kapoor. Also cast is actor John Boyd, who will play a CTU systems analyst. As we previously reported, CTU will apparently be reassembled (perhaps because of the success of Chloe O'Brian in thwarting terrorists in Season 7). Day 8 of 24 will be set in New York City and is set to begin production this month. The season will follow the typical airing schedule and will premiere next January. »

The problem with many movies that have gay characters as their focus, is that instead of being about ‘something’ and having gay characters, they are about ‘being gay’. That (despite the backlash it’s sure to cause) just isn’t interesting. Maybe, it’s because I’m not, but movies about ‘being heterosexual’ aren’t interesting either (or very common). In fact, movies about ‘being a part of any group’ are movies, in my opinion, that start out with a goal that’s a waste of time. Of course, the politically correct atmosphere that exists serves to mask this fact to some degree. Making a movie of this general nature, when it’s about ‘being some minority’, is seen as having some sort of merit that magically transcends this uninterestingness. Should anyone have the audacity to make a movie about ‘being a white, heterosexual male’, I think we would soon »
