Chicago – When a New York subway dispatcher finds himself locked in a tense battle of the wits with a deranged criminal onboard Pelham 123, he’s offered this bit of advice from a seasoned hostage negotiator: don’t enter his world. The same warning could be issued to viewers intent on entering the world of Tony Scott. It is a cinematic landscape that is alternately marred and enhanced by Add.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
With his ever-changing frame rate and rapid editing, Scott speeds through his story until he lands on a part that sparks his interest; often a moment of physical or emotional violence. This plays out in extreme slo-mo, halting the movement and blurring the action to such an extent that the audience feels like they have been punched in the head.
The Taking of Pelham 123 was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on November 3rd, 2009.

Between the openings of Where the Wild Things Are and Law Abiding Citizen and the nationwide expansion of Paranormal Activity, overall weekend business was booming by October standards, leaping 39 percent ahead of last year and posting a record gross for the timeframe.
Where the Wild Things Are emitted an estimated $32.5 million howl on approximately 5,000 screens at 3,735 sites, including over $3.1 million at 145 IMAX sites. The picture's daily box office pattern suggested that it didn't play like a typical family picture, rising only two percent on Saturday, and the demographics bore this out. According to distributor Warner Bros., the audience composition was 43 percent 18 years and older, 14 percent 12-17 years old, 27 percent parents who had kids under 12, and 16 percent kids under 12, and it was 55 percent female.
While Where the Wild Things Are wasn't earth-shattering, it clawed its way into the top tier among debuts for children's book adaptations that aren't Harry Potter and »

Remember when Ben Affleck was Hollywood's new dramatic 'it' kid? Just after Armageddon and Good Will Hunting, when he was said to be the next big action star on the block. He did that movie with Sam Jackson, Changing Lanes, and he scored a huge role as the next Jack Ryan in The Sum of All Fears. He was supposed to take over the franchise, reboot this iconic character made famous by the great Harrison Ford. It was going to be glorious... What happened to that? To quote a sci-fi show that none of you have probably ever heard of, all of this has happened before, all of this will happen again. Variety's Mike Fleming is reporting today that Star Trek star and new Hollywood 'it' guy Chris Pine is in negotiations to play CIA Analyst Jack Ryan in the reboot of the franchise based on Tom Clancy's novels. Allegories about sacrificed morality in a world shaded gray play well with audiences. Court room dramas, police procedurals and other formulas all offer protagonists with fading ethics in face of huge salaries and payoffs – but everything is tinged with a formal air. Either events happen in uniforms or court rooms, but either way the feature never delves to deep into the faults of true humanity. Changing Lanes focuses on a lawyer but forgoes the legal plot in favor of two men dipping below the law in favor of a more primitive solution. The entire scenario breathes fresh life into the common morality tale with its raw take on the pits of human rage – but the road it takes to get there leans too heavily on serendipitous chance.

A decent assortment of new DVDs in stores this week, from My Bloody Valentine 3-D to the early surprise hit of the year, Paul Blart: Mall Cop (err... you'll have to look past those ones to get to the good stuff). The Tom Cruise Nazi thriller Valkyrie is in stores today, and might make a good double bill with Fritz Lang's 1941 film Man Hunt which is hitting DVD for the first time. Then there's Howard McCain's viking vs alien epic Outlander, which might make a good double bill with The Asylum's direct-to-video monster battle Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus! The Star Wars comedy Fanboys is finally out on DVD (in the U.S. at least), along with the first season of True Blood and the seventh season of 24. See anything worth picking up? Chicago – Paramount Home Video is unleashing waves of catalog titles this month. It started with the comedy wave last Tuesday and continues with a diverse slate of action films this week.
Like the comedy set, the films have very little in common other than their genre (and even that is a bit sketchy with “The Machinist” bearing little resemblance to “Paycheck”). The highlights of the wave are clearly “3 Days of the Condor,” “The Machinist,” and “Changing Lanes” with “Enemy at the Gates” certainly having enough visual power to warrant a look in HD. “Paycheck”? Good luck with that one.
All five titles were released on Tuesday, May 19th, 2009.
“3 Days of the Condor”

This week probably stacks up as the best for new releases this year - especially considering the range of different titles and genres available - so there should be something for everyone in this edition. As always, check out our “pick of the week” and links to all of the new releases below.
First up, we have a spectacular 6 disc “Terminator 2 Limited Edition Complete Collector’s Set in an Endoskull”, which is by far the most extravagant and innovative release on this format so far. It contains every version of the film you could want, and more special features than you can shake a T-1000 at. And the Endoskull looks Fantastic. Bear in mind, this is a limited release and no one is sure whether further copies of the set will be issued, so you might want to snap one up quickly. There is also a far more affordable 2-disc “Skynet” edition of the film, »

Now that he has Star Trek in the can and ready for release, J.J. Abrams is rounding up the cast for his next flick. Okay, so he’s not directing (only producing) but the man has become a brand of his own much like Judd Apatow - must be something about having the initials J.A.
Morning Glory is a newsroom comedy that is set to star Harrison Ford and Rachael McAdams. The film now has two new cast members to round out the cast and they’re A-list talent.
Diane Keaton and Jeff Goldblum have now signed on to the Roger Michell directed comedy. According to Variety:
“(The film) centers on an aspiring news producer (McAdams) who tries to save a failing morning show by getting control of its feuding anchors. Ford and Keaton will play the dueling on-air personalities. Goldblum will portray McAdams’ boss.”

Variety reports Diane Keaton and Jeff Goldblum have signed on to join Harrison Ford and Rachel McAdams in the Roger Michell directed comedy Morning Glory for Paramount Pictures, which is scheduled to begin filming next month in New York. The film, which is not a remake of the 1933 Katharine Hepburn starrer that won the actress an Oscar, centers on an aspiring news producer (McAdams) who tries to save a failing morning show by getting control of its feuding anchors. Ford and Keaton will play the dueling on-air personalities. Goldblum will portray McAdams' boss. Aline Brosh McKenna who had a hand in the upcoming musical remake Fame and also adapted the Lauren Weisberger novel "The Devil Wears Prada" penned the script. Based on the premise of the film, if you are looking for comparisons in Michell's directorial work the most obvious film would probably be Notting Hill. The only other Michell »

Tristan Wilds, who had a recurring role on HBO’s The Wire and who can currently be seen on CW’s 90210, has joined the George Lucas-produced WWII film, Red Tails.
