Professor Ackerman: Unprecedented, historical categories. More Americans died in the so-called Civil War than in the two World Wars combined. 618,000. Although popular media usually portrays the Civil War as a series of epic battles for honor and glory the reality is far from either. General Sherman's march through South Carolina alone cost over 8,000 innocent Southerners their lives.

H.G. Lewis, the "Godfather Of Gore", provides the inspiration here for this remake/re-imagining of his minor cult classic, 2000 Maniacs. If you are familiar with his work then you should love this, it's kind of just like a movie perfectly marrying his sensibilities with a decent budget and cast.
Robert Englund plays the main bad guy, a good ole Southerner helping his townsfolk enjoy their "jubilee celebrations" with the help of some home cookin' from Lin Shaye and willing victims in the shape of sidetracked (aren't they always?) teens.
There's plenty of nudity and crazy gore and it's all very tongue in cheek. Some of the sex scenes have amusing punchlines and most of the gore is ridiculously over the top, well executed but never anything to take too seriously.
Add some fun song lyrics, running gags about bestiality and a brisk pace in between the disappearance of each character (yeah, it's one of those movies where people disappear one by one without raising too much suspicion) and you have a fun movie for fans of horror that doesn't care how you look down upon it as long as you are looking.
See this if you like: 2000 Maniacs, Hellblock 13, Cabin Fever.
NB, this review was adapted from the original written under my old RockySchlockyRobot ID that I have long forgotten how to access.
