A fascinating premise of a young Irish-American boy who witnesses a local gang leader beating a Jewish storekeeper into a coma, and how he befriends a local rabbi who teaches him how to make a golem. The best parts of the movie are the scenes that develop the friendship between the kid and the rabbi, and the payoff at the end where we see the golem. The Irish parts are all terribly hackneyed and flat, and the whole plot with the gang we've seen a million times. If you catch the last 45 minutes on Showtime, it's not bad. The first hour varies between boring and painful. If you want to see Golem, rent the 1925 classic "The Golem."
