'Salt' Gender Change Addressed

23 June 2009 12:51 AM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Director Phillip Noyce has finally addressed the gender change issue of "Salt". In an interview with Dark Horizons, the 59-year-old filmmaker spilled the bean on what really happens behind the lead character's gender change and how far it affects the action thriller's story.

"Tom wasn't prepared to commit to the script as it was - I mean, his main fears were that the character was too close to Ethan Hunt [Tom's character in 'Mission: Impossible'], being a rogue spy, with extraordinary abilities," he first discussed about what made Tom Cruise out of the project. "So over many months, we tried to twist and turn the story to differentiate the character of Edwin Salt from Ethan Hunt. But, you know, he had a valid point."

Explaining that the project then went into hiatus, Noyce noted that Sony Pictures' co-chairman Amy Pascal suggested to give the script to Angelina Jolie and create a female spy franchise. "Then in September last year, »

Movie Review - 'Is Anybody There?'

1 May 2009 4:06 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Is Anybody There?

Starring Michael Caine and Bill Milner

Directed by John Crowley

Rated PG-13

Michael Caine is a consummate actor. Where he ranks all-time is impossible to say, because Caine has always been open to doing absolutely horrible films for money, whereas you'd never have to worry about Daniel Day-Lewis at the top of his game making Jaws: The Revenge. And in spite of those terrible movies, can you honestly say Caine is ever boring in his performances?

He's played everything, most of them a couple of times, and to his great credit, he continues to not just deliver knockouts every now and then but also to raise the bar for everyone in his profession.

Caine understands, perhaps better than any other actor, that people go see Jaws: The Revenge, Blame it on Rio, and Miss Congeniality, and that even those roles help him prepare for great work in »

Opening Night - Brendan Fraser Says Inkheart Doesn't Condescend to Kids

22 January 2009 11:00 PM, PST | amctv.com - AMC News: Opening Night | See recent amctv.com - AMC News: Opening Night news »

During the New York premiere of Inkheart, Brendan Fraser was a lone Yank, floating in a sea of Brits (Helen Mirren topped the list). This is not the first time that the actor has starred opposite English heavyweights (ie. The Quiet American with Michael Caine and Gods and Monsters with Ian McKellan). Could it be that the man most famous for fronting the Mummy franchise (originally with Rachel Weisz, another Brit!) is really an anglophile at heart? Maybe. But judging by our video interview, his latest endeavor was fueled by a deep admiration of the best-selling kiddie novel that the film was based on. »

Tom Hooper is set to direct the big-screen adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel "East of Eden" for Univerdal Pictures and producer Brian Grazer.

According to Variety, Christopher Hampton is on board to write the film, a retelling of the Cain and Abel story. The trade says "the multigenerational story focuses on the Trask brothers and a woman who comes between the siblings."

Studios became interested in Steinbeck's book when it jumped to the top of bestseller lists in 2004. Ron Howard was originally attached to direct the film, but he recently dropped out.

Hooper most recently helmed HBO's acclaimed television event "John Adams," which won four Golden Globes. As for Hampton, he penned the screenplay for "Atonement" and "The Quiet American."

Hooper told Variety, "There is an opportunity to show the sex, violence and darkness of Steinbeck's work, along with the optimism and celebration of love."

When you were munching popcorn while watching blockbusters last summer, were you secretly wishing that swashbuckling adventure heroes Indiana Jones and Rick O'Connell could be teamed up together in a quiet, sensitive, modern-day medical drama? If so, then your sweet, hopeless dreams are about to be fulfilled!

Harrison Ford has already been announced as the star and producer of Crowley, based on the true story of the Crowley family, whose two children suffered from a rare genetic disorder (as Elisabeth R. kindly informed us last June). Ford is set to play a medical researcher, and now Brendan Fraser (Aka Rick O'Connell in Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon and other Mummy movies) is apparently ready to play the title role, according to Production Weekly, as reported by Coming Soon.

The movie is based on The Cure, a book by Wall Street Journal writer Geeta Anand. Crowley quit his job and »
