Cellmate Reports Polanski Received Special Treatment Behind Bars

27 November 2009 5:26 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Roman Polanski received preferential treatment behind bars in Switzerland, according to the filmmaker's former cellmate.

The director was arrested and jailed in September in relation to 32-year-old child sex charges in America, and he's currently fighting extradition to the U.S.

Earlier this week (begs23Nov09), Polanski was granted a bail request and will spend Christmas and the New Year under house arrest at his alpine chalet in Gstaad.

And now his former cellmate, Yussi Akram, has told a Swiss radio station the exiled The Pianist director was the envy of fellow prisoners - because he was allowed to call his wife and attorneys frequently.

And his cell was equipped with a special emergency button he could use to summon guards.

But the moviemaker's longtime friend Janusz Morgenstern has told a Polish radio network that Polanski's two-month prison stay has taken its toll on the director: "His fear of the U.S. verges on panic and he has lived with that fear for so long that it's become obsessive."

Morgenstern reveals his pal has become severely depressed and has lost a considerable amount of weight behind bars.

Polanski was found guilty of molesting a 13-year-old girl at a Hollywood party in 1977. He fled to Paris, France on the eve of sentencing in 1978. »

Polanski wins $4.5M bail, house arrest likely

Roman Polanski has been granted $4.5 million bail, clearing the way for the fugitive director to move within days from a Swiss jail to house arrest and electronic monitoring at his Alpine resort chalet. The justice minister said Wednesday she saw no reason to appeal the surprise decision by the Swiss Criminal Court. Polanski would have to remain in Switzerland as authorities assess whether to extradite him to the U.S. for having sex in Los Angeles in 1977 with a 13-year-old girl.Ministry spokesman Folco Galli said the final decision on transferring Polanski to his chalet in the Swiss resort of Gstaad would be made "quickly.""The 76-year-old appellant is married and the father of two minors," the court said as it considered Polanski's offer of a cash bail secured by his apartment in Paris. "It can be assumed that as a responsible father he will, »

Roman Polanksi Granted Bail

Sorry, Kirstie Alley. It seems the Free Roman Polanski Brigade has won out. Or has it? The Swiss Criminal Court today accepted the Oscar-winning filmmaker's $4.5 million cash bail deal that would allow him to leave a Zurich jail for house arrest and electronic monitoring at his Swiss chalet. Naturally, Swiss authorities aren't so keen on the idea of letting their prize catch go, given his history of running from the law. Two previous requests by his attorneys were rejected outright. This time, however, the price was right. While the justice minister says he won't appeal the bail decision, the 72-year-old The Pianist director will be under close watch as officials continue weighing whether... »

Roman Polanski is reportedly undergoing medical treatment, according to Reuters. His lawyer Herve Temime told Reuters, "All I know is that he has been taken from prison for medical attention. I don't know where he is or when he will be returned to prison." Temime visited the film director last week in a Zurich jail. He says Polanski was depressed and tired at the time of the visit. Polanski, director of the acclaimed film 'The Pianist,' was arrested in September in Switzerland for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977. Roman Polanski Still Directing From Prison

16 October 2009 12:13 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Roman Polanski is putting the finishing touches to latest movie The Ghost, despite being in jail. He wants to ensure it is completed in time for the Berlin film festival in February 2010.

This unusual situation for the movie industry opens up a range of questions. Will the film be as good without this great director being there for the finishing edits? Will some people feel it’s morally wrong for him to be doing this whilst in jail? And finally, will it make people less keen to see the movie, or is all publicity good publicity?

Speaking at the Cheltenham Literature festival, Ghost scribe Robert Harris said Polanski was still able to communicate to the people finishing the movie for him. Polanski has also recently given instructions to the film’s composer, Alexandre Desplat, who scored music for The Queen and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

I don't think he can make phone calls, but he can communicate," Harris told The Times."What people think of the film is another matter. Whether the film can rise above the circumstances in which the director now finds himself I don't know. Brody Becomes The Prey In New Predator Movie

7 October 2009 12:01 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Slender actor Adrien Brody will be stepping into Arnold Schwarzenegger's musclebound role in the new Predator movie.

Director Robert Rodriguez is rebooting the sci-fi movie franchise, which saw the now California governor battle a killer alien in the 1987 original.

Now, Oscar-winner Brody is set to take on a pack of the dreadlocked extra-terrestrials in the franchise's latest outing, which is set to hit cinemas in July 2010.

The Pianist star will play the leader of a fearless band of warriors, who are being hunted by the bloodthirsty Predators.

The monster has previously featured in a 1990 sequel, starring Danny Glover, as well as two spin-offs from the Alien films, 2004's Alien vs. Predator and 2007's Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem. »

Brody to Join Predators Cast

7 October 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Adrien Brody:  sci-fi action star?  It seems to be, according to Variety.  20th Century Fox has added Brody, famous for his Oscar-winning role in maligned director Roman Polanski's The Pianist, to the cast of Robert Rodriguez' Predators.  Variety claims that "Brody is playing a character close to (the Schwarzenegger lead) in the 1987 original. He's a mercenary who tries to keep his team alive when its members are hunted by the aliens."

Okay, I'll say it.  This seems like the biggest case of miscasting since Kate Bosworth inhabited the role of Lois Lane and trampled it.  Brody has played edgy roles in Summer Of Sam and The Jacket, but he doesn't seem lively enough to pull off a role that requires this much charisma.  And let's face it:  physically, he's way too small (he roughly weighs as much as Arnold's left calf).  Hopefully I'm wrong about this one, »

Brody Becomes an Action Hero in Predator Reboot

7 October 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Remember Adrien Brody? He’s the chap who played Wladyslaw Szpilman in the Pianist for which he won an Oscar. The Pianist is up there as one of my all-time favourite movies. He has also appeared in The Village and King Kong. This news today has surprised me a bit since it’s so different to the roles he normally plays.

Variety are reporting that Brody wants to reinvent himself as an action hero and has signed up for the lead role in ‘Predators’, the prequel to the movie made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987.

Variety: Brody and his Paradigm reps lobbied hard for the role. Fox has high hopes to spring a new franchise, and Brody has signed options to return for future installments, sources said.

I have no doubt he’ll do well in the role as every other film I’ve seen him in, he’s excelled in. »

Famous action star Adrien Brody enlists in ‘Predators’

7 October 2009 8:25 AM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

In the odder side of movie news, Adrien Brody (The Pianist) has signed on to Nimrod Antal’s Predators for 20th Century Fox. The Oscar-winning actor will join Danny Trejo (Machete), Topher Grace, Alice Braga, made-up actor Mahershalalhashbaz Ali and Oleg Taktarov for the reboot of the famed ’80s action-sci-fi feature.

“When I looked at the news from The Hollywood Reporter, I just couldn’t believe my eyes. I’m a huge Adrien Brody fan. I simply adored him in The Brothers Bloom,” said Jon Mintez of the Predator Spectators Society (Psc). “In fact, if I didn’t start a Predators club, I would start a Brody club. I wish I could suckle his nostrils.” After the call I learned that the Psc had nothing to do with the line of Predator action films…

Predators will begin shooting in November in lush forests of Hawaii and at Robert Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Texas. »

Adrien Brody Leading Predators

7 October 2009 4:26 AM, PDT | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

Fox has announced that Adrien Brody will star in the upcoming Nimrod Antal reboot of the Predator franchise, with Robert Rodriguez leading the project as producer. Brody will play the heroic soldier of fortune who battles with alien hunters in the reboot, called Predators. A hunter who ends up hunted, he is charged with leading a group of fellow mercenaries after they become the aliens' targets.

The role, originally made famous by former Mr. Universe and now Governator of California Arnie Schwarzenegger, will give Brody a chance to reinvent himself as an all-out action star. Best known for his Oscar-winning performance as Wladyslaw Szpillman in Roman Polanski's The Pianist, you'd be forgiven for thinking someone like Dwayne Johnson would be more of a fitting choice than Brody to be chasing aliens in the jungle, but all those involved must feel confident about the move, because Brody has signed the »

Adrien Brody to Star in Predators

7 October 2009 3:18 AM, PDT | movies.about.com | See recent movies.about.com news »

I didn't see this one coming... Oscar-winner Adrien Brody (The Pianist) is preparing to take over the Predator franchise, taking on a role similar to Arnold Schwarzenegger's in the original franchise. I appreciate Brody's acting ability, but I've never pictured him as an action hero.

Variety says Brody is joining Alice Braga and Danny Trejo in the action movie which is set to begin filming soon in Hawaii. This new Predators will also be shot at Robert Rodriguez' Troublemaker Studios in Texas. Rodriguez is producing the project and helped shape the script.

20th Century Fox is looking to revive the alien franchise and, according to Variety, Brody's deal is for multiple films. The last time the dreadlock-sporting alien appeared onscreen was in the under-performing 2007 film, Avpr, directed by the Strause brothers (their first feature film as directors after years in visual effects work). Adrien Brody Joins Predators

7 October 2009 12:11 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Well nobody saw this coming. The star of Nimrod Antal's Predators is not a Rock or a Vin or an undiscovered new Arnie. It's the willowy Adrien Brody. Who would've thunk it?We have, of course, seen Brody hacking through the jungle before, as Jack Driscoll in Peter Jackson's King Kong. But he's still best known for dramatic roles in films like Polanski's The Pianist, or quirky indie fare like Hollywoodland and The Darjeeling Ltd.He's clearly looking to add some more mainstream strings to his bow however, since Brody and his agents apparently lobbied hard to get the role of "a heroic mercenary who battles to keep his team alive when its members are hunted by the aliens". Is "heroic mercenary" an oxymoron? Discuss. That team also includes Danny Trejo, Alice Braga (I Am Legend), Walton Goggins (Detective Vendrell from The Shield), Ultimate Fighter Oleg Taktarov, and Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, »
