No matter what your thoughts about Michael Jackson are, no one can deny that the man was a legend in his own right. Dubbed the King of Pop, the iconic Michael Jackson has been entertaining the world since the 1960s. He was a director, a composer, a musician, a singer, a dancer, an actor, a producer, and most importantly, the inspiration to countless millions. The word "triple threat" does not even begin to describe the often misunderstood superstar. On August 29 of this year, Michael would have been celebrating his 51st birthday. Sadly, Michael Jackson passed away today at the age of 50, but he leaves us with a half-century of genuine compassion and good deeds that have helped to shape the world we now live in. The Life of Michael Jackson Michael Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana (an industrialized suburb of Chicago) in 1958. He inherited his musical gene from his father, »

We amended the box office numbers from over the weekend when the final figures revealed that The Hangover had surprised everyone by beating Up by about $800,000. Clearly, not even Warner Bros. expected that kind of response to this movie, but $45 million in three days is the third best debut ever for an R-rated comedy. The other two were Sex and the City and American Pie 2, both of which had built-in audiences.
Here's an even more staggering number for The Hangover: Not counting Martin Luther King Day and Memorial Day, the film's Monday output was the highest of any film this year, with $7.659 million. Why don't we count the Monday holidays? Because they're second Sundays, basically. The two films that won those Mondays - Paul Blart and Night at the Museum - lost 75% of their audience from Monday to Tuesday. So that's an artificial number. »

Up's 35% second-weekend drop -- allowing it to barely hang on to first place with $44.2 million, at least according to Sunday estimates -- is remarkable, placing it very nearly in Finding Nemo territory. (It's currently running around $7 million behind Pixar's highest grosser.) I am loving Up's success, not just because it's a terrific film, but because it has the least obviously commercial concept Pixar's ever tackled. (Though, as I mentioned last week, Wall-e -- which Up will now surely top -- is actually the more challenging film.)
The Hangover, meanwhile, rode great buzz and good reviews to $43.3 million, which is the second highest opening weekend ever for an R-rated comedy, behind American Pie 2. (Unless you subscribe to the ludicrous notion that Sex and the City is a comedy, in which case it's third.) If you've seen the movie, you know why it's been rapturously received. If you haven't, you should. »

While Friday night audiences were hungry for R-rated raunchiness, and propelled “The Hangover” to the top spot with a take of $16.5 million, box office analysts were predicting that a family-themed flick such as “Land of the Lost” — which reviews describe as surprisingly family-unfriendly — might overtake it with Saturday grosses. It was “Up” that triumphed over all, smacking “The Hangover” down to the #2 spot. Saturday saw Disney/Pixar’s latest bring in another $44.2 million dollars at the box office, meaning it will probably end the weekend with a firm grasp on the #1 spot.
“The Hangover” may have lost out to Pixar’s flying house fable, but it is enjoying a strong opening nonetheless. The Vegas escapade has now brought in $43.2 million, making it the third highest opening for an R-rated comedy, behind only last year’s “Sex in the City” and “American Pie 2″ in 2001.

A very close race for the top spot highlighted this weekend's box office derby, and in fact, because we're only dealing with estimated receipts, I don't know that you can say this one is decided just yet. In the end, it appears that Pixar's Up will win its second weekend with a total of $44.2 million, according to Box Office Mojo, raising its total to $137 million in two weeks.
The surprising performance of The Hangover continued through the rest of the weekend, with the R-rated comedy starting with a $16 million Friday, and finishing with $43.3 million over the three days. Up probably will walk away the winner, but because we're dealing with less than a million dollars separating the top two films, it could get even closer when the final tallies are in.
The Hangover became the fourth highest grossing R-rated comedy ever, but look at the names ahead of it: Sex and the City, »

Some Cannes footage has been put together in trailer-form for upcoming comedy Demoted, which on the strength of this taster looks pretty amusing.Mike (Sean Astin) and Rodney (Michael Vartan) are mid-level employees with a fondness for playing pranks on office jerk Ken Castro (David Cross). But when their kindly boss dies, Castro is promoted to his place and Mike and Rodney are demoted to the secretarial pool. Where, unsurprisingly, they don't cope too well. The film's directed by American Pie 2's James B. Rogers, which admittedly is no guarantee of funny, and written by Dan Callahan. Let's hope that we get a chance to see it for ourselves. »

No, these aren't the nominees for the NewNowNext Awards on Logo or Bravo's A-List Awards: MTV has opened voting for its 2009 MTV Movie Awards and once again some same-sex smooches have found their way into the Best Kiss category.
Sean Penn's NYC subway kiss with James Franco that kicks off Milk is the list's earnest gay entry, while the more blithe but somehow still kind of hot smooch between Paul Rudd and Thomas Lennon in I Love You, Man brings a bit of gay levity to the proceedings.
Here's the second clip...
This isn't the first time that gay kisses have been nominated or even won in the category (Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen won in 2007 for Talladega Nights, Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal won in 2006 for Brokeback Mountain and Seann William Scott and Jason Biggs won in 2002 for American Pie 2), but considering that this is a »

Tara Reid has reportedly dropped out of the latest instalment of the successful American Pie franchise. The actress, who played Vicki Lathum in the first two movies, was reported to have agreed to reprise the role for the straight-to-dvd American Pie Presents Book Of Love. Speaking to Moviehole, an unnamed source said: "'Her deal couldn't be completed in time...[It was] expected to close on Friday but it couldn't be done." Moviehole is reporting that Tara Reid is going back to the franchise that started it all for her, "American Pie." She will reprise her role of Vicki Lathum, from the first two films, for the straight to DVD "American Pie Presents Book of Love." Plot: Ten years after the first American Pie movie, three new hapless virgins discover the Bible hidden in the school library at East Great Falls High. Unfortunately for them, the book is ruined, and with incomplete advice, the Bible leads them on a hilarious journey to lose their virginity. For those who remember the first film, Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) used the newly learned tricks from the book on his then-girlfriend Vicki (Reid). The new movie is directed by John Putch ("Scrubs") and penned by David H. Steinberg (American Pie 2). It stars Bug Hall (Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves), Kevin M. Horton (Big Game), and Eugene Levy. »

Back in October, rumors were swirling that the American Pie series was going to make a triumphant return to theaters after finding so much success in the direct-to-dvd market. While that doesn't seem to be happening just yet, we've got one better for you: According to Moviehole, Tara Reid will reprise her role as Vicki Lathum in the next bargain-bin sequel, currently titled American Pie: Skank Patrol! I kid, of course, they're calling this installment American Pie: Book of Love, and it apparently follows a group of kids who discover the so-called "sex-bible" from the original film in their school library and set out on a quest to lose their virginity. Reid appeared as Vicki in the first two American Pie films, and will join Eugene Levy as the only other original cast member still munchin' on that tasty pie.

A third sequel to the successful American Pie franchise is reportedly in development. American Pie 4 will likely focus on the characters of Jim and Michelle following on from their wedding, according to Moviehole. The original American Pie was released in 1999 and grossed around $$235 million (£162.4 million) worldwide. It was followed by American Pie 2 and American Wedding, which each grossed over $$200 million (£138.1 million) at the box office. A trio of straight-to-dvd spinoffs (more) »
