Predictions 2010 Sundance Film Festival: Holofcener, Dosunmu, Cam Archer

In John Cooper's first year as head honcho, we'll get to see a new sidebar going by the name of "Next". Media Theatre's Wizard Of Oz Plays Through 1/10/2010

25 November 2009 3:50 PM, PST | BroadwayWorld.com | See recent BroadwayWorld.com news »

"The Wizard of Oz", L. Frank Baum's family friendly fantasy in which a young Dorothy travels over the rainbow after a twister hits her Uncle's farm, is one of the most popular stories of all time due to the iconic film version. While the film celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, the stage version of the musical based on the movie claims The Media Theatre stage as its home this holiday season (Nov. 24, 2009-Jan. 10, 2010).

The Media Theatre will produce The Royal Shakespeare Company's version of the musical, which includes all of the well-known songs from the film ("Over the Rainbow", "If I Only Had A Brain", "Follow The Yellow Brick Road") and a number cut from the original movie ("Jitterbug"). Temple University's Peter Reynolds, who directed Media's popular "Altar Boyz" last season, will take the helm for "Oz".

Decade in Review: 2001 Top Ten

17 November 2009 8:41 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

What follows is my original top ten list of 2001. We'll discuss each year of the decade over the next month or two (we already did 2000). I do this because I am curious about which films "stick" and which fade and why and maybe you are too? Best year of the decade I think. The top five films would all be valid #1 film choices in some years. New comments are in red.

Note: This list references films released in NYC in 2001, not year of production or year in which they first the hit festival circuit or whatnot.

Runners Up (in descending order): Sexy Beast, Ali, Series 7: The Contenders, The Others, Last Resort and Waking Life. I don't remember loving Ali that much... and more than The Others? I don't remember that at all. I mean Nicole Kidman was the shit Twice Over in 2001.

Will Levi Bring Porn Award to Palin Thanksgiving?

12 November 2009 6:51 PM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Should we now call him the award-winning Levi Johnston? The Alaskan teen formerly known as Sarah Palin's future son-in-law was in New York City last night to pick up porn website Fleshbot's Crossover Star award. In other words, he got props for having the cojones to strip down for Playgirl… "He was a little overwhelmed, but he handled it like a champ," Fleshbot editor Lux Alptraum tells us. "The crowd was thrilled to have him there. Everyone was supportive and excited." So much so that someone yelled out, "We love you, Levi," when he was presented with his shiny phallic trophy by New York drag entertainer Justin Bond and Hedwig and the Angry Inch director »

11 November 2009 3:00 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

The producers behind great queer-themed films like Boys Don't Cry and Hedwig and the Angry Inch are working with lesbian comic artist Ariel Schrag on the movie adaptation of her book, Potential. Killer Films (which is home to out producer Christine Vachon) are working with Ariel (who also used to write for The L Word) to create the film version of the 2000 comic/graphic novel, which chronicled her life as an out lesbian in the eleventh grade.

Queer writer and Sister Spit creator Michelle Tea posted an interview with Ariel on the Sfmoma blog today, giving us some insight into what's going on with the production of Potential. Ariel told Tea, "It’s moving along! We just got a great new producer, Jamin O’Brien. Rose Troche is directing and she’s amazing. I love working with her. We’re hoping to shoot this spring."

Entertainment Weekly Lists the 25 Best Soundtracks from the Past 25 Years

3 November 2009 2:34 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I’m no music expert what with their fancy degrees and ability to appreciate music beyond “This sounds good.”  But I do know lists and lists generate controversy and controversy equals traffic!  And with their patented “slideshow” format which creates more hits based on an itemized story, EW.com has a real racket going!

Well, we just listed it like normal people after the jump.  Take a look, see if you agree, and scream your disbelief at how a certain album you love wasn’t included.  Also, remember that this is a list of soundtracks which are usually a collection of songs used in a movie as opposed to a score which is usually the instrumental accompaniment to the film created by a single composer (although there are obviously scores created by more than one composer).

If you want to click through the list like a chump, click here. It »

Project Runway @ the Movies: "Lights, Camera, Sew"

27 September 2009 6:37 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

I've always wanted Project Runway, which wields the word "costumey" around in the same dread way that American Idol invokes "broadway", to embrace costume design and hold a movie themed episode. Now that they're located in La, they finally came through for me.

The designers at a real soundstage, hearing the challenge. For the record I'm:

rooting for CarolHannah, drooling on Logan and expecting a Christopher win.

If you've seen the show, you'll know that Heidi Klum always kicks things off by wrapping that brilliant accent around a happy preview of the episode's content. To hear her chirpily declare "movie making!" before the Add editing team cut to the challenge was bliss in 4 syllables. Unfortunately many of the costumes weren't bliss in 4 seconds.

The contestants had to fight over the following five genres (only two people to a genre)

Film NoirPeriod PieceWestern (nobody wanted it!)

The 50 Best Gay Movies (2009)

13 September 2009 5:40 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Why aren’t there more good gay movies? We hear this complaint at AfterElton.com a lot, and we’ve even made it a few times ourselves (although we think the results of this poll prove that there are more good movies than many of us think!).

There are surely many reasons why more “mainstream” movies don’t include gay or bisexual themes, but no doubt one of them is heterosexual discomfort – not just discomfort on the part of audiences and network executives, but also discomfort on the part of critics and others to champion these films.

This is where our poll of AfterElton.com readers on the 50 Greatest Gay Movies comes in. We can think of no better way to encourage the creation of more good gay movies than to praise and support the existence of past good gay movies!

How does this list compare to our previous poll? »

Sook-Yin Lee marks her directorial debut!

Sook-Yin Lee is often regarded as a bold actor and broadcaster. In 2001, for instance, she mooned TV cameras on one of her last days as a VJ at MuchMusic. And in the 2006 big-screen drama Shortbus, she performs non-simulated intercourse as the lead character, a sex-therapist.Which is why it's surprising that Lee is timid about the world premiere of Year of the Carnivore . she wrote and directed the feature . at the Toronto International Film Festival."I've been so scared!" the Vancouver native, host of CBC Radio's pop-culture show "Definitely Not the Opera," said in a recent interview."I love this movie, and you set it out into the world and you don't know if it'll get brutalized . or worse, ignored."So I've just been like: 'Oh my God, why do I make things? The NY Times (via The Playlist) has the first two photos from John Cameron Mitchell's Rabbit Hole, an adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire's Pulitzer prize-winning stage play about a suburban mother dealing with the loss of a child. The project was first announced back in April and is a small $10 million indie shot in New York that stars Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart, directed by the same guy who made Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus. "When I first responded to it, it was because I read it, and it was about grief, which fascinates me," Kidman said. "Loss and love seem to be themes that run through my work." There are lots of fascinating tidbits in the NY Times piece - such as that Aaron Eckhart was hand-picked by Kidman. "The reason why I'm in the movie is Nicole.
