MGM Sounds a Death Rattle; Auctions Imminent

12 November 2009 5:50 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Not long ago, we told you about MGM’s impending financial crisis which threatened the life of the company, as well as the franchises that MGM holds. It seems that the situation has only gotten more dire for the studio: Variety is reporting that they will essentially be auctioning off all of their assets within the next several weeks.

This could mean a variety of things for the 85 year old studio. One studio may grab the rights to their name and lion roar, while another may purchase some or all of the 4,000 titles in their catalog. It’s very likely, though, that we’ll see one of the big dogs like Time Warner grab much of what is at stake.

According to Variety, “some specialists in film libraries consider its list of titles to be geriatric.” This seems to be hogwash; there is plenty of value and enticing properties within MGM. »

Michael Madsen is our nominee for Hardest-Working Man in Show Business

11 November 2009 5:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Michael Madsen calls movies "pictures" and makes a new one every couple weeks. I happened to check his IMDb page recently, and I noticed something incredible: the man acted in 25 movies released this year. 25*! Sure, they all have dubious titles like You Might As Well Live, Lost in the Woods, and Road of No Return. Sure, Madsen mostly plays characters with names like "The Reverend," "The Associate," and "Clinton Manitoba." But the sheer quantity of Madsen-imprinted cinema in 2009 deserves a special kind of acclaim. Madsen is philosophical about his workaholic output. "I'm only good when I'm busy. When I've got nothing to do, »

Mamma Mia star Dominic Cooper slated for Saddam Hussein thriller

10 November 2009 12:09 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia) is set to star in the upcoming action-thriller true story The Devil’s Double for Paradigm Motion Picture Finance Group .

Cooper will play Latif Yahia, “a dead ringer for Saddam Hussein’s sadistic and widely despised son Uday who was forced against his will to stand in for Uday in potentially dangerous situations.”  Through his access, Yahia gained access to Hussein’s inner sanctum and witnessed terrible corruption, violence and nuttiness.

Ludivine Sagnier is also in talks to star in the project which begins shooting in January in scenic Malta.

Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day) will direct from a script that Michael Thomas adapted.

Last month, while promoting his latest film, An Education, in the U.K., Cooper talked about the rumored prequel to Mamma Mia. “Unfortunately you say sequel, I’ve heard a terrible similar word beginning with a ‘p’, which absolutely outs my existence in it whatsoever, »

Cooper Eyes Sadistic Thriller Playing 'The Devil's Double'

10 November 2009 1:22 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

If there's one thing I particularly dug about An Education it was Dominic Cooper's smug, suave and mildly compassionate character. I mildly remembered him from The Duchess, but beyond that his roles in The History Boys and even Mamma Mia! are lost on me. Perhaps they were small and forgettable or just plain forgettable, but he was one cool cat in An Education and it's nice to see him scoring some additional work even if it is for Lee Tamahori, the director of the disappointing Bond film Die Another Day and xXx: State of the Union.

The film is The Devil's Double and is described by Screen Daily as a taut action tale about the extraordinary life of Latif Yahia. Cooper will play Yahia, a dead ringer for Saddam Hussein's sadistic and widely despised son, was forced against his will to stand in for Uday in potentially dangerous situations. »

Birthday Suits: Tilda's Frontal & Sam's Moon

5 November 2009 9:30 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

I was going to try out this new quickie daily birthday feature. Only it's not quickie it's longie. I can't even do filler without breaking my back. Sigh, I'll never be a mega famous blogger. I care too much!

Today's birthdays 11/05

For those prone to celebrating the filmic and famous.

1905 Joel McCrea undervalued 40s star. Read this great piece on his career

1913 Vivien Leigh, more on her soon

1931 Ike Turner didn't deserve Tina. But, ugh, remember how great Laurence Fishburne was in What's Love Got To Do Without It?

1940 Elke Sommer, the German movie star turns 69 years young today. She was very generous with her birthday suit back in the 60s. Wouldn't you be if you looked like that? On a sad note I have never seen the infamous movie The Oscar (1966) which is about the Oscars that she co-stars in. Is it as bad as they say? I must see it. »

Bond 23 To Start Filming In Late 2010

26 October 2009 1:41 PM, PDT | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

According to MI6, Bond 23 will begin production in late 2010. Daniel Craig told fans outside the Broadway theatre for his play “A Steady Rain” that production will kick off at the “end of next year.

It will be the third 007 installment starring Craig. His previous two films, “Casino Royale” and “Quantum of Solace,” earned $594 million and $586 million, respectively, at the worldwide box office.

The next installment in the James Bond franchise is being written by returning scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day, Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace), and “The Queen”, “The Last King of Scotland”, and “Frost/Nixon” scribe Peter Morgan. David Arnold will compose the score for his sixth 007 movie. Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have yet to confirm a director.

That news follows the general schedule of Bond movie production which commences 10-12 months before release, indicating a November 2011 opening. »

Bond Back in Action at End of 2010

23 October 2009 7:20 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Well, it may not have been the most in-depth update, but being the star of the film I think we can trust what Daniel Craig tells us.

Craig is currently starring in the Broadway production of A Steady Rain with fellow Hollywood star Hugh Jackman. After a recent performance, Craig was graciously signing autographs for fans waiting outside the stage door exit when he was asked the question we’re all curious about: When do we get to see 007 back in action?

In a brief yet direct response, Craig informed the fan that they’re going to begin filming James Bond 23 at the end of next year.

It’s not much to go on, but considering that MGM’s financial issues presented the possibility of bankruptcy, it’s reassuring to hear from Mr. Bond himself that the movie is still taking place.

Rosamund Pike thinks that everyone is scared of her

20 October 2009 1:22 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Rosamund Pike thinks people became scared of her after 'Die Another Day'.

The British actress - who played villainess Miranda Frost in the 2002 James Bond film - believes people are frightened of her since she played the confident and sexy MI6 double agent in the spy film franchise.

She said: "Being a Bond girl was scary, wonderful and life-changing. I felt completely out of my depth doing 'Die Another Day'. I was quaking in my boots on that set. Looking back, I'm incredibly proud to have been a Bond girl. But I think it made other people scared of me."

The 30-year-old beauty understands the role made her appear "unpleasant" but she is keen to reassure people she is nothing like the "supremely confident" character in real life.

She explained to Britain's Mail on Sunday: "Unwittingly I created this image for myself of someone who was supremely confident and completely unapproachable, »

Pike Charmed Her Way Out Of Driving Ticket

19 October 2009 12:01 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Rosamund Pike once used her feminine charm on a police officer to avoid a ticket for a driving offence.

The Die Another Day star was travelling from Tennessee to Mississippi along a secluded road when she was caught dodging a stop sign by cops.

She was pulled over - but she managed to get out of a penalty ticket.

Pike says, "In 2006 I decided to fly into Memphis and drive down to Mississippi. I was driving down Highway 1, the only car for miles, thinking, 'Another car could pull up alongside me now and I'd be defenceless.' Then a car did pull up.

"It was the police. I'd run through a stop sign. In the South a woman can get away by playing the little girl lost routine, and he waved me on my way." »

Pike Happy To Date Fans

Actress Rosamund Pike once went on a date with a fan after she was sent a letter inviting her for a meal.

The Die Another Day star receives numerous offers by post from admirers and she's encouraging men to send her more propositions - because she'd be happy to meet up with a fan again.

She says, "I attract my fair share of oddballs. I do get men writing asking me out for dinner. One time I accepted the invitation. It was a successful date but there was no kissing involved. I'd do it again. If someone writes me a really cracking letter, why shouldn't I meet up with them?" »

MGM Gets a Reprieve, The Hobbit and James Bond Safe

5 October 2009 7:38 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

A week or so ago we reported on the financial crisis facing Metro Goldwyn Mayer that threatened to knock Guillermo Del Toro’s The Hobbit off its axis. It looked like a tricky doomsday scenario for the studio, but we’re happy to report that MGM is safe, for now.

According to a brief Variety report, the studio has been allowed to skip three interest payments that are due on their $3.7 billion worth of debt.

According to an official statement from MGM:

“Under the terms of the agreement, MGM’s lender group has agreed not to enforce its rights or remedies arising as a result of the company’s request to not currently pay interest due on Sept. 30, Oct. 31 and Nov. 30, 2009.”

This is fairly good news as it gives MGM until the end of the year to get their ducks in a row — currently, all MGM productions are moving forward, »

MGM in Peril — Will James Bond Live to Die Another Day?

25 September 2009 8:03 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Yesterday, a large conference call took place between MGM executives and bondholders in which the former “made a desperate plea for money because the studio had missed its numbers and was going to be out of funds very soon.”

That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, MGM may be on the verge of bankruptcy — at least, that’s what an initial glance at this plea seems to indicate. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, producer and distributor behind The Hobbit, the James Bond film franchise and the upcoming Fame and The Cabin in the Woods (along with a large catalog of classics), is said by a source to need “an additional $150 million to get through the end of year and continue funding its projects, and to start Peter Jackson’s Hobbit.”

The only semi-productive avenue for the bondholders seemed to be allowing MGM to slip into bankruptcy and collecting their funds, which would essentially (amongst other »

Berry diving into Dark Tide

9 September 2009 12:02 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Halle Berry could be making the thriller Dark Tide before the end of the year. The Die Another Day actress is in talks to headline the movie for director Clark Johnson (S.W.A.T., NBC's Kings) and producers Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Martin Shore and Christopher Tuffin.

The movie centers on a diving instructor who once had a deadly encounter with a great white shark. She tries to overcome her fear of returning underwater. The picture is budgeted at between $15 million to $20 million and will film in South Africa.

Berry's last film was 2007's Things We Lost in the Fire. She's taken the time off to become a mother and just returned to making movies this year. Frankie and Alice, a drama in which she stars with Stellan Skarsgard, is in the can but doesn't as yet have a release date. However, recent unconfirmed gossip heard in the past week states that »

Robin Hood tucks back into BBC America with third season

28 August 2009 6:42 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

The third and final (and darker) season of Robin Hood is set to hit BBC America Saturday, Sept 12 at 9pm E.T./P.T.

The original BBC production kept the classic character in the correct period and location, but it "Buffy'd" the show up a little with younger actors and occasional soapy plot elements intermixed with the required (and satisfying) action.

Series regulars Jonas Armstrong, Richard Armitage and Keith Allen remain and are joined by Toby Stephens (Die Another Day) and David Harewood.

The show gets a little darker in its final run. That's not surprising as Robin Hood legend's usually end with the hero sacrificing himself and picking his burial spot with a final random arrow shot.Continue reading Robin Hood tucks back into BBC America with third season

Come Join the Party!

17 August 2009 5:47 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Hello, Jose here to remind you all that it's Madonna's birthday!

The Queen of pop/ businesswoman/ kabbalist/ mother/ 90's tabloid fodder/ safe sex advocate/ sex advocate/ entrepeneur/ icon is celebrating her 51st birthday today (and with those arms!). But along with everything she's done, many people forget (on purpose mostly...) that she's also an actress/director. The notorious perfectionist has never been able to master the cinematic arts, even if she tries and tries and tries. But since it's her birthday we should acknowledge that not all she's done for the silver screen is bad and since we can't take a holiday to get into the groove with her, here's...

51 Reasons to Celebrate Madonna... in the Movies!

51. Daring to take on a role created by Katharine Hepburn...sort of in Who's That Girl.

50. Her endorsement of Michael Moore.

49. Setting a whole new clothing trend with Desperately Seeking Susan.

48. Her deep love for classic films. »

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Review

10 August 2009 12:16 AM, PDT | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra is a lad’s fantasy, the high-tech, big budget cinematic equivalent of blowing up G.I. Joe dolls with M-80s in the backyard. And perhaps that’s as it should be. Since Paramount declined to screen the movie for the press ahead of time, like most critics I paid for a ticket and saw G.I. Joe with its intended audience — a bunch of guys between 20 and 35, with nothing better to do on a Friday afternoon than watch stuff go kaboom. From their enthusiastic response, I’d say that they got exactly what they paid for, and more.

‘Robin Hood’ Returns for Third Season on BBC America

5 August 2009 2:30 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Just in case you’re not aware, BBC America has other shows besides Doctor Who and Torchwood. Although those two are great, another drama is making some waves across the pond as well and that drama is Robin Hood. Its a fun program with lots of action, solid performances, interesting characters and humor which make it a great way to spend your time — especially if you’re looking for a break from a contemporary setting, sci-fi, time travel or monsters.

Apparently, I’m not the only Robin Hood fan out there because its been given a third season on the network. Here’s all the info from the official press release.

BBC Amerca’s hit revival of Robin Hood returns for a bigger, bolder third season of action-adventure. Toby Stephens (Die Another Day, Jane Eyre) and David Harewood (The Vice, The Palace) join the cast of Jonas Armstrong (Teachers, The Ghost Squad), Richard Armitage (Mi-5, »
