Truly pathetic shot-on-video cheapie that looks like either a Showtime special mimicking HBO's TALES FROM THE CRYPT -- or someone's home movie. It was shot in somebody's backyard, that's for sure. Reminded me a little of LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, which was shot in pretty much the same wooded lot in New Jersey or Connecticut. The opening alone, with a talking, flaming skull yattering on for five or 10 minutes, will be enough to turn most viewers off. The tape contains three tales of terror that are barely tales and contain little or no terror. The final episode is the best, about a killer stalking teens in an old house, and has a couple of scary moments. The middle episode, about a trio of trailer trash types getting theirs after stalking and killing an old Indian, has some of the worst special effects you will ever see. And the first episode, about a bunch of high school jocks taking on a Sling Blade-type school janitor, obviously was shot on a negative budget. David Johansen is the storyteller, and he is simply pathetic as a Mayberry RFD-type forest ranger in a really big round hat. The gal from THE SOPRANOS is in the first episode and the wraparound, but is given little to do. You would never guess she was a professional actress from this New Jersey-lensed disaster. Whatever money they had, the filmmakers obviously channeled it into the video box cover art.
