- During training Gregory Smith, the youngest of the cast, became so good with a gun the wranglers nicknamed him "Secret Weapon".
- Colin Farrell did as many of his own stunts as Les Mayfield would let him do.
- Colin Farrell and the other cast members had to spend six weeks at a ranch, hanging out with cowboys and learning how to ride horses before filming began. Farrell rode a horse named Milagro while learning how to ride, and used that horse while shooting the film.
- Out of 65 days of shooting, 45 were in temperatures of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
- In the credits it is mentioned the use of footage from the movie Maverick (1994). It is the short scene of the paddle wheel steamer when Jesse and Zee are getting to Florida.
- In the movie, Jim Younger is portrayed as being younger in age than Bob Younger. In reality, it was the reverse.

- SPOILER: Jim Younger actually outlived Jesse James, after spending time in prison with his brothers Cole and Bob after the failure of the Northfield Raid.
- SPOILER: In the film, Frank and Jesse's mother is killed by an explosion when the agents raided the James homestead. While the explosion did take place, their mother lived but had her arm blown off and a younger half-brother (omitted from the story) was killed.
