'Fantastic Mr. Fox' Lives Up to its Name

21 November 2009 9:05 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Like Coraline, Spirited Away, and Where the Wild Things Are before it, Fantastic Mr. Fox is a children's film that doesn't treat its pint-sized audience with kid gloves. Though Wes Anderson's previous directorial outings have had their fair share of man-children, this is the first film that the hipster favorite  has created with kids in mind. However, this smart adaptation of a Roald Dahl classic never talks down to its viewers, and its fun, feisty adventure proves to be Anderson's best work since The Royal Tenenbaums.

Mr. Fox (voiced by George Clooney) has ambition. He gave up the life of a bird thief 12 fox years ago (that's two years, to you and me), and he now spends his days as a corduroy-suit-clad newspaperman. He, Mrs. Fox (Meryl Streep), and their rebellious son, Ash (Jason Schwartzman), have finally moved up in the world: instead of calling a hole their home, »

Pitt turns down $$5m for children

20 November 2009 1:23 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Brad Pitt has reportedly refused the offer of a $$5 million (£3 million) paycheck in order to spend quality time with his children. The Ocean's Eleven star, who has three biological children and three adopted children with partner Angelina Jolie, was due to attend the Grand Prix Ball in Abu Dhabi last month but apparently chose to go trick-or-treating with his family instead. Pitt Rules Out Directing Career

18 November 2009 12:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Brad Pitt has ruled out a career in directing - because he's convinced his obsessive attention to detail would drive him mad.

The Ocean's Eleven star has enjoyed an acting career spanning two decades and is convinced he will always stay in front of the camera.

He tells Britain's Ok! magazine, "To be a director you have to be a real perfectionist. I would get mad. I'd rather build houses. It's very similar to directing, actually, because you're inside this piece of art, you're surrounded by it." »

Jon Turteltaub Giving Greenpeace The National Treasure Treatment

13 November 2009 7:20 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

He found a treasure map on the back of the Declaration of Independence and made us all believe John Travolta had special powers, and now Jon Turteltaub is going to make something out of those hippies who run around on boats trying to save whales. That's right: he's giving Greenpeace the National Treasure treatment. According to Variety, the film will be set in the late 70s and early 80s, when the organization was just getting started thanks to charismatic founding members Bob Hunter and Rex Weyler. It sounds like the take will be something along the lines of an ecological Ocean's Eleven, with a ragtag group teaming up to stop things like infant harp seal hunting and nuclear bomb tests. Greenpeace will be cooperating on the project, which means we probably won't be seeing too many dirty hippie jokes or comments about exactly how relevant Greenpeace is these days. But »

Shawn Ryan Reminisces on The Shield

2 November 2009 7:54 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The creator of the landmark cable series talks about the new Complete Series DVD set, Terriers and more.

Back in 2002, a series aired that changed the face of television and became my favorite TV series of all time - Hands Down - The Shield. For seven seasons I was absolutely riveted by the exploits of the Strike Team in the fictional Los Angeles district of Farmington, and that of their leader Vic Mackey, played to utmost perfection by Michael Chiklis. Sadly, the TV series came to an end last fall, with a series finale that is, in my opinion, the single best series finale in TV history ( to read my farewell piece to this amazing series) and now viewers can relive the TV magic with The Shield: The Complete Series, which hits the shelves in a massive 28-disc set on November 3. I was fortunate enough to have an exclusive »

Paparazzi faulted for Hollywood break-ins (poor fashion sense clearly also to blame)

27 October 2009 1:02 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

We don't want to make light of teens being arrested for allegedly breaking into the homes of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan — even if this La Times summary of events is begging for it: "According to Los Angeles police detectives, the group studied television shows, celebrity magazines and websites picking out clothing and jewelry they wanted." (Hilton and Lohan would not be on our "wanted" list. Rachel Bilson, whose home was also broken into? Okay, slightly more aspirational.) Naturally, an attorney who represents some of the celebrity victims has blamed the paparazzi for photographing stars' homes and magazines for covering their whereabouts, »

Clooney's new show plays the Blues on TNT

27 October 2009 12:59 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

TNT has ordered a pilot for a series called Delta Blues that is executive produced by George Clooney. The show comes from Smokehouse Pictures, the production company that the actor and his business partner Grant Heslov own.

As written by Liz Garcia and Josh Harto, the pilot is about a Memphis police officer who also has a night job as an Elvis Presley impersonator. That's not the shameful part; he also lives with his mother. Oh noes!

This isn't the first TV producing venture for Clooney. Prior to founding Smokehouse he was involved with Ocean's Eleven director Steven Soderberg on the HBO series Unscripted and K Street. Both series had short 10-episode single season runs before being axed. »

Depp, Leo, Clooney All Potential Frank Sinatras

27 October 2009 5:04 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Several months ago, it was announced that Universal would make a Frank Sinatra bio-pic. The problem is that director Martin Scorsese apparently wants one actor to play Ol' Blue Eyes, the studio wants someone else, and Sinatra's daughter Tina wants a different leading man altogether. Something's gotta give.

According to The Guardian, Scorsese would like Leonardo DiCaprio, which is no surprise, Universal reportedly wants Johnny Depp, and that's no shock, while Sinatra thinks George Clooney is the way to go. That one is a bit of stretch, although he'd make a great Dean Martin.

Now, the Clooney thing could be related to Ocean's 11 and all that, but Tina Sinatra, an executive producer on the project, wants Clooney because "she wants the movie to focus on music and not the violence, sex, and drinking." »

What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #14

25 October 2009 3:17 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I saw quite a bit this week, but some of it I have already detailed such as my reviews for Trucker and Tormented. I also watched the Blu-ray for Love, Actually (a personal favorite and a review is forth-coming) as well as the following three films.

The second two (The Sniper and 5 Against the House) are both from the November 3 release from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Film Noir Collection Volume One. You can get more details on the complete set right here and I hope to discuss the other three films (The Big Heat, The Lineup and Murder by Contract) next Sunday or perhaps in a complete review.

As always, remember you can keep tabs on my personal Netflix queue right here. I now have 50 friends on the movie rental site and would love to have a few more if those of you out there with accounts are interested. Now, »

Can Hulu Save Traditional TV?

19 October 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

Can Jason Kilar and his hit site Hulu save traditional TV from itself while remaking it for the future?

Even for Hollywood, where long odds and high stakes are staples of storytelling, the plotline is a doozy: A couple of old business rivals facing the threat of a lifetime agree to put aside their differences and join forces on a half-baked experiment that makes them laughingstocks. (We're thinking Jack Nicholson and Warren Beatty.) And who do they put in charge? A young guy, a newbie to the biz. He promptly cleans house and hires an even younger guy who's halfway around the globe. These renegades throw out the rule book -- and they pull it off. Their idea kills. The naysayers feast on crow.

This pitch meeting would not end well. Cue Ari Gold: Nobody'll believe it, not in a million years. Are you nuts? Get the %*#$ out of my office! »

question of the day: Does the casting of Adrien Brody and Topher Grace as action heroes signal a shift in action movies?

15 October 2009 5:03 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

So, the news came this week that Adrien Brody and Topher Grace would be headlining the upcoming Predator reboot from director Nimród Antal. Say what? Now, sure, Brody is majorly cool -- seriously, did you see The Brothers Bloom? Omg, you must -- and Grace was a hoot in that one bit in Ocean's Eleven -- but... really? Really? Antal made the awesome Kontroll a few years back, so that inspires a bit of hope, and, as Cinematical’s Elisabeth Rappe explains, Brody and Grace are sure to bring a certain je ne sais quoi to the flick: »

Clooney Engagement Reports 'Untrue'

Ocean's Eleven star George Clooney has brushed off reports he's engaged to his new girlfriend.

The movie hunk began dating Italian actress and TV personality Elisabetta Canalis this summer and was so instantly smitten, he moved her into his Studio City home in California.

New reports have suggested the actor recently proposed to the brunette beauty, before inviting her to live with him in his Lake Como home in Italy.

But Clooney insists he has no plans to wed just yet, with his representative telling GossipCop.com the rumours are "not true". »

Get Ready for "Liberace" the Movie! Matt Damon and Michael Douglas to Kiss?

The life story of Wladziu Valentino Liberace has always been intriguing and very filmic. Flashy, flamboyant, and yes, closeted, Liberace regaled everyone and became one of the most interesting pop culture icons.

Now, I'm hearing that Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh is getting ready to make a film about the master showman with Matt Damon and Michael Douglas attached to the project!

Douglas will play Liberace while Damon will star as his partner/companion, Scott Thorson. Soderbergh tells MTV news, "Everybody is hopeful that there will be a full-on, love-wrestling match between these guys...That's not where my mind went, but we have a hot-tub scene in there."

Damon told MTV that he and Douglas were getting ready for some kissing scenes. "I saw Michael last night...he looks at me and goes, 'Get your Chapstick ready!' "

Salacious :happy

Soderbergh revealed that his film version will be told from the perspective of Thorson. »

Top Ten Working American Directors

Top Ten Working American Directors

A list like this is tricky to the point of madness. However, I'm going to save you the trouble by saying it right here, right now: Most of the choices on this list are obvious. There's a reason why certain names continually pop up whenever conversation drifts toward great American films. So there. I said it.

Yet, how do you weigh the likes of Francis Ford Coppola, a genius who delivered some of the all-time greatest films, but fizzled out 25 or so years ago, against a filmmaker like Woody Allen who has worked consistently for decades churning out both brilliant gems and disposable time wasters? How do you compare either of these directors against an auteur such as Spike Jonze who has only opened two films so far, but both are masterpieces?

In the end I just went with my gut. I knew there were »

Discuss: What's Your Favorite Remake?

2 October 2009 10:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

We often bash the neverending flurry of remakes, and frankly, it's hard not to. Nestled in between the possible gems are many projects that wrench the magic out of the original they're supposed to love. But luckily (especially in this remake-laden movie world) they're not all bad. In fact, sometimes they can be downright delightful, thought-provoking, or even awe-inspiring.

One of the top contenders, of course, is The Fly. The 1958 version was wildly popular and loved, yet David Cronenberg was able to sweep in and concoct a film that people rave about to this day. It remains one of the only movies able to rip through my adoration of the original and find a secure spot on the appreciation shelf. Beyond that, there are further remake chills with memorable projects like Dawn of the Dead and Cape Fear, plus a bunch of more mainstream-friendly, and beloved, remakes. Ocean's 11, anyone? »

Blu-ray Capsule Review: Varsity Blues

28 September 2009 11:40 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Varsity Blues Quick Thoughts: I was 22-years-old when Varsity Blues came out and while it's about high school students, the fact the majority of the actors are older or only slightly younger than myself it pretty much fit right into my early-twenties wheelhouse. Partying, playing sports and hot blondes in whipped cream bikinis (wait... what?). I mean, what isn't there for a 22-year-old not to love? Of course, the film is downright cheesy -- "I don't want... your life" -- and if you are going to attempt to take it seriously you have seriously taken a misstep. However, that isn't to say this film is an entire farce. High school football in Texas is a big deal and while I have no idea if they take it as far as Jon Voight's Coach Bud Kilmer takes it, I would be surprised if the majority of goings on in this »
