Truly if it weren't for the great scenes of The Roots making music I wouldn't recommend it. It's not that I totally disliked watching this it's just that I got the feeling that I've seen it all before, and done better. Basically I felt like I was watching Do The Right Thing (a film that I consider Spike Lee's best of the Spike Lee films I've seen) done over again and probably some Jungle Fever mixed in (although I haven't seen that film). The problem with it is that the tone is somber and I didn't get the feeling of tension building as I did while watching Do The Right Thing I just simply knew because the director basically told me that is what I should be feeling. At times it felt overlong but as a whole the film felt really cut down. There was rather bad character developement as the bulk of the film follows Solomon so I didn't really get a chance to get inside the Jewish girl's head. Another factor giving to this feeling of incompleteness was the abrupt ending that only seemed to say that although violence is not the proper way to solve things it will indeed solve things. It gave way to a mixed up sense of morals and left me asking "What happened to..." (fill in almost everybody appearing in the movie). However it is not all a lost cause. Great performances by all were given and as stated above great scenes with The Roots and a nice soundtrack are included. Also appreciated were the parallels to Biblical stories that the film's story followed. It proves that director Marc Levin has his mind set in the right place. Maybe in the future his story telling skills will sharpen.
