Salt Script Review

When Kurt Wimmer’s (Equilibrium) script for Salt was originally picked up by Columbia Pictures, Tom Cruise was attached for the lead.  However, scheduling conflicts or it’s resemblance to Mission: Impossible caused him to take a walk, leaving the role wide open for Angelina Jolie.

A few gender tweaks were all they needed to turn this Cold War thriller into an action vehicle for a strong woman.  Having read the script, audiences are in for one hell of an awesome flick in July 2010.

The trailer indicates there have been some changes since Wimmer’s draft, which received rewrites by Brian Helgeland (Oscar winning screenwriter of Mystic River).  For example, a key assassination attempt is shown as an explosion rather than the sniper operation described in the script’s quickly-turning pages.  But it’s clear from the trailer that one thing remains as the core element in the film: this »

The power of Michael Jackson lives on - and it's proving enough to conquer the mystical might of the Lord of the Rings.

The late singer's upcoming concert movie Michael Jackson's This Is It has overtaken Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - the first film in Peter Jackson's trilogy - in a league table of films with the highest advance ticket sales of all time.

MovieTickets.com said This Is It had knocked The Fellowship of the Ring of the 25th place in the chart.

The Jacko film documents the star's preparations for his planned 50-date concert series and will be released on October 28. Sony Pictures edited hundreds of hours of rehearsal footage to create the movie after paying $60million for the film rights.

A Michael Jackson single and album with the same title are also set to be released.

Warner Bros. creates DC Entertainment: Studio moves to develop more superhero movies before people get completely sick of them

The big changes to the entertainment landscpe continue. Previously, we brought you news that Disney was buying Marvel and now, its a new week and a brand new deal. This time around, news is out that Warner Bros. has decided that DC Comics needs its own shingle and so has decided to give it one, in the brand new form of DC Entertainment.

According to Warner Bros., the newly formed company will “fully realize the power and value of the DC Comics brand and characters across all media and platforms.” It will be run by Diane Nelson, former head of the Warner Premiere division of the company. Obviously, she’s pretty excited about her new job.

“The founding of DC Entertainment fully recognizes our desire to provide both the DC properties and fans the type of content that is only possible through a concerted cross-company, multi-platform effort,” said Nelson.

A brand new division of Warner Bros. Entertainment got announced today that should bring more of a spotlight to DC Comics' pantheon of superheroes and comic book properties. Called DC Entertainment, the wholly independent company will facilitate the useage of DC Comics characters across all Warner Bros. platforms including film, television, video games and other media. The division will be run by Diane Nelson, the WB exec who has shepherded the studio's Harry Potter franchise for the past 9 years.

Warner Bros Gobbles Up DC; Levitz Out

In a not-unexpected move, Warner Bros. has taken complete control of DC Comics, renaming the company DC Entertainment and promising to integrate the publishing house's work into its existing divisions. 

President and publisher Paul Levitz, an employee of the company for nearly four decades, is relinquishing those roles and will go back to writing comic books for the company. He will also be serving as both an editorial consultant and as a transition consultant for the new operation.

Rumors, of course, run rampant, the most persistent being DC's possible move to Los Angeles. Levitz has had an "I don't have to move west" clause in his employment contract, which adds fuel to this fire.

Unlike the Disney / Marvel situation, Warner Bros. is clearly moving DC's various operations into its mainstream, so it is logical to expect that a great many changes lie ahead. When Disney announced its purchase of Marvel, »

The Hangover is Highest-Grossing R-Rated Comedy Ever

"The Hangover" has now surpassed "Beverly Hills Cop" to become the highest-grossing R-rated comedy (domestically). Eddie Murphy's "Beverly Hills Cop" had the record for almost 25 years with $234.8 million, but "Hangover" has now made $235.7 million. "The Hangover" is now also the third highest-grossing R-rated film of all-time, only behind "The Matrix Reloaded" ($281.6 million) and "Passion of the Christ" ($370.8 million). ‘Half-Blood Prince’ and ‘Hangover’ Set Box Office Records

When I wrote the box office report on Sunday, there were only U.S. estimates available.  After the final numbers were released Monday, two Warner Bros movies had officially set new records.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince may have missed the top five domestic 5-day grosses, but the sixth wizard adventure conjured $396.7 million worldwide in just five days around the globe.  The figure is the largest 5-day worldwide total ever, passing Spider-Man 3’s $381.7 million in 2007.  Potter has pulled $158M so far in the States and another $237M from 84 international markets.  It set the record for biggest Wednesday opening in the U.K.

Half-Blood Prince also posted record international IMAX numbers for the 5-day ($3.6M), even though its U.S. debut for “The Experience” has been delayed two weeks.

Meanwhile, The Hangover crossed $235 million domestic to become the most successful R-rated comedy of all-time.  The Todd Phillips-directed movie finally passed Beverly Hills Cop, »

'The Hangover' Is the Biggest R-Rated Comedy Ever

If you saw The Hangover this weekend, congratulate yourself! Not only did you finally learn why everyone in America has been laughing when they think of babies being injured, you also helped contribute to the film's new status as the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time, with a total of $235.9 million (and still going strong).

What's especially impressive is that the previous record-holder had held the top spot for almost 25 years: It was Beverly Hills Cop. That film made $234,760,478 back in 1984 and '85, and for a quarter-century no R-rated comedy could top it. The closest anything came was Wedding Crashers, which made $209.3 million in 2005.

The Hangover, directed by Todd Phillips, is #3 among R-rated movies of all genres, behind Passion of the Christ and The Matrix Reloaded, neither of which are comedies, at least strictly speaking. It would have to make another $46 million to surpass Matrix Reloaded, and that probably isn't in the cards, »

'The Hangover' Now the Top R-Rated Comedy Ever

I mentioned it for a sentence or two yesterday in our box office recap, but I thought we should take a little more time to discuss exactly how impressive the run for The Hangover has been and continues to be. I was asked to contribute to an article for Movieblips.com back in late April and one of the questions was what I thought would be the sleeper hit of the summer. I answered The Hangover, so at least I got that one right.

The movie opened opposite Will Ferrell's Land of the Lost, and on paper even a few months ago, you would have said that Land of the Lost should have been the bigger movie of the two. It has been lapped almost five times over by a modestly budgeted R-rated buddy comedy with no stars.

'Harry Potter' Casts His Spell On The Saturday Box Office

2. "Ice Age:Dawn of the Dinosaurs" ($5.4 million)

To the surprise of no one, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" has the top spot so far this weekend. Friday showings nabbed another $26.8 million, giving the boy wizard a cumulative of $107 million in just three days. The sixth Potter installment, "Half-Blood Prince" is set to be the record breaker, and will probably beat the five-day box office take of the previous film, "Order of the Phoenix," which netted an impressive $139.7 million back in 2007.

If "Half-Blood Prince" crosses the $144 million mark, it will beat out "The Matrix Reloaded" to become Warner Bros.' second highest five day opener, right behind "The Dark Knight."
