Envision, Day Two: Demme & The Glass House

17 May 2009 8:47 AM, PDT | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

The second day of the Ifp's new United Nations co-sponsored Envision welcomed Academy Award winning director Jonathan Demme, who in a morning session discussed his long time engagement with Haiti, the Western Hemisphere's poorest country. The director spoke at length about the pair of documentaries he's made in the country, 1988's Haiti: Dreams of Democracy and 2003's The Agronomist. Clips were shown from the latter film, which chronicles the deceased Haitian radio journalist and human rights activist Jean Dominique, who was assassinated in April of 2000. One of the recurring topics over the course of the two days was the challenge involved in representing the issues of developing countries through local perspectives and not those »

Dream or Nightmare: What Will Become of the Nightmare on Elm Street Remake?

26 April 2009 4:39 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

I was on the Austin, TX set of the Platinum Dunes remake of Friday the 13th last June and, while it wasn't until months later that it was confirmed, I don't think anyone on that set thought that the Platinum Dunes Wouldn't get to do the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. The Dunes triumvirate of executive producer Michael Bay and producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, have been on a rampage through the horror genre since the production company's formation in 2001 and, with the buzz surrounding Friday the 13th, I'm sure I wasn't the only one not surprised when the Dunes deal for A Nightmare on Elm Street was inked in December. They have the principals in place - screenwriter Wesley Strick, director Samuel Bayer, Jackie Earle Haley as the iconic Freddy Krueger and young leads Kyle Gallner and recently announced Rooney Mara as Quentin and Nancy, the »

And the new Freddy Krueger is... Rorschach!

4 April 2009 10:10 AM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

No, I'm not kidding. Jackie Earle Haley will jump into the role of Freddy Krueger in New Line Cinema and Platinum Dunes' upcoming big-screen reboot of "A Nightmare on Elm Street."

Samuel Bayer will direct the remake from a script by Wesley Strick, whose credits include "Doom," "The Glass House" and "Cape Fear," among others. Variety says "Elm" will start shooting next month, with a release set for April 16, 2010.

So yeah, Haley will play the famous killer who slips into the dreams of teenagers. Robert Englund played the original Freddy Krueger in Wes Craven's 1984 film and its numerous sequels.

Haley, of course, can currently be seen as Rorschach in "Watchmen." He will next star in Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island." Some of his other credits include "Little Children," "Semi-Pro" and "The Bad News Bears." »

Jackie Earle Haley is the New Freddy Krueger

Earlier reports by Latino Review and Bloody Disgusting that Jackie Earle Haley was being eyed as the new Freddy Krueger in Platinum Dunes’ upcoming reboot of Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street have now been confirmed by the trades. The Watchmen star, who earned a best supporting actor Oscar nomination in 2006 for Little Children, has officially joined the film and will star as the horror icon made famous by Robert Englund. Bd.com is also reporting that Kyle Gallner, star of the current horror flick The Haunting in Connecticut, is in talks to play Quentin, a character said to be similar to the one Johnny Depp portrayed in the original film. The original Nightmare, released in 1984, helped establish New Line and spawned nine films and two TV series in what was the studio’s most lucrative franchise until The Lord of the Rings. Krueger is a serial child »

According to the Hollywood Reporter’s industry blog, Risky Biz, Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes and New Line have hired Samuel Bayer to direct the reboot of Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street. Wesley Strick (Doom, The Glass House) is writing the screenplay. Bayer is a veteran music video and commercial director, having worked with bands such as Green Day, Garbage, Metallica, David Bowie, The Cranberries, Blink 182 and Nirvana – he helmed the iconic video for Smells Like Teen Spirit. The original 1984 Wes Craven film revolved around several teenagers being terrorized in their nightmares by the ghost of a serial child murderer named Freddy Krueger, played by Robert Englund. The flick spawned six sequels and a horror anthology television series. Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are producing the film and have previously stated they hope to start production in the spring. Hit And Run (DVD Review)

22 January 2009 10:07 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

From first-time director Enda McCallion comes Hit And Run, a combination of last year’s Stuart Gordon film Stuck and 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer. This attempt at an art-house thriller mixed with psychological horror tries to be too many things at once, and ends up coming across as only average.

The film’s first half seems more like a social commentary, based on the real-life event that has already inspired not only Stuck but a Law And Order episode. Mary, played by Amusement’s Laura Breckinridge, is on her way home after getting drunk at a party when she runs over something. Arriving home, she soon learns that she has in hit a man, Emser (The Last Winter’s Kevin Corrigan), who is still impaled on the grill of her car but very much alive. After an extremely short bout of compassion followed by a longer »
