Hollywood celebrities can't compete with the canine stars of the Fido awards for dogs in cinema
In Hollywood, awards season is already in full swing, although it's at least three months until the Oscars ceremony. The big news so far is that, in a year in which the Best Picture category has been extended from five nominees to 10, the scaling down of the big studios' specialty divisions has led to the inevitable consequence of there being significantly fewer awards-worthy pictures.
Such concerns were far from the minds of the dog lovers who attended the third annual Fido awards, honouring canine excellence on the big screen, held yesterday at London's BFI Southbank. Who cares about the impact of the fiscal crisis on Hollywood when tails are still wagging on the big screen?
There may no longer be film franchises to rival those family friendly staples Lassie and Rin Tin Tin, but »

The Glee and Role Models star is one of only a few gay women on our screens
We all know that Hollywood is run by a cabal of homosexuals (or Jews, or liberals, or something), right? Well, apparently, it's not the homosexuals that you think, because it's not gay men – but (cue threatening music, speedy close up and dramatic turn of the head) gay women.
According to the New York Times, America is happier to watch gay women than gay men, citing the inevitable example of Ellen DeGeneres, whereas the American equivalents of, say, Graham Norton are notable by their absence. As though it weren't hard enough being a gay man in America already: you can die in a war, but you still can't get married in some states. And now you don't even have the prospect of seeing your name in lights.
But why is this, New York Times, »

Just when we thought Modern Family couldn't get any more hilarious...
The best new sitcom in years has announced that Fred Willard will guest star on a future episode. The actor - a veteran of movies such as Best in Show and For Your Consideration - will play Phil's father.
Said Ty Burrell (Phil), who campaigned for this casting addition earlier in the year:
“Fred is not just a pioneer for this type of comedy, but somebody who has really set the tone for how it can be done, so it was just a total honor [to work with him]. He really established, even going back to Spinal Tap, some of the funniest stuff out of the medium.”
Willard joins a long list of impressive Modern Family guest stars, including: Shelley Long, Edward Norton, Benjamin Bratt, Chazz Palmenteri and Minnie Driver. »

There's an old adage in show business that says something to the effect that casting is half the battle. If you cast a part well, you're sure to have a winning finished project. If that's true, then the casting of Fred Willard on Modern Family is sure to be a hit. I won't reveal what role Fred will be playing til after the jump, so if you don't want to know, don't read on. Suffice to say, the very funny Mr. Willard is being given a great opportunity to shine.
Willard, who was terrific on Everybody Loves Raymond, not to mention all the Christopher Guest films like Best In Show and A Mighty Wind, was on sitcom TV just last season on Fox's Back to You. In fact, it was on that show that Fred worked with Modern Family's Ty Burrell. Now they get to do it again.

Out actress Heather Matarazzo has signed on to play one of the most interesting characters she's likely to ever play — and she's played some odd ones. Heather will be starring as "a trailer-trash gal who loves singing and gets cast in a local production of Jesus Christ Superstar" who is likened to Jessica Simpson.
The film, Magnus!, is from openly gay director Ash Christian (Fat Girls) and Best in Show actress Jennifer Coolidge will play Heather's mom.
Yes, it sounds incredibly awesome.
Shooting starts this month and PrideSource.com reports that production hopes to be wrapped in time to get Magnus! in next year's Lgbt film festivals. Sounds good to me!
In the meantime, the just-turned 27-year-old actress is keeping busy as an ambassador for the Hetrick-Martin Institute, which just held its annual Emery Awards last night. Heather attended with her fiancée, Caroline Murphy.
And, of course, there's the return »

Sometimes being a fan only involves cranking up tunes in your car or having a poster on your wall. But some groups attract a whole different sect of enthusiast, which is why we've invented Fandemonium, a new feature devoted to the deep crevices of musical devotion. In the opening salvo, a Pearl Jam superfan makes a pilgrimage to see her favorite group and meet some like-minded folks along the way.
By Carrie Pierson
When I received special some special "Pearl Jam fans only" coupons upon arriving at my hotel in Philadelphia last Friday (October 30), I knew I had crossed the line from ardent admirer to superfan. After all, I was checking into the hotel under the special Pearl Jam Ten Club discounted rate available only to fan club members. You know the scene in "Best in Show" where all of the dog owners check into the hotel with their dogs? »

Michael Musto says it best in his Village Voice interview with Jane Lynch: she's everywhere — and it's a good thing, too. I mean, we can't keep watching her as Joyce Wischnia on our L Word DVDs forever, no matter how great the scene where she proposes to Phyllis in the nude truly is.)
Lynch first popped up on our radar playing the hilarious butch dog handler Christy Cummings in Best in Show, a role that obviously wasn't much of a stretch for her.
Now she's part of the ensemble for Nora and Delia Ephron's Off-Broadway hit, Love, Loss and What I Wore, Musto asks her if she's replacing Rosie O'Donnell, to which Lynch says, "I know they're gonna give me the butch lesbian to play!"
It's because she does it so well, and says she's "very attracted to feminine women."
When asked if she's always been out, Lynch says:

If the premiere episode of Community flunked the exam, and last week's episode scored top marks, then this week's show merely passed. Things started out crisply, but the show's second half couldn't maintain the laugh count, and it managed to turn me off to Abed (Danny Pudi). More on that later. First, it should be noted that for the second week in a row, a supporting character managed to steal the spotlight. Last week it was Ken Jeong as the eccentric Korean Spanish teacher Señor Chang, and this week we were introduced to Professor Whitman (John Michael Higgins), who taught a class in. »

Jane Lynch has arrived!
After years of making a ridiculously strong impression in bit parts in movies like The 40 Year Old Virgin and Best in Show, and in TV shows such as Party Down and Love Spring International, Lynch finally has a break-out star turn to call her own.
In Glee, she plays Sue Sylvester, the hilariously tyrannical head coach of the cheerleading squad who is determined to destroy the Glee program in order to co-opt their funding (because, damn it, she needs that fog machine!).
The character, like the show (which was recently picked up by the network for a full season), is wonderfully over-the-top.
Best of all, the show, and Lynch's role in the recent movie Julie & Julia which is garnering talk of an Oscar nomination, is something of a vindication for the 49-year-old actress who also happens to be an out lesbian.

Let's hear it for the boys! Dancing with the Stars' eight male contestants took to the freshly buffed parquet floor Monday night to kick off the new season. First up, were pop star Aaron Carter and Karina Smirnoff, who appeared to be wearing the same fringe pants that she performed in at the Emmy Awards on Sunday night. Cheered on by Aaron's brother, Nick Carter and his fellow Backstreet Boys, the duo delivered a solid cha cha. Len Goodman said it was full of potential. Bruno Tonioli called it sharp and edgy. And they were awarded 22 points. It was a tough act to follow for ultimate fighter Chuck Liddell and Anna Trebunskaya, who performed a clunky and funky fox trot. Carrie Ann Inaba thought Chuck was smooth and Len suggested Chuck get in touch with his feminine side. Their debut earned 16 points. Iron Chef America host Mark Dacascos and »

The 40-year-old Best In Show star has pulled out of an off-Broadway play, called This, to focus on battling her tick-borne illness.
Lyme Disease is treatable if diagnosed early, as it has been for Posey. If left untreated, bacteria can lead to severe brain and heart problems.

The truth about Sunday at this year's Comic-Con is that it was the day most people skipped - even the Hollywood studios. With only two film panels slated for the day (Overture's docu-romance Paper Heart, which stars a geeky girl who probably reads comics, and the festival hit Mystery Team, which will delight Encyclopedia Brown enthusiasts) it's no wonder that the whole place felt a little empty. So instead of recapping Sunday panels, I'm taking a look back at the entire four days of Comic-Con 2009 to point out what was good, great, and sort of weird about this year's... »

In a battle of Cthulhu vs. God, which fictional, all-powerful deity would win?
Thats precisely the question the makers of Scribblenauts, the new, interactive video game voted Best In Show at the recent E3, wanted to find out.
