‘Halo Legends’ Animated Feature Coming in 2010

6 November 2009 1:37 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The Halo franchise is going the Animatrix route by releasing a series of anime short films in a collected anthology entitled Halo Legends. The collection will feature seven stories told across eight episodes, all serving to expand the mythology of the Halo universe, much in the same way that the recently-released Halo 3: Odst sought to do.

For those of you still waiting on your live-action Halo movie, it seems as though you’ll have to make due with Legends for now, so, if “universe expansion films” like The Animatrix or Batman: Gotham Knight haven’t turned you off completely to this sort of thing, check out these highlights from the Halo Legends official press release:

Go deeper into the Halo universe than

ever before with Halo Legends, an all-new, CG and traditional anime

PG-13 experience that presents enthralling new stories from one of the

world’s most popular video game franchises. »

Original anime TV series Astro Boy evolves into movie, game

14 October 2009 6:04 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Before Speed Racer offered an anime slant to Saturday morning cartoons in the 1970s, and before G-Force or Voltron made kids rush home from school in the 1980s, there was Astro Boy.

Widely considered the original manga comic, Astro Boy was conceived and written by the recognized pioneer of the genre, Osamu Tezuka in 1952.

From the franchise's diminutive launch pad, the endless chain TV anime franchises took flight. Without Tezuka's creation, there's no Lupin III, no Golgo 13, no Ghost in the Machine, no Cowboy Bebop, etc. The strange thing is, some of those TV shows from different eras pack more U.S. pop culture recognition than the franchise that set the table.

New York Anime Festival 2009 Wrap-up

5 October 2009 9:57 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Picture a world where people gather and interact in joy and harmony, where groups of gaily-clad youths break into spontaneous song and dance at regular intervals, where spontaneous conga lines of diverse peoples stretch for blocks and wind through the market stalls, where merchants sell and people buy with easy affability and business is brisk, where people debate the topics of the day with great thoughtfulness and passion and the powers-that-be listen to the people-at-large. The Twilight Zone? Are you some sort of philosopher, or something? Well…no and yes. I just spent a weekend at my first New York Anime Festival at the Javitz Center in Manhattan and I found myself intermittently amused, bemused, overwhelmed, and overjoyed.

Think about it. Everyone has watched an animated something in their lifetime, no matter how old. From Looney Tunes to Disney to Hanna-Barbera to Pixar, we’ve experienced this media and it »

Great Deadpool movie meeting! Lauren Schuler Donner and her team are headed in the right direction!

Deadpool movie checklist – Dp in costume – check! Breaking 4th wall – check! Loads of killing- double check!

Also excited to discuss possibilities of Cable in future X-films!!!

Later on in the artist’s posts, he quickly corrects a mistake:

Clarification, Cable definitely Not in Deadpool movie, but possible role in future X-films….not First Class.

The emergence of the Deadpool movie came about when X-Men Origins: Wolverine was first released. Ryan Reynolds quickly signed on to star in the spinoff film, even though recently the actor »

While doing interviews for his soon to be released film “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee”, Neo himself updated the future of the film version of Keiko Nobumoto’s Anime tale of bounty hunters of the starship Bebop, traversing the solar system hunting down the bad guys for fame and fortune. MTV has it on film for you to enjoy. Keanu talks about the scope of the film and why the current draft would just be too expensive to make. Thanks Splashpage for the juice. Devil May Cry The Animated Series (DVD Review)

18 September 2009 10:20 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Strike one against my review of Devil May Cry The Animated Series; I don’t play video games. I don’t mean that as a snide aside, but Nintendo was forbidden in my childhood home and besides sinking a few thousand quarters into Spy Hunter at Chuck-e-Cheese (and Gal’S Panic at the boardwalk arcade, shh!) that particular seed of interest never got planted, and thus never grew into habitually kicking back with Call Of Duty.

Strike two: I am a casual animation fan, and not into anime. Once again I have nothing against it, in fact I’m so ignorant of the medium’s signatures that I can’t even submit a stereotypical portrait of anime fans. If I had to guess, replicas of samurai swords hang on their walls and if you were to say to one “I’ve seen Akira, and Miyazaki’s cool,” it’s like »

Eye on Anime: 'Eureka Seven' Movie Debuts in U.S.

31 August 2009 2:06 PM, PDT | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

Ncm Fathom and Bandai Entertainment – the ones who brought us a special showing of Death Note last year – team up again to debut a one-night showing of Eureka Seven -- Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers on Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. The nationwide event features the English-dubbed film and an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at its creation at the studio Bones. The writer of Eureka Seven, Dai Sato, is known for having penned anime greats Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and Samurai Champloo, to name a few. The Eureka series is comprised of 50 gripping episodes. Kudos to Sato for not dragging it out to a thousand-plus fillers. In Japan, it's known as Psalms of Planets Eureka Seven, and it deftly incorporates music. As with most mecha anime, this one is a...

Escaflowne: The Movie coming to the Us on Blu-ray Disc

7 July 2009 12:37 AM, PDT | Affenheimtheater | See recent Affenheimtheater news »

Over a year after the Japanese release of Escaflowne: The Movie on Blu-ray Disc, Bandai Entertainment has announced to bring Kazuki Akane’s theatrical adaptation to the USA in high definition as well. Rumors of the upcoming release have been circulation during the Anime Expo but now it has been confirmed on Mania.com (formerly Anime on DVD).

Escaflowne is supposed to be released on September 15th and will (unlike the Japanese Blu-ray Disc release) include English subtitles and the English dub in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (Yoko Kanno fans rejoice!). It’s still unknown if this release will be coming directly by Bandai Entertainment (like Sword of the Strager) or their elite sublabel Honneamise (Akira).

While it’s always nice to see more subtitled Blu-ray Disc releases coming to the Us I would have preferred Cowboy Bebop: Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door instead of the mediocre adaptation of the Vision of Escaflowne TV series, »

‘Cowboy Bebop’ Will Stay True to the Show

25 June 2009 9:38 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

In a very cool interview over at Anime Vice, Peter Craig, the screenwriter for the forthcoming Cowboy Bebop adaptation, talked a bit about how he got on board and how he plans to tackle the project. Unfortunately, he made no mention of his being a secret assassin that will take out Keanu Reeves before he has a chance to do any acting. And by "acting," I mean "talking soporifically and walking without walking into walls." Here's a rundown of the talking points: Craig admitted to being an odd choice of screenwriter since his work is mainly in novels, and mainly in dark comedic looks at strained father-child relationships. He had seen the show before learning of the assignment, but became obsessed with it after Fox sent him every episode (including a few that never aired in the U.S., lucky bastard). He met with studio Sunrise, original show director Shinichiro Watanabe and Keanu Reeves in December to »

'Full Metal Panic' to Get Big Screen Treatment

6 April 2009 11:34 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Following the footsteps of many other Japanese mangas, "Full Metal Panic" will get its own live-action adaptation. In recent reports, it has been claimed that Mandalay Pictures have picked up the rights to develop a feature version of the Japanese manga series which blends action, comedy and high school romance.

While planning to bring the manga to the big screen, Mandalay have yet to set up this proposed adaptation project at a studio. The Hollywood Reporter, in addition, suggested that "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" star Zac Efron has shown his interest in this movie and further claimed that the 21-year-old actor has held a conversation on the project.

The picking up of "Full Metal Panic" big screen rights only adds up to the already growing list of Japanese manga's live-action adaptations. "Cowboy Bebop", "Akira", "Ghost in the Shell", "Ninja Scroll", and "Afro Samurai" are some of the in-development manga adaptations. »

Is there hope for Keanu Reeves’ adaptation of ‘Cowboy Bebop’?

18 January 2009 5:15 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

So everyone’s inbox should have had the news this morning. Fox is going to go ahead with a live action adaptation of the much loved anime from Shinichiro Watanabe, Cowboy Bebop. And yes, Keanu Reeves will take the role of Spike Spiegel. You’ll remember our collective gnashing of teeth in December.

As far as Hollywood people involved there is no director set for the project but Reeves’ manager, Erwin Stoff, will be producing with 3 Arts. The script is in the hands of a short film director Peter Craig.

Now, here is where our hope lies folks. Sunrise president Kenji Uchida, the TV series’ director of animation, Shinichiro Watanabe, and series writer Keiko Nobumoto will serve as associate producers. Series producer Masahiko Minami will serve as production consultant. This doesn’t mean that I, myself, am breathing any easier but I’m not doing it into a paper bag anymore. »

Fox Moves Forward with ‘Cowboy Bebop’ and Reeves

Keanu Reeves Confirmed As Spike Spiegel In Cowboy Bebop

16 January 2009 11:01 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

So the inevitable has happened, as we mentioned previously, Keanu Reeves will assume the role of Spike Spiegel in a live-action Cowboy Bebop. Although this is a Sci-Fi mission for Fox, there are some signs of intelligent life.

From the Japanese anime, Reeves will star as Spike, hurling through space aboard the “Bebop.” The time is 2071 and the story follows a group of bounty hunters through their numerous adventures. No official details on which episode they’ll adapt from, but Reeves has said the plot would focus on a fictional drug “Red Eye.” A writer by the name of Peter Craig has the difficult task of writing the screenplay, but he will have some good help.

Sunrise Inc., producers of the anime series, will be involved during development. Sunrise’s Kenji Uchida and series director Shinichiro Watanabe will assume the role of associate producers along with Keiko Nobumoto, the series composition writer. »

Set in the year 2071, the late 1990s series focuses on a group of bounty hunters traveling on their spaceship, the Bebop. Reeves, 44, would play Spike Siegel, one of the bounty hunters and copilot of the Bebop.

No word yet on who would play Jet Black, Spike's copilot.

Sunrise Inc., producer of the anime series, will be involved with the project. Kenji Uchida and Shinichiro Watanabe will be the associate producers along with Keiko Nobumoto, Variety reports.

Keanu Is Officially A Cowboy

15 January 2009 8:46 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Keanu Reeves has been talking up his planned adaptation of the Japanese anime Cowboy Bebop since last summer. Who knew we were actually supposed to believe he has the pull to get his obscure passion projects made? Variety has made all the rumors official, announcing that Reeves will star in the live-action adaptation. Reeves will play Spike Spiegel, a bounty hunter living in the year 2071 and traveling through space as part of a gang of bounty hunters. Series writer Keiko Nobumoto and producer Masahiko Minami will be part of the production, but Peter Craig, a screenwriter with pretty much no high-profile credits to his name, will take care of writing the screenplay. I know literally nothing about Cowboy Bebop other than a poster my friend Nicole used to have on her wall in college, and I would call her for details but she's definitely asleep. So I'll have to leave »
