If they had such things as telephone books in the days of Oscar Wilde (Wilde lived til 1900 and the telephone was invented in 1876, so you never know), thousands might have gladly paid to have heard Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde recite from it. One can only imagine with delight what spin he might have given to the names and addresses he'd read aloud.
It is for this reason that, over 110 years since it was first produced, thousands still gladly pay to watch performances of perhaps Wilde's most renown play, "The Importance of Being Earnest."
The play serves as a paradigm for what is funny, the essence of comedy. For what, afterall, makes us laugh? "The unexpected," my play companion noted as we discussed the latest production of Wilde's work, now at Center Stage. To that I would add, the ironic, the juxtaposition of opposites played off each other, »

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you stuck Princess Diaries, Center Stage and Ilene Chaiken in a blender and pressed "frappe"? Well, you're about to find out. The CW is teaming up with The L Word creator to produce a drama based on the teen novel Confessions of a Backup Dancer.
I may be using the word "novel" a little too loosely. Confessions of a Backup Dancer makes Cecily von Ziegesar's Gossip Girl books look like Pulitzer Prize-winning literature. In fact, Confessions of a Backup Dancer makes Junie B. Jones' first grade journal look like Pulitzer Prize-winning literature.
See for yourself:
Junie B. Jones, seven years old, in Junie B. Jones, First Grader at Last.
Kelly Kimball, 17 years old, in Confessions of a Backup Dancer.
The premise of Confessions is that Kelly Kimball takes a job as a backup dancer for pop superstar Darcy Barnes. They become best pals until Darcy's mom, »

You might not have seen it coming when she was putting in thankless roles in movies like Center Stage and Drumline, but Zoe Saldana seems to be becoming the new go-to girl for any action movie that needs a female presence. She's Uhura in Star Trek, alien princess Neytiri in Avatar and seems to be the only significant female presence in The Losers, an adaptation of the comic book series about a band of intelligence operatives trying to re-establish their careers. Entertainment Weekly got a look at a photo of Saldana on the set, where you can see a little bit of her costume, but mostly take the opportunity to marvel at how gorgeous she is. Andy Diggle, who wrote the comic series, told EW, "Aisha [Saldana]s character] has to be deadly and desirable in equal measure, and Zoe embodies both qualities in spades. Trust me, you.ve never ... »

These last two weeks leading up to the show have been pretty crazy. Between rehearsing and keeping all of my Olympic snowboarding commitments, I have been on the move. This past week, Chelsie flew with me to Utah to practice because I had a meeting in Park City with the U.S. Snowboard Team. After my meeting in Park City, we went straight to practice at Chelsie's home dance studio, Center Stage, in Orem. After that, Chelsie and her Mom, who is super cool, came over to my house for dinner because my parents were in town. We were welcomed to an old fashioned Italian feast! Although, I had to pay for it with a 7 a.m. practice. After that, I headed straight to a flight to Chicago for a United States Olympic Committee (Usoc) Media Summit and I was stoked for airplanes and reclining seats -- oh wait, my seat didn't recline. »

No, it's not some sort of suicide attempt. It's a scene from this season's One Tree Hill and it involves one of the series' new cast members, Robert Buckley and Center Stage actress Amanda Schull.
Rescue divers, jet skis, small boats, the U.S. Coast Guard and area law enforcement were all on guard to make sure everything went smoothly last week as the two One Tree Hill actors jumped off the Wrightsville Beach bridge. A man was first spotted jumping off several times, landing in the slick-calm water of Banks Channel, before Buckley, who plays Nathan's agent Clayton Dawson, was spotted holding hands with Schull while pretending to jump a couple of times and yelling, "We'll be there in a minute."

Spot Zoe Saldana as Britney Spears' Bff:
Spot Zoe Saldana as a drumline dancer:
Spot Zoe Saldana as a pirate of the Caribbean:
Spot Zoe Saldana inexplicably falling in love with Ashton Kutcher:
Spot Zoe Saldana stealing breath from the Trekkies:
Yes, that's right: Zoe Saldana has been in every movie you've ever seen, and shame on you for not noticing! Unless you did notice. In which case, »

Thirty-five years ago today, Mikhail Baryshnikov made his U.S. debut in Giselle. The clip below, from a 1977 performance, reminds those of us whose knowledge of dance stems primarily from Dancing With the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance and Center Stage that some performances do truly deserve a standing ovation and the "Deeley Chills."
