Monologue - Beauty Queen

9 November 2009 8:04 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Jose here bringing you the Monday Monologue.

From the moment Erin Brockovich was released, in March of 2000, everyone knew that Julia Roberts would win an Oscar for it. There was nary a review that did not point out how fantastic she was, how she carried the burdens of a dramatic role so well (after practically creating the entire rom-com movement throughout the 90's) and how big her boobs looked.

But beyond the awards craze, the "she can act" novelty and the miniskirts, the truth is that Julia had created a character all her own. One that might've looked and sounded like Julia Roberts, but was all Erin Brockovich.

This is never as evident as in a small, intimate scene where Erin opens up to a man (her biker neighbor played by Aaron Eckhart) for the first time in years. Are you gonna be something else that I have to survive? »

Decade in Review: 2000 Top Ten

5 November 2009 1:07 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

What follows is my original top ten list of 2000... or rather the revised version I published in 2002. Let's discuss each year of this decade as it winds down! Who's with me?!? It's always interesting to see which films remained at the forefront of our memory and which fade... both for a variety of reasons, quality being only one factor. New comments are in red.

Please note: This list was based on NYC release dates in the year 2000. Some movies are listed as different years at the IMDb based on when they were released in their home country or in La or whatnot.

Runners Up (in descending order): Une Liaisons Pornographique, Nurse Betty, You Can Count On Me, Before Night Falls, Pola X, Chicken Run, American Psycho, Wonder Boys and Billy Elliott Um... What The Hell are some of these movies doing outside the top ten list? You Can Count on Me »

Soderbergh says making The Informant was a piece of cake

26 October 2009 8:24 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Steven Soderbergh says 'The Informant!' was "embarrassingly easy" to direct.

The Oscar-winning film maker - who has previously worked on Hollywood blockbusters like 'Erin Brockovich' and 'Oceans Eleven - says the dark comedy was a simple film to make because they lead actor Matt Damon was perfect for the role.

He said: "Making the movie was the most fun I've had on a shoot since 'Erin Brockovich.' It was the right material, the right actor, the right time. I have to say, it felt embarrassingly easy."

Matt plays Mark Whitacre, a corporate whistleblower who attempts to bring down a Us business giant but ends up embezzling more that $9 million. The 39-year-old actor had to put on 30lb in weight for the role.

Steven recently revealed revealed Matt loved bulking up for the part.

He said: "I think he really had fun doing it - he looked like he had fun. »

The Girlfriend Experience Blu-ray Review

13 October 2009 9:07 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

The Girlfriend Experience (2009) covers several days in the life of a high-end escort in Manhattan. Media coverage surrounding this independent effort from director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Erin Brockovich) highlighted his choice of adult film star, Sasha Grey, to portray the main character, Chelsea. I had never heard of the aspiring actress (she's done over 100 "movies" to date) before the film's publicity efforts, but a quick Google search returned probably more info and pictures than most straight laced folks would desire. Those familiar with Sasha's oeuvre hoping to get artsy-fartsy Hollywood porn will be sadly disappointed, as there is barely any nudity and no explicit sex on display.

What makes Chelsea's services unique is that for $2000 per hour she provides what is alluded to in the title, time with a significant other. She gets wined and dined, for the most part, by high earning businessmen while making conversation about their daily »

First Image and Featurette from Extraordinary Measures Starring Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser and Keri Russell

8 October 2009 3:15 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

CBS Films has sent over the first image and a first look featurette from director Tom Vaughan’s (”Starter for 10,” “What Happens in Vegas”) “Extraordinary Measures”. The film stars Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser and Keri Russell and it’s inspired by the true story of John Crowley, a man who defied conventional wisdom and great odds, and risked his family’s future to pursue a cure for his children’s life threatening disease. While the featurette is mostly the real John Crowley talking about his story, at the end Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser say a few words. While this kind of movie might not appeal to all of you, with the cast involved, I thought it was worth sharing. I’m hoping with Tom Vaughan directing it’ll be more than a movie of the week. Take a look at the image and featurette after the jump. “Extraordinary Measures »

Stanley Tucci Goes "Burlesque" with Cher and Christina Aguilera

24 September 2009 2:23 PM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

This is a movie we've been following closely since May (See Cher Joins Christina Aguilera in Musical "Burlesque" and Christina Aguilera to Star in Titillating Musical "Burlesque"). Why? Because it's being called "Showgirls" the Musical starring Cher and Christina Aguilera.

But I'm sure it's not going to be as campy as "Showgirls" gosh darn it!

Now, Stanley Tucci is joining Cher and Christina Aguilera in the film to be directed by Steve Antin.

Antin also wrote the script which was polished by Susannah Grant ("Erin Brockovich"! See? Not campy).

Aguilera will play an ambitious small town Iowa girl with a big voice who finds love, family and success in a Los Angeles burlesque club. Cher will play Tess, a former dancer who takes the small town girl under her wing. Tucci will star as the manager of the club and the best friend of Tess. And they will all sing and dance! »

Review: Did You Ever See... Erin Brockovich?

18 September 2009 2:08 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Steven Soderbergh's The Informant is released in the Us this week. Matt Damon plays Mark Whitacre, in the story of a real-life executive at a corn-based food company that went to the FBI to expose the corporation's price-fixing tactics.

This isn't the first Soderbergh film dealing with real individuals. Last year he made the history lesson disguised as film Che Parts One and Two. One of his earliest films saw the author Kafka entering a world where fiction and reality merged. And he has also made a biopic of another whistle-blower. It bagged an Oscar for it's lead actress Julia Roberts, and lost out on the award for best film to Soderbergh's own Traffic. I'll see you on the other side for a look at 2000's Erin Brockovich. »

Aaron Eckhart Talks 'Unconventional' Romance Movie 'Love Happens'

'Love surprises you,' the actor says of the plot of his new film.

Beverly Hills, California — Has there ever been an actor quite like Aaron Eckhart? The guy rose to fame playing one of the greatest jerks in cinematic history for "In the Company of Men" and returned to that territory again for 2005's "Thank You for Smoking," but spent the near-decade in between establishing himself as one of Hollywood's most amicable personalities.

Now, after all these years of surprise successes ("Erin Brockovich") and poorly conceived failures ("The Core," "Paycheck," "The Black Dahlia"), he utilized his unusual duality to great effect playing Harvey "Two-Face" Dent in "The Dark Knight" and has never been hotter. It only makes sense that once again he'd throw us all for a loop with "Love Happens," a Jennifer Aniston romantic film that is far darker than you'd expect. »

Aaron Eckhart Love Happens Interview

With numerous credits to his name, Aaron Eckhart has earned considerable acclaim for his roles, including the love interest of Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich, for director Steven Soderbergh. However, it was his portrayal of a love-scorned, vengeful man in Neil Labute’s controversial film In the Company of Men that first drew him attention. Notably, this incendiary film became one of the highest-grossing independent films of 1997. Eckhart recently starred in Warner Bros. The Dark Knight, in which he played Harvey Dent/Two-Face for director Christopher Nolan. He was also seen in ... »

Inspired, on this week's IFC News podcast we take a closer look at some of those clichés and the films that best embody them, from "The Insider" to Soderbergh's own "Erin Brockovich."

Toronto International Film Festival Coverage

Screen Rant would like to welcome guest reporter John H. Foote, who is covering the 34th Toronto International Film Festival for us. We have his first report for you today, with more sure to come. Check out first word on some of the Fall/Winter’s biggest films:

I would be a fool if I did not at least mention I had seen Antichrist here at the 34th Toronto International Film Festival, and though beautifully shot, the film is among the most repellent works I have ever seen. That said, I have been unable to think about much else since seeing it. ‘Nuff said.

Up in the Air might be the best film of the year, a superbly acted, directed and written film that brings out the very best in George Clooney, who stars as Ryan, a man traveling America firing company employees when their own bosses lack the courage to do so. »

The Informant! Review

11 September 2009 11:12 AM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Steven Soderbergh’s The Informant! is a clever, unconventional comedy about corporate greed in the 90’s and the highest-ranking executive whistleblower in U.S. history.  The wacky sibling of the more serious Erin Brockovich, Soderbergh’s latest strikes a satirical tone on the timely, true events.  Perhaps the exclamation point in the title gave it away.

The story focuses on the agricultural business of corn byproducts used in a variety of foods.  “It’s all very scientific, but if you’re a stockholder, all that matters is that corn goes in one end and profit comes out the other.”  But a criminal conspiracy means “everyone in this country is a victim of corporate crime by the time they finish breakfast.”

Though the cast is loaded with recognizable comedic faces, Matt Damon (in his fifth collaboration with Soderbergh) makes this funny film worth the watch.  The accomplished, charismatic actor shows tremendous »

Steven Soderbergh Casts Martial Artist Gina Carano in Knockout

7 September 2009 6:20 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh is looking to spice up his resume by adding a little action, and he's picked a mixed martial arts fighter to help him.

The director of Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Erin Brockovich, Ocean's Eleven, and Traffic will next direct Knockout, a spy thriller in the mold of a 007 movie, but with a female lead. Soderbergh discovered his Knockout leading lady, Gina Carano, a Muay Thai-trained fighter, on the Mma circuit where she had a professional fight record of 7-1.

The script for Knockout is by Lem Dobbs, who previously wrote Kafka and The Limey for Soderbergh. Soderbergh is expected to surround Carano with name actors in supporting roles, but no other names have been announced. Production is slated to begin in late January, 2010.

Trailer Watch: Bullock Adapts Blind Side

23 August 2009 9:13 PM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Hollywood was bound to make a movie of Michael Lewis’s non-fiction book The Blind Side. The question is, what kind? I wish Steven Soderbergh were directing this Lewis movie (as long as he’s not doing Moneyball) because he would bring the clear-eyed authenticity that made both Erin Brockovich and Traffic Oscar winners instead of soapy high-minded morality tales. I’m assuming that this sudsy The Blind Side trailer is warping the message … »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Soloist’ Wastes Powerful Story, Great Actors

11 August 2009 10:22 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Stars Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. do absolutely nothing wrong in Joe Wright’s “The Soloist,” now on Blu-Ray and DVD, and there’s more than enough inherent power in the story of a musical genius lost to mental illness and the horrible way we treat the homeless in this country for a quality drama, but this cinematic solo misses too many notes to have the impact that it should have with this much talent involved.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0 The cast & crew list for “The Soloist” is remarkable enough that the film almost opened the AFI Film Festival last year based on pedigree alone. Then someone saw the movie and Joe Wright’s third drama (after “Pride & Prejudice” and “Atonement”) was pushed from Oscar season to April. We should have known something was wrong then.

The Soloist was released on Blu-Ray on August 4th, 2009.

tMF Oscarwatch: Best Actress Losers - Ellen Burstyn ( Requiem for a Dream)

11 August 2009 12:09 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

If there is one particular actress that filmmaker Darren Oronofsky likes to cast, then it has to be Ellen Burstyn. In The Fountain, the director himself wrote into the script a role for the acclaimed actress. In Requiem for a Dream, Burstyn was nominated for a Best Actress award, and it was very unfortunate she did not win- her performance is way up there with the greats.

In the movie, Burstyn portrays Sara Goldfarb, an elderly widow who became addicted with weight-loss amphetamine pills, was hospitalized against her will, undergoes painful electro-convulsive therapy, and later on was confined at a mental asylum. For her performance, she won the Indie Spirit Award for Best Lead Female and more than 8 major critics' association awards for Best Actress. She also received nominations for Best Actress from the Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globes and the Oscars.
