Even without the participation of CBS in the final two seasons, this series continued on with exceptional storylines, brilliant acting, and a wonderful lineup of guest stars. Sure there were cast changes, but the writers did an excellent job of introducing Callum Keith Rennie as Stanley Ray Kowalski, a new police detective who masqueraded as Detective Raymond Vecchio while the real Vecchio went undercover in the mob and did not return until the finale episode. And even in the series finale, the writers were able to incorporate both characters without making it seem like "three's a crowd".There were no typical storylines such as having a main character quit or killed to pave the way for a new one; viewers were simply told that Vecchio was on assignment. And Lieutenant Welsh explicitly said to Benton Fraser in the opening episode of the third season that Kowalski was a "good cop ... give him a chance." Seems like he also directed this statement to the viewing public. And by starting off on a positive note viewers should come to accept these temporary changes.Viewers were given hope that David Marciano would return in the end as Ray Vecchio, and in fact, he did make a special guest appearance for the two hour finale. Series ended on a high note. Cheers to Paul Gross who took over the reins as excecutive producer and writer. No thanks to CBS!
