Review
Box set of all three films in feature series adapted from the apocalyptic “Left Behind” series of novels, a kind of biblical sci-fi that envisions the end of days prophesied in the Bible as an epic thriller, written by Jerry B. Jenkins and Reverend Tim LaHaye. In Left Behind, journalist Kirk Cameron and pilot Brad Johnson stumble onto a bizarre phenomenon: people are simply disappearing from the face of the Earth. It tries to mine the X-Files zeitgeist, replacing the alien conspiracy with the Rapture and the ascendance of the Antichrist, but the execution more resembles a hysterical 1970s TV movie than a contemporary theatrical feature and director Vic Sarin counts too much on an audience already sold on the concept. In Left Behind: Tribulation Force, directed by Bill Corcoran, and Left Behind: World at War, directed by Craig R. Baxley, Cameron and Johnson continue their efforts to avert the apocalypse as the seemingly benign Nicolae Carpathia (Gordon Currie) rises as a world leader.
