Trivia:
This was the first Godzilla film since Mekagojira no gyakushu (1975) (and the first Toho tokusatsu film since Wakusei daisenso (1977)) to be shot in the classic 2.35:1 (CinemaScope) aspect ratio. Previously, all films from Gojira (1984) to Gojira VS Desutoroiâ (1995) (which made up the VS/Heisei Series) were shot in 1.85:1 (VistaVision).

Goofs:
Continuity: Katagiri asks who gave Shinoda authorization to enter the building, and Miyasaka admits that he did it. This creates an inconsistency in the American cut of the film, which deleted eight minutes of footage from the Japanese cut, as one of the deleted scenes showed the soldier who stops Shinoda talking on the phone with Miyasaka, who tells him that Shinoda is authorized to enter the building. The American version is edited to make it appear that the bombing siren distracts the soldier and Shinoda runs into the building unnoticed.

Don't you think this is a little too close?
Yuji Shinoda: I need to get as close as possible. If you don't like it, go home and watch it on TV.

On the surface, at least in the opening fifteen minutes or so of the film, "Godzilla 2000" looks like it could be one of the best of the series. It started out looking truly creating and colorful, but after its spectacular opening sequence, it falls short on several points. First of all, there is the plot and storyline. It's not entirely original, but it could have worked out only if it was developed properly. Unfortunately, it just takes up too much time to go through before the final climax, which would be the part we want to see most of all.
Special effects are also a bit of a problem, mostly concerning Godzilla himself. The suit that was used to portray Godzilla in this film looked great in the opening sequence, especially with the bright background glow and combined with Takayuki Hattori's marvelous music score. But starting from after that point onward, it didn't look as good and was oftentimes very revealing. Godzilla's opponent, Orga, looked realistic enough, but there wasn't enough mobility in his hands and other body parts to make him convincing enough. Graphics used for Godzilla's death-ray were, however, realistic enough.
Overall, "Godzilla 2000" is an okay entry in the series. Too bad, because it had the potential and appearance to be one of the best yet.
