Why Rgv handed over the sequel reins to Phoonk writer? - News

10 December 2009 10:23 PM, PST | GlamSham | See recent GlamSham news »

The trailers of Phoonk 2 have managed to arouse quite a curiosity amongst patrons of horror movies. Some are likening it to Sony Pictures' The Grudge (2004), which was the first horror film to top the Halloween box office after House On Haunted Hill (1991). However, it is surprising for many that even after the mind-blowing success of Phoonk, director Ram Gopal Varma is not wielding the microphone this time around; rather it is the scriptwriter, Milind Gadker, who has been assi »

Halloween List-Making Invades The MTV Newsroom

30 October 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

For this week's final Halloween movies list, I decided to turn hit up the real superstars: my co-workers here in the MTV Newsroom who keep this great ship moving every damn day. After the jump you'll find recommendations and reminiscences from around the office. If you're game for some heavy reading, make sure to check out the last write-up, detailing Joel Hanek's pick: "Ernest Scared Stupid." Oh yes, he went there.

As for myself (MTV Movies Blog editor Adam Rosenberg), it's a toss-up. To this day I still have occasional nightmares relating to "Candyman," the Bernard Rose-directed, Virginia Madsen-starring horror flick based on a tale by novelist Clive Barker. There's something uniquely terrifying about the Candyman's ability to attack at any time, day or night. When horror can touch you even in the relative safety of sunlight, that's something to fear.

The other one that still gets me, »

50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 1

27 October 2009 5:54 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Given man's unwavering fascination with woman, it's no surprise that the female star acts as the anchor to a dominant portion of horror pictures. I mean really, who wants to see a bare chested man tearin ass through the woods screaming at the top of his lungs while a bladed assailant nips at his heels? I don't - I know that much, although I'm certain there are plenty of men who would disagree (and that's okay with me, to each his own!). The simple fact remains however, women bring a unique appeal and certain sensual atmosphere to film that no man ever could. And it's not all about gratuitous T&A.

There's a comforting quality in the hands of the heroine; a fascinating maternal strength that, as a man I cannot genuinely relate to. I can however admire, and in many cases it's nearly impossible to not admire the lone »

Multiple Personality Disorder report

26 October 2009 11:23 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

[Editor's Note: Multiple Personality Disorder Reports are short news blasts meant to let you know about the stuff that didn't make it to the news page but still had us talking behind the scenes]

#1: RZA talks about films in the works

RZA is a genius musician but he’s ready to make the leap into film. In a recent interview with The A.V. Club, he confirmed that work is progressing on “The Man with the Iron Fist”, an old school “martial arts extravaganza” which will also be his directorial debut (with a little help from Eli Roth(?). If that’s not enough, RZA has also signed on to produce “The Last Dragon” remake with Samuel L. Jackson, a project he had already agreed to star in last year. [via: The A.V. Club]

#2: “Ghost in the Shell” goes live-action

Laeta Kalogridis (the writer behind “Night Watch”, “Alexander” and the god awful “Pathfinder” – 2 for 3 aint bad) is in the process of adapting a live-action version of “Ghost in the Shell.” Yes, he’ll try his hand at making high-brow, non-sensical (but awesome) anime into a package that Hollywood will eat-up. »

Director William Malone Talks Next Project -- Phoenix Dust

22 October 2009 12:46 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Recently we caught up with William Malone at the La Screamfest to get the early word on his next project. Best known for directing The House on Haunted Hill, Parasomnia, and "The Fair-Haired Child" episode of Masters of Horror, we're looking forward to what Bill has cooking next. Which is ...

"I've got this project," Malone tells Dread. "It's a big budget sci-fi film called Phoenix Dust, so I'm working right now on a promotional film for that, and that's been taking up a lot of my time. Lots of green screen in it, but it's got everything people could want ... monsters, robots, half-naked chicks ... what more could you want?"

Ummm ... Catholic schoolgirls riding mechanical bulls? Did I just type that? Never mind. Anyway ... look for more on Phoenix Dust soon.

Director Named for Sequel to 'Mirrors'

12 October 2009 12:44 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

It was first announced that Fox was working on a sequel to Mirrors, the 2008 horror flick directed by Alexandre Aja and starring Kiefer Sutherland. That film did better than you probably would think, and that's why Fox believes there's more money to be made here.

However, we know Sutherland won't be back, and because he's not writing it - and he's always written what he's directed - we assumed Aja wouldn't be in the running to direct. Now Bloody Disgusting confirms our suspicions, saying that Víctor García will run the sequel.

Who's that guy? Well, unless you saw Return to the House on Haunted Hill, you probably aren't familiar with his work. So you're probably not familiar with his work. »

Sitges '09: My Sitges Story - Part 2

5 October 2009 10:05 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Sunday, October 4

So I do my best to get to bed early the night before my first full day at Spain’s Sitges film festival (see first entry here), but after only five hours, I’m wide awake and unable to sleep another wink. Nonetheless, I will do my darnedest to persevere through at least three movies today.

First film on my line-up is the premiere of director Andrew Monument’s documentary Nightmares In Red, White & Blue: The Evolution Of The American Horror Film, which is screening at one of the festival’s secondary venues, the Prado, located in town. With none of the filmmakers on hand, including writer Joseph Maddrey, whose book served as the basis of the film, I’ve been asked to moderate the screening, as I am one of the interviewees in the production. Although it is 10 a.m. and no one in Sitges seems to hit the sack until 7 a. »

Every now and then, a movie comes out that transforms a male actor into someone to be desired, adored and often watched for decades to come. We're experiencing such a phenomenon now with Robert Pattinson, who has essentially starred in one wide-release movie and had "Twilight" transform him from "Who's that?" to "Hottest Man Alive" overnight.

But where does RPattz go from here? Will he launch a decades-long career? Work with directors like Spielberg and Scorsese? Or will he become another Hollywood cautionary tale? Below are a handful of beefcake breakouts transformed by one major role, whose careers could perhaps give guidance to the Sparkly One.

Smash Cut to screen at the Trinity Of Terrors!

The much-talked about H.G. Lewis-inspired Smash Cut has been added to our Fango Film Fest for the inaugural Fangoria Trinity Of Terrors taking place October 30 through November 1 at The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas!

Able Whitman (David Hess - appearing at The Trinity!) is a horror-film director whose movies are panned by critics and audiences alike — until he starts killing people and using their body parts as props in his new flick.

Now, only intrepid Smash Cut. reporter April Carson (Sasha Grey) and celebrated private detective Isaac Beaumonde (Jesse Buck) stand between the demonic director and his unquenchable thirst for butchery at 24 frames per second!

Inspired by the career and filmography of Herschell Gordon Lewis, Smash Cut is a gore-splattered satire of the blood sport known as filmmaking.

This director's cut bleeds!

Plan 9: A Night of Riffing Ed Wood

21 August 2009 7:24 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

My chest still hurts thirty minutes after leaving the theatre my chest still hurts from laughing so damn much.  The source of such pain? Rifftrax Live presents Plan 9 From Outer Space.  Broadcast from the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville, Tennessee, the event was sent live to 433 theatres.  I set out with fellow Fangoria staffer Bekah to join the faithful in Glen Allen, Virginia.  One thing is for certain if the Glen Allen theatre was any measure of attendance, the Rifftrax crew sold out in all 433 theatres.

The evening was hosted by Veronica Belmont, with special musical guest Jonathan Coulton and guest of honor, Ed Wood’s Plan 9 From Outer Space.  Referred to as the Citizen Kane of bad movies, Plan 9 is the story of aliens, zombies, and a dead heroin addict actor only made watchable when it’s being properly Riffed!
