Decade in Review: 2000 Top Ten

5 November 2009 1:07 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

What follows is my original top ten list of 2000... or rather the revised version I published in 2002. Let's discuss each year of this decade as it winds down! Who's with me?!? It's always interesting to see which films remained at the forefront of our memory and which fade... both for a variety of reasons, quality being only one factor. New comments are in red.

Please note: This list was based on NYC release dates in the year 2000. Some movies are listed as different years at the IMDb based on when they were released in their home country or in La or whatnot.

Runners Up (in descending order): Une Liaisons Pornographique, Nurse Betty, You Can Count On Me, Before Night Falls, Pola X, Chicken Run, American Psycho, Wonder Boys and Billy Elliott Um... What The Hell are some of these movies doing outside the top ten list? You Can Count on Me »

10 Most Overrated Young Actors

13 October 2009 7:18 PM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

We've listed down our top 50 hottest young actors and would be coming up with the latest updates very soon. Yesterday, we discussed  about actors we believed to be quite underrated. How about the young actors we consider overrated? That's what this article is for...

- - -

- - -

Who qualifies as overrated? Guys who seem to be getting lots of buzz, but has no real talent at all, or perhaps just a small amount of it. I have no issue if an actor gets the cover of GQ or Details or L'Uomo Vogue every month. They can even strut their stuff on the catwalks of Milan and Paris and gain additional media mileage. But to be considered the hottest actor on the planet with nothing to show yet? That is something totally absurd.

Anyway, here's our list of ten just after the jump!

Favreau & Downey Jr vs. Cowboys & Aliens

2 September 2009 12:16 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

We’ve been talking about Robert Downey Jr’s possible attachment to Cowboys and Aliens for quite a while. However, it now looks like Downey Jr’s Iron Man director, Jon Favreau, is trying to lasso the directors chair for the film, and if he signs up then it looks like Iron Man himself is all but locked for the picture.

The concept of the film in question is simple - Cowboys versus Aliens. If that doesn’t rock your boat, then it’s time to stop reading!

The film is based on a graphic novel by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, which was written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley. The script for the movie was penned by the high-powered writing combination of Star Trek’s Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, along with Lost’s Damon Lindeloff.

With Iron Man 2 already shot and currently in post-production, it looks like »

John Carter of Mars Adds Three

24 August 2009 9:07 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The cast of Disney’s big-screen adaptation of Edgar Rice BurroughsJohn Carter of Mars keeps on growing, adding three English (read: talented) actors to the roster. Joining John Carter of Mars will be Dominic West (The Wire, 300), Samantha Morton (In America) and Polly Walker (HBO’s Rome).

The three English actors join Willem DaFoe, (supposedly) Thomas Hayden Church and Wolverine stars Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins (Gambit and Silver Fox), who will be playing lead characters John Carter and his love interest, Mars princess Dejah Thoris.

According to The Hollywood Reporter: “Morton will play Sola, the daughter of Tars Tarkas (DaFoe), who must hide her softer side from her warmongering race. West plays Sab Than, prince of the Zodangans who believes he is entitled to rule Mars. Walker plays Sarkoja, a merciless, tyrannical Thark.”

Writer/Producer/Director Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Wall-e) will be making his live-action directorial debut »

Who Are Your Favorite Movie Professors?

10 July 2009 10:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

You can't turn around in a movie without bumping into a professor. If it's not Nicolas Cage as the unlikeliest astrophysicist to be granted tenure at M.I.T. in Knowing, just released on DVD, it's the passel of professors that will undoubtedly be presented in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, due out in theaters next Wednesday. Which kind of professor do you prefer?

My early impressions were formed by seeing the distinguished, imposing Harvard law professor John Houseman dress down Timothy Bottoms in James Bridges' The Paper Chase: "Here is a dime. Take it, call your mother, and tell her there is serious doubt about you ever becoming a lawyer." My impressions changed dramatically when I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark. Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones may have been more of a thrill-seeker than an academic, but he was driven by his love for archeology »

Yet Another Writer Hired for Spider-Man 4

9 July 2009 6:58 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

I'm not quite sure what's going on with Spider-Man 4 right now, but apparently the script is still being kicked around, and this week yet another new screenwriter has been brought in to have a crack at it. Columbia has hired Gary Ross (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit, Big) to do a rewrite, who has previously worked with Tobey Maguire on a number of projects. Story details are still very much under wraps. This makes Ross the third major writer to join the project after James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) and David Lindsay-Abaire (Inkheart) also wrote previous versions of the screenplay. For the moment it appears that Sam Raimi is not having a hand in writing the screenplay himself. So is this a reason to start worrying about the film? I don't think so. While too many rewrites can leave a movie nearly incoherent, this doesn't always have to be the case. Let's not forget »

This week, Chris, Matt and Christina are back with a brand new episode and ready for action. Among the subjects covered this time around are the T.J. Katie Holmes Hosts Ifp Spring Event

27 April 2009 2:44 PM, PDT | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

It was a really nice evening last night at the new Cooper Square Hotel where actress Katie Holmes hosted an Ifp 30th Anniversary Spring Event. The event was co-chaired by producer Hunter Gray (Memorial Day, Zero Bridge, Momma's Man, Half Nelson, pictured at right) and producer Anthony Bregman (Synecdoche, New York, Sleep Dealer, Friends with Money, and Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini's upcoming The Extra Man, which stars Holmes, pictured at left). In his remarks, Bregman talked about Holmes's long history with independent and specialty films, including roles in The Ice Storm, Go, Thank You for Smoking and Pieces of April. I'd add to that her part in one challenging studio film, Wonder Boys, which is a movie that keeps getting... »

Chabon to Pen 'John Carter from Mars'

14 April 2009 9:00 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

I rarely take much notice of the posts on Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood blog. However, according to /Film, it seems that about a week ago Finke suggested that Michael Chabon, the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Adventures of Kavalier and Clay", had been tapped to do some writing revisions on the script for John Carter from Mars, the first live-action effort coming from Wall-e director Andrew Stanton.

A Chabon fansite, The Amazing Website of Kavalier and Clay, coaxed the author himself into a confirmation:

"I wrote my original screenplay The Martian Agent back in 1995 because I wished I could do [Edgar Rice] Burroughs’s 'Barsoom'. So this is pretty much a dream come true for me."

Chabon said he had been hired to do "some revisions" on the current script written by Mark Andrews and Stanton, which he described as "already strong."

Stanton’s presence as director is already intriguing. To »

Trailer - 'The Mysteries of Pittsburgh'

11 March 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Michael Chabon is one of the best fiction writers going. His Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay is a must read and a Pulitzer Prize winner, and though I haven't read his novel Wonder Boys, it's a damn fine film.

Another of his books has been adapted for the screen, and we'll get to see The Mysteries of Pittsburgh later this year. It's a coming of age story about a college graduate in the steel city, and a year ago, it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, although most people would have a tiny but better connection to the project because Sienna Miller made negative comments about the city while filming there.

In addition to Miller, Mysteries stars Mena Suvari, Nick Nolte, Peter Sarsgaard, and Jon Foster. »

Curtis Hanson looking at 'Gemini Man' for Jerry Bruckheimer.

16 February 2009 | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

Curtis Handson is currently in talks to helm "Gemini Man" for producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Disney film is penned by David Benioff and tells of an Nsa agent who makes an effort to retirew but turns out becoming a target. His assassin? A clone of his younger self.   Hanson has credits including "The Hand that Rocks the Cradle," "Wonder Boys," "L.A. Confidential" "8 Mile," "In Her Shoes" and "Lucky You."   Cast possibilities would be interesting indeed. Hanson's last project "Lucky You" was not well received, bringing in a paltry $2.7 million from 2,525 theatres on its debut weekend. The film eventually ended up with just $5.7 million domestically and an additional $2.6 million internationally.   »

Gemini Man: One Of The Coolest Movie Concepts Ever

15 February 2009 9:53 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

I’ve been following the development of Gemini Man for almost a decade now. In my humble opinion it is without a doubt one of the most exciting film concepts that I’ve ever heard - that has never been made.

The concept is simple:

The world’s best assassin is getting old and starting to lose it, there’s just one thing - he’s still the best. The only way to defeat him is to clone him and get the younger clone to hunt him down and kill him.

However, that’s not the best part.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer wants an aging action star and a computer manipulated younger version of that actor in the film.

Think of the Harrison Ford of today facing off against the Star Wars era Ford. Imagine an older Mel Gibson fighting his 20 year old Mad Max. Or even more exciting imagine Sean Connery »

Curtis Hanson Is A Gemini

13 February 2009 10:58 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Curtis Hanson has had a completely unpredictable career as a director, from the clever thriller L.A. Confidential to the mopey, critically slaughtered romance Lucky You. But thus far he hasn't gone much into the action genre, and he's looking to fix that by taking on a Jerry Bruckheimer action thriller. Yes, the director of Wonder Boys will be collaborating with Jerry Bruckheimer on Gemini Man, a drama about an Nsa agent set to be assassinated by a cloned version of himself. Whoah. Variety reports that David Benioff (The Kite Runner, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) is working on the screenplay, wrapping things up after the story has spent a decade in development. »

L.A. Confidential's Curtis Hanson Directing Gemini Man

13 February 2009 2:30 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Wait, that's not fair, I have to mention Curtis Hanson's other more recent films: Wonder Boys, 8 Mile, In Her Shoes, and the atrocious Lucky You. Yes, he did also direct L.A. Confidential and Bad Influence and The River Wild, but that doesn't mean he's an amazing director. Anyway, Hanson's next project will be the action thriller Gemini Man that has been in development at Touchstone / Disney for a long time. The script, written by David Benioff (25th Hour, Troy, X-Men Origins: Wolverine), is about a a brilliant, aging assassin trying to leave the game whose employers dispatch a clone of his younger self to take him out. Gemini Man was originally pitched back in 1997 by Darren Lemke and was passed around to various writers, including Jonathan Hensleigh. This most recent draft, as we mentioned, was polished by Benioff. The good news is that Jerry Bruckheimer is producing, the »
