Making The (Up) Grade: Galaxy Quest

17 hours ago | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Paramount Home Entertainment has employed an interesting tactic in 2009 releasing certain films on standard-definition months ahead of their debut on Blu-ray. This was the case with the first three Friday the 13th films, and now it's the case with Galaxy Quest; I don't have the numbers in terms of either awareness or sales, but I wonder how many dutiful consumers pay attention to both editions and choose to wait, as opposed to buying one only to see it become obsolete just a few short months later. In any case, what's most important is that most of all of the films released this way thus far are fan favorites, and especially Galaxy Quest is a classic in its own right, all of which is why the new Blu-ray release is the subject of this week's "Making The (Up) Grade."

DVD review: Star Trek

13 November 2009 7:33 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Paramount, rental and retail

As reboots for an old, tired franchise go, this is nearly as good as Martin Campbell's Casino Royale, which similarly went back to basics to explain the character's formation. The "making of" extra makes it clear that director Jj Abrams felt it needed "a little more rock'n'roll". As well as speeding things up, he also made as much of it as real as he could, even using outdated concepts like miniatures. There are moments of real beauty alongside the complex plot explaining how Kirk and Spock came to meet. Diverse elements, including Simon Pegg's Scotty and a gaunt 78-year-old Leonard Nimoy are successfully worked in and, for anyone who has seen Zachary Quinto in Heroes, his casting as the contemporary Spock is, well, logical. The best Star Trek film to date, except for Galaxy Quest.

Pixar Looks 'Up,' 'Watchmen' Gets Ultimate And More In The DVD Report For November 10

10 November 2009 7:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

After last week's jam-packed release schedule led by "G.I. Joe," we're given an opportunity to breath today with only two new theatrical titles coming to market, along with an assortment of action-filled catalog offerings making their way to Blu-ray. This is your DVD Report for Tuesday, November 9.

Disney's Pixar was flying high after the critically and commercially acclaimed "Wall-e," so naturally they looked to the skies for their next animated outing, "Up." The film focuses on Carl Fredricksen, an elderly shut-in who aims to pay homage to his late wife by relocating to the top of a South American paradise the couple had always dreamed of visiting. Equipping his home with hundreds of helium balloons, the house lifts off its foundation and floats away, inadvertently taking with it a young wilderness scout who grows attached to the grumpy septuagenarian at the start of a grand adventure.

Sigourney Weaver and John C. Reilly Face the Rapids

4 November 2009 6:09 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Want to know why Sigourney Weaver has the comedic ability to do a great job in movies like Ghostbusters or Galaxy Quest? Or why John C. Reilly cracked you up so darn well in Step Brothers?

Take a look at Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm or the highly underappreciated Criminal. These guys have the acting chops to pull off drama effortlessly, and like the best comedic actors, have an understanding of every bit of the craft.

This is why I’m so excited for Miguel Arteta’s (Youth in Revolt) new film Cedar Rapids, which has added Weaver and Reilly to the cast alongside Alia Shawkat, The Office’s Ed Helms, and Anne Heche.

Rapids, developed by Helms and Phil Johnston (Flightless Birds), the film will “center on a wholesome and naive small-town Wisconsin man (Helms) who, when his role model dies, must represent his company at a regional insurance conference in Cedar Rapids, »

Jared & Jerusha Hess Interview Gentlemen Broncos

26 October 2009 9:38 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Writing and producing partners Jared and Jerusha Hess, who are also husband and wife, have made a career out of championing the underdog. With their quirky sense of humor and their inspiration from the unlikeliest of places, the duo’s success with “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre” have carved them a niche in Hollywood that they are quite happy with.

At the press day for “Gentlemen Broncos”, the Hesses talked about working with special effects for the first time and assembling the cast for this film about an outsider with big dreams trying to achieve what he wants to do in life. Continued after the jump:

Question: Where did you get the title, Gentlemen Broncos?

Jared: The title of the film comes from my mom, who had this really weird parenting book when I was growing up. I have five younger brothers, and it was this book, called So You Want to Raise a Boy? »

Awesome New Still of Sam Rockwell in ‘Gentlemen Broncos’

14 October 2009 11:53 AM, PDT | MovieSet.com | See recent MovieSet.com news »

Sam Rockwell has played some pretty entertaining characters, from his role as Guy in Galaxy Quest, to Zaphod Beeblebrox in The Hitchhiker’s Guide with several serious roles in-between, but get ready to see him in a hilarious new light as Bronco/Brutus in the upcoming comedy ‘Gentlemen Broncos.’

Gentlemen Broncos tells the story of Ben Purvis, a home schooled teenage outcast and aspiring fantasy writer who attends a fantasy convention and finds his idea, Bronco, ripped off by acclaimed novelist Ronald Chevalier, who has turned desperate for ideas.

In the film, Rockwell’s character changes from Bronco to Brutus after Chevalier plagiarizes Ben’s work. Gentlemen Broncos is directed by Nacho Libre and Napoleon Dynamite’s Jared Hess.

You can check out the first part (A-e) here or continue reading to see the other gems that were released in 1999.

Fight Club

Fight Club was a box office disappointment ten years ago, but it has gained a Huge cult following since - and it must have made an absolute mint on DVD. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton star in this David Fincher directed adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s now-famous novel. The film is another example of world perspective from a late 90s view point. »

Justin Long Joins Conspirator

14 October 2009 4:17 AM, PDT | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

Word reaches via The Hollywood Reporter that Justin Long has joined Robin Wright Penn and James McAvoy in The Conspirator, a historical drama set just after the Civil War that will be directed by Robert Redford.

The film tells the story of Mary Surrat, played by Wright Penn, a Confederate sympathiser who is tried as a conspirator in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Colonel Frederick Aiken, played by McAvoy, reluctantly agrees to help defend Surrat before a military tribunal. Long is onboard to play Col. Aiken's best friend, a man who lost a limb and grew a conscience in the Civil War.

The historical drama marks a first for Long, who is typically cast in more comedic roles, such as his turn in Die Hard 4.0 as the comic counterweight to Bruce Willis' John McClane, or his first role, in the successful Star Trek spoof, Galaxy Quest.

Warner Bros has no plans for Superman, screenwriter gives up

16 September 2009 7:08 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

It looks like Superman is dead on the big screen, for the time being at least.

Anyone hoping he would soar again following the recent formation at Warner Bros of a DC Entertainment (Dce) division, tasked with exploiting the potential of DC Comics heroes in other media such as movies, is going to be sorely disappointed.

Diane Nelson, the new president of Dce, told MTV: "We actually don't have any current plans for Superman."

She added: "We've obviously done a lot of great things behind the property in our history, and it's a key part of the family, but we don't have current plans behind Superman."

This would appear to rule out the rumoured involvement of V for Vendetta director James McTeigue with a reboot of Superman.

In addition, a movie based on the Bizarro version of Superman, an imperfect duplicate with opposite abilities, was earlier this year being developed »

You can relive a space classic in high definition this November. Galaxy Quest will be released in Blu-ray on November 17. We don't have any pricing details, but you can take a look at all this disc has to offer below. The film stars Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman.

They're not astronauts they only played them on TV. For four seasons, from 1979 to 1982, the crew of the Nsea Protector donned their uniforms and set out on thrilling and often dangerous missions in space - then their series was canceled.

The Thermians, a race of aliens, have mistaken intercepted television transmissions of the show for "historical documents." Arriving on earth, they whisk "Commander Peter Quincy Taggart" and his crew into space to help them defeat an all-too-real and very deadly adversary. With no script, no director, and no clue about real space travel, the actors have to turn in the »

It's Spy Games And Carnival Rides In This Week's DVD Report For Tuesday, August 25

25 August 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It's the last week of summer, so how is Hollywood celebrating? By releasing a home video slate of some of the most under-appreciated films of the year. From bickering spies to reluctant amusement park workers, August 25th brings together indie darlings and big-budget gems, and we're breaking it all down in today's DVD Report.

Let's kick it off with one of my favorite films of the year, Tony Gilroy's "Duplicity." The director's sophomore follow-up to "Michael Clayton," the Julia Roberts-Clive Owen spy yarn brings together two of the brightest and most expressive voices working today for a crafty globe-trotting adventure. Filled with twists and turns and superb acting, "Duplicity" wasn't exactly a smash hit at the cineplex, but it's more than worth your time. Sadly, if there's one thing worth griping about here, it's the rather lackluster bonus features...or should we say bonus feature. Both the »

Which was the best year for movies: 1977, 1994, or 1999?

5 August 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Last week, we posted a story about how 1984 was the best movie year ever when it comes to films you actually want to watch on a rainy day playing hooky from work. Movies like Ghostbusters, Bachelor Party, This is Spinal Tap, Footloose, and The Terminator. Movies that were the exact opposite of the highfalutin' offerings from 1939 -- the year critics always cite as the greatest Hollywood vintage of all time. Don't get us wrong, there were some decent high-brow movies from 25 years ago, too, like Amadeus and The Killing Fields. But mostly we were talking about movies that were, you know, fun. And while some of you agreed with us about 1984's greatness, others were outraged. Apoplectic. Even concerned for our sanity. Some even made cases for other "greatest years". And we listened. That's what we do. So now, we've tallied up your nominees and narrowed it down to your »

Tony Shalhoub Says Goodbye to Monk

4 August 2009 7:32 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The star of the hit USA Network series talks about the upcoming final season

Before the USA Network was the cable-dominating ratings juggernaut it is today, the network premiered the series Monk in 2002 and the series became a basic-cable hit, featuring the bizarre, clean-freak tactics of police detective Adrian Monk, portrayed by Tony Shalhoub. Now the series is entering its eighth and final season, which premieres on Friday, August 7 at 9 Pm Et on USA, and Shalhoub recently held a conference call to discuss the final season and the series as a whole. Here's what he had to say.

I was wondering, what's the lasting impression you want audience members to take from watching your show and watching you?

Tony Shalhoub: That's a great question. I think, if I had to choose one thing, I would say that I would want people to take away this idea that sometimes people's »

Bizarro Superman Movie is Still Alive

20 July 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

THR is reporting that Warner Bros is moving forward with several DC Comics' properties, including "Jonah Hex," "The Green Lantern," "Red" and "The Losers." "Superman" rights will soon leave the studio, but a third "Batman" movie could still happen. Are there any other DC Comics' project the studio is looking at? This past fall, Warners quietly hired three of DC's biggest writers -- Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison and Marv Wolfman -- to act as consultants and writers for its superhero line of movies. Johns has already worked up a new treatment for a "Flash" script, being written by Dan Mazeau. The projects Morrison and Wolfman are working on are in the early stages at Warners, whose execs declined to comment. The studio is also taking pitches on sci-fi hero Adam Strange and the underwater-breathing hero "Aquaman," to be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. Also in the pipeline: "Bizarro Superman" being written »

DC Comics Gives Updates on Their Movie Adaptations

19 July 2009 7:47 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

In a story from The Hollywood Reporter there are some interesting updates to a bunch of DC Comics properties. At present there are currently more DC Comics adaptations happening than at any other point since the company was bought by Warner Bros. in 1969.

Currently, The Losers will be starting principal photography this week in Puerto Rico. Jonah Hex just finished production in Louisiana. The Green Lantern recently reported that Ryan Reynolds will play the popular superhero. Fox also picked up the television series Human Target and lastly, DC set up Red at Summit Entertainment.

"One of the things that has differentiated us for most of the last 20 years is the depth of our library and the depth of the creative material that we've put out and the opportunities that creates for other media," stated DC Comics president Paul Levitz.

trailer break: ‘Aliens in the Attic’

Wow, Kevin Nealon? Really? Haven’t seen him around in a while. Guess he’s just perfect for the goofy sitcom-ish dad these days, huh? Oo, the aliens look like the cute little mining creatures in Galaxy Quest... you know, the ones that turned out to be vicious little buggers. And they appear to have borrowed the Gremlins dynamic: one nice one, a bunch of mean ones. Oh, look: crotch humor. Wonderful. Are we sure this is from writers of Madagascar and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit? Is “Robert Hoffman” someone who deserves to get his name mentioned like that in a trailer? Who the hell is he? Am I hopelessly uncool when it comes to stars the kids are all into these days? [Checks IMDb.] Does an appearance in Step Up 2: The Streets count as “hot”? If so, I really am out of it. And of course there’s a wacky grandma. »
