From Barry Mahon's Fairy Tale Trinity..., 25 May 2000
Author: Son of Cathode from New England

Considering the budget and the source, a not-bad telling of the classic fable about magic beans and a big, bad giant. Some good "kingdom-in-the-clouds" scenes. The giant looks pretty stoned. Possibly the most coherent and subdued of Barry Mahon's fairy tale trio (THUMBELINA and THE WONDERFUL LAND OF OZ the other, wilder cousins), this one has some passable effects (like climbing into the heavens) and some cute trick photography, but still comes across a bit talky for its own good. Everybody's all grooved-out with long hair and flower pants though, very hippie, very 60s. Told by the same wheezy female narrator that adorns THUMBELINA. Trivia fans: this may be the only kiddy film ever made to feature a glaring, on-screen French kiss in it, which isn't surprising since Mahon likely borrowed some of the actors for this flick from the sex films he was making at around the same time.
