Disney's $4 billion purchase of Marvel last month has major entertainment biz reverberations, one of those being that the Mouse House now gets to produce games based on the comic book giant's fabled superhero universe. Media consolidation on this scale isn't unexpected, especially in light of what's been happening in the game industry. Plenty of media giants have been buying or merging with outside studios in order to have their own in-hour game division: Disney's also bought Chicago-based Wideload Games (a small company founded by Alexander Seropian, whose first outfit, Bungie, was behind Halo and later sold to Microsoft); Warner Brothers has taken a controlling stake in famed (and bankrupt) arcade outfit Midway; and two years ago, Vivendi combined its gaming branch with Activision to form Activision Blizzard.
The thinking is that there's more money to be made when you can create your own video game spin-offs instead of licensing them out to third-party firms. »

Tyler Perry's Madea swung her weight at the box office again, handily topping a modest weekend at the box office with her latest appearance in Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself. The weekend also saw a passable start for the animated 9 and the failures of two thrillers, Sorority Row and Whiteout. Overall business was off seven percent from the same weekend last year, when Burn After Reading and Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys opened. I Can Do Bad All By Myself yanked an estimated $24 million out of approximately 3,200 screens at 2,255 sites. It was the third highest-grossing debut for a Tyler Perry movie, though slightly above average in terms of attendance, and a new high for one of his Fall releases, topping The Family That Preys ($17.4 million) and Why Did I Get Married? ($21.4 million). Though not named in the title like Perry's biggest hits, Madea was »

Now, I know what you’re thinking, ‘Dear lord, another stupid article about video game to movie adaptations?! Wtf JustPressPlay, this is stupid.’ Well shut your brain up. Because we’re not here to bitch and moan about the past failures or even the past successes. No sir. We’re classier than that (for this article). We could talk about something funny like a meta-adaptation like The Nines or (the less-real) The Movies: The Movie or the truly absurd like Pac Man: The Movie (which is actually being considered) – but we’d rather suggest Hollywood ditch the game genres where story is sacrificed on behalf of gameplay.
Because video game adaptations aren’t hopeless. They’re just adapting the wrong games – because Hollywood is full of morons who can’t see past initial game sales to the content of the games themselves. They’ve chosen genres where story is second »

Following on the heels of Stargate Sg-1 and Stargate Atlantis, the latest Stargate series — Stargate Universe, or Sgu — will include the franchise's first lesbian cast member: political attaché Camille Wray, played by veteran Chinese-American actress Ming-Na Wen (pictured, right).
The franchise began with the 1994 feature film Stargate, and has since spawned three live-action series, an animated series (Stargate Infinity), video games (Stargate Worlds), novels, and comics.
The Stargate universe is one in which soldiers and scientists from contemporary Earth interact with alien races possessing far superior technology via a top-secret Stargate (pictured below) that utilizes wormholes to quickly transport people and objects to cosmic locations far away.
Here's the official description of the new series from Sci Fi channel's press release about the series in February:
Edgier and younger in tone, Sgu will take the franchise in a dynamic new direction, appealing to longtime Stargate fans and first-time viewers alike. »

Narrowing down the worst of this genre is a real challenge, but we can.t do a top 19. That would be against the rules.
Top 10 Worst Video Game Adaptations
10. Doa: Dead or Alive . This movie has the right tone with bikini babes kicking ass, but the fights suck and there.s way too much story.
9. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider . Angelina Jolie looks great as Lara Croft but this movie was nonsense and even the action had no flow.
8. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within . They should have spent a little less time trying to make cartoons look like people and at least some time writing a story that mattered. »

We know it's going to happen. Scientists tell us that if something doesn't wipe us out in the next thousand years the death of the sun will. Such a fun thought. But what do scientists know? Those nerds. Here at Jpp we use movies to divine our futures - and goddammit the future looks bleak. To get an accurate sampling of every conceivable death for humankind we sampled 100 movies and divided the grim fates into 11 categories. We found it surprising that while there are certainly apocalyptic categories that stand out in our mind (thanks to blockbuster advertising) the ones we thought would be highest...aren't.
Here we go...
#11. Religious Apocalypse or the Anti-Christ
And you thought the Pope looked evil
Likelihood: 4%
Movies: The Omen (1976), The Devil's Advocate (1997), End of Days (1999), The Omen (2006)
Why worry? Apparently, as long as Arnold is alive he won't let the world come to an end (End of Days). So don't. »
