Welcome to another edition of The Pull List Comic Reviews! We’ve got a lot off good issues to get through, so let’s get to it. As always, Warning: Spoilers Ahead.
Pull Of The Week:
S.W.O.R.D. #1 – Marvel Comics – $3.99 Us
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artists: Steven Sanders, Jamie McKelvie
Score: 9.0
Spinning out of Joss Whedon and John Cassaday’s seminal Astonishing X-Men run, S.W.O.R.D. is the new title focusing on the organization entrusted to ensure that alien invasions are kept to a minimum. The Sentient World Observation and Response Department’s co-commander, Abigail Brand, has enough on her plate as it is, but having Henry Peter Gyrich – yes, That guy – as your co-commander simply can’t be a good thing.
After making a name for himself with the critically acclaimed Phonogram series, Marvel thought that writer Kieron Gillen would be able to handle the launch of a new, »

The vampire has been a key figure in folklore, literature, television and cinema. Its popularity, at present, has never been so high. It is easy to see the appeal: immortality and sex. Since death is the fate that awaits us all, a creature that we invent and imbue with an indeterminate lifespan, captivates the collective imagination like no other. Due to sexual liberalism and relaxed censorship of the 1960s, the erotic sensibilities inherent in the mythology were allowed to fruition in cinema. What once was implied, could now be shown in all its sexy glory (see the films of Jean Rollin). Gothic horror and romanticism may be the classic home of the vampire, but in cinema, they have found a new place to spread wider-reaching nightmares.
In recent times, the everlasting monster has been tamed. Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Saga saw them turn into something akin to vegetarians and teen heart-throbs, »

[Update: Word is that del Toro himself will be playing a creature in the film!]
Guillermo del Toro (director of Hellboy and Blade II) dished to Total Film in a 10-page Q&A about his forthcoming movie adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. For those of you who somehow missed the phenomenon of Peter Jackson’s Lord of The Rings Trilogy, The Hobbit is a prequel to The Fellowship of the Ring (aka the first movie in Lotr), also written by Tolkien. There’s been some excitement around the question of what del Toro will do with the monsters in The Hobbit and he had this to say about the most anticipated beast in the bunch, Smaug, the dragon who sleeps on the vast treasure sought after by the film’s lead, Bilbo Baggins:
“I think one of the designs I’m the proudest of is Smaug. Obviously he took the longest. Early in production I came up with a very strong idea that »

Yesterday, we posted some of Eric Ditzian's interview with Sir Ian McKellen, who plays the wizard Gandalf in the "Lord of the Rings" and upcoming "Hobbit" movies. In one of the more compelling bits, the actor revealed that the scripts for the two films with feature plotlines culled from other J.R.R. Tolkien sources.
McKellen wouldn't elaborate any further than that, but a recent interview Guillermo del Toro gave to TotalFilm may shed some additional light on what the Gandalf actor was referring to. "We are respecting the structure established by Professor Tolkien because the order of the adventures in 'The Hobbit' is well known to generations and generations of kids," the director said. "You don’t want to be moving stuff like that." So what's new?
"We will be integrating Gandalf’s comings and goings [into the script] because he does disappear in the book quite often," he continued. "So, as opposed to the book, »

Director Guillermo del Toro has recently discussed the visions he has for the creatures to be seen in "The Hobbit". To Total Film, he opened up about the work he did for the dragon Smaug, the spiders of Mirkwood, the Wargs and others, saying "The way I phrased it to Weta, I said we would keep the DNA in the same gene pool as the Rings trilogy, but that we would generate a different type of character."
"For example, in the trilogy most of the creatures are brutish or inarticulate. In The Hobbit, the creatures speak: Smaug has beautiful lines of dialog; the Great Goblin has beautiful lines of dialog; many creatures do," the 45-year-old went on explaining. "So we had to design them with a different approach because you are not just designing things that are scary."
The Academy Award-nominated filmmaker added further, "I also wanted some of the »

Pull Of The Week:
Lobo: Highway to Hell #1 (of 2) – DC Comics – $6.99 Us
Writer: Scott Ian Artist: Sam Keith
Score: 8.5
You’re sitting there, asking yourself “How in all that is holy is Lobo: Highway to Hell the Pull of the Week?” Believe me, I’m asking myself that very same question. You see I’ve never dug Lobo. I’ve read a good chunk of his various issues over the years and I’ve never seen the attraction to the character, but seeing as variety is the spice of life, I figured I’d give this a shot. »

The following seems like a non-story, but things have been quiet around the planned reboot of The Crow lately, so I figured, why not remind people it’s actually happening?
According to The Geek Files over at Coventry Telegraph, executives at Relativity Media are excited about the script turned in by director Stephen Norrington, and the project has entered the casting stages. The Crow, for those unfamiliar with the property, revolves around a rock musician murdered with his girlfriend; he returns from the dead one year later, seeking revenge on those responsible.
Originally a graphic novel, Alex Proyas directed the 1994 movie version starring Brandon Lee as the titular character. Three movie sequels and a TV show followed, but by 2005’s The Crow: Wicked Prayer, the series was going direct-to-video.
When interviewed, Norrington hinted his version of The Crow would be realistic and almost documentary-like. This would be a significant contrast from the gothic, »

You kids today, with your Marvel Studios and your top-notch directors. Many of you are too young to remember just what ugly treatments comic books received in the 1980s and 1990s. Oh sure, there was Tim Burton's Batman, but treatments like David Hasselhoff's Nick Fury: Agent of Shield were the norm. When a Thor movie was kicked around, the only requirement was muscles and blonde hair. In the 1990s, there was one man that fit that description: Fabio.
A funny little flashback has surfaced on Colleen Doran's blog, which has prompted a delightful trip back in time at Mania. In 1997, Fabio decided that he wanted to play Thor, so he approached animation director Seth Kearsley, and they cooked up a storyline with the help of Henry Gilroy. As Mania points out, this was not a Marvel movie , but it casually borrowed a few elements. The result, pictured to your right, »

Historical settings are severely underused in films today. Once upon a time in a cheesier Hollywood, you could find pulpy adventures set among knights, Vikings, or cowboys. They were horribly inaccurate, but I admire and appreciate their desire to just run with another time or place. Nowadays, historical films are considered too expensive. No one makes a movie set in Rome or medieval England just for fun. But I think we're starting to see a shift towards that mentality (after all, how much more expensive are Roman breastplates over CG?) with films like Centurion, Ironclad, Season of the Witch and now a little project called Mortis Rex.
Variety has the scoop on this intriguing movie-to-be, which will be the directorial debut of Hellboy writer Peter Briggs. Mortis Rex is set in 122 A.D. (or C.E. if we want to be proper), and centers on a disgraced Roman war hero. »

Producer Jim Jacks has joined the supernatural action thriller "Mortis Rex," which will be "Hellboy" screenwriter Peter Briggs’ directorial debut. Dominic Ianno is also on board as an executive producer, and the film will shoot next spring on location in Italy, Eastern Europe and the U.K., according to Variety
“Mortis Rex” – which is Latin for “King of the Dead” – is set in 122 Ad. The story focuses on a disgraced Roman war hero who is given one last opportunity to redeem himself when he is sent to a Roman garrison plagued by a series of brutal and unexplained killings.
Briggs – who first broke into the industry with his spec script for “Aliens vs. Predator” – has been working to get “Mortis Rex” off of the ground for years. The news that Jacks, one of the producers of the "Mummy" films, is locked in with his company Frelaine Productions, »

When a good writer decides to step up to the director's chair, I almost always get both nervous and excited. We usually know that they can meticulously craft a story on paper, but do they have the keen visual eye and management skills to bring together hundreds of people and bring those pages to life? Hellboy screenwriter Peter Briggs will take on this task as Variety reports he will be directing Mortis Rex, a story set in 122 Ad that "centers on a disgraced Roman war hero who is given a last opportunity to redeem his reputation when sent to a Roman garrison beset by a spate of brutal and unexplained killings." Might be pretty damn cool. The film is being produced under Frelaine Productions by Jim Jacks who was responsible for bringing The Mummy franchise to Universal. The hope is for Mortis Rex to start shooting in the spring, taking »

Variety reports that Peter Briggs (pictured) will direct the supernatural actioner Mortis Rex for Frelaine Productions. One of the producers is Jim Jacks, whose credits include the Mummy series and a few films for Sam Raimi (who named David Paymer’s Drag Me To Hell character after him).
Mortis is set in Rome circa 122 A.D. and focuses on a disgraced war hero who gets a chance to salvage his reputation when he’s assigned to investigate strange and violent killings at a garrison. The producing team also includes Stuart Pollok, Matthew Dench and Marisa Kagan; Briggs, who co-wrote the first Hellboy feature, first broke onto the screenwriting scene with a highly regarded but eventually abandoned Alien Vs. Predator spec script, and has subsequently worked on Freddy Vs. Jason and an aborted period version of The War Of The Worlds. Shooting on Mortis Rex is scheduled to start next spring on British, »
