Top Ten Working American Directors
A list like this is tricky to the point of madness. However, I'm going to save you the trouble by saying it right here, right now: Most of the choices on this list are obvious. There's a reason why certain names continually pop up whenever conversation drifts toward great American films. So there. I said it.
Yet, how do you weigh the likes of Francis Ford Coppola, a genius who delivered some of the all-time greatest films, but fizzled out 25 or so years ago, against a filmmaker like Woody Allen who has worked consistently for decades churning out both brilliant gems and disposable time wasters? How do you compare either of these directors against an auteur such as Spike Jonze who has only opened two films so far, but both are masterpieces?
In the end I just went with my gut. I knew there were »

Steven Soderbergh doing a straightforward action movie was a surprise enough, but Steven Soderbergh casting an Mma fighter as his star? Okay, so Gina Carano has been in a movie or two, usually in very small roles and basically playing herself (a female fighter), and she certainly has the look, although she seems to have “bulked up” a bit for my taste in the last few years. In an interview with Empire, Soderbergh expands more on the movie, and how he wants to approach it. “I’d been wanting to make a spy action film for a while, but hadn’t really determined what I was going to bring to it that would distinguish it from the traditional approach. Then I thought, ‘Why don’t I just build it around [Gina Carano]? She can actually break people in half.’ I was interested in doing something ultra-realistic.” While the script is still being »

You might have read about Steven Soderbergh making an action thriller with Mma fighter Gina Carano and been interested, but perhaps not actually excited. That's about where I was, though the involvement of his screenwriter from The Limey, Lem Dobbs, was definitely a point in the movie's favor. But with Soderbergh describing the movie as a combination of old-school Bond and John Boorman's standard-setting weirdo action thriller Point Blank, my interest in Knockout just shot up to stratospheric levels. Learning that Soderbergh and Dobbs were going all Point Blank on this one shouldn't come as a big surprise. Soderbergh is a big enough fan of Point Blank that he appeared on the commentary track on the film's Us DVD release, and he acknowledges that he borrowed from the movie left and right for The Limey. (The commentaries on both Point Blank and especially The Limey are essential listening; the »

In our second look at the work of director Steven Soderbergh, Sound on Sight takes on three of the celebrated director's crime-related films - though they're crimes of different stripes. His latest, The Informant!, takes on white-collar crime, and stars Matt Damon as a corporate whistleblower who may not be as innocent as he seems. His caper flick Out of Sight is a tale of robbery gone wrong and right, with a little romance thrown in, and The Limey, starring Terence Stamp, acts as Soderbergh's take on the ever-popular revenge thriller genre. The acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh may be one of the most respected men in the business, but even he seems to have trouble finding a little extra cash these days. Now we all know what happened with is true-life sports tale, Moneyball, but by all accounts that isn't the only film that he is having trouble securing funding for. But on the bright side, it turns out it was much easier to sell studios a sexy spy thriller than it was a tale of number-crunchers. According to Variety, Lionsgate has snapped up Soderbergh's next slated flick, Knockout and secured financing for the action drama with Relativity Media offering to foot the bill.
The film is being described as in the "vein of La Femme Nikita" and will star Gina Carano. Soderbergh will be working with Lem Dobbs, who also worked on The Limey to write the script. Now Carano might »

A few months ago, Steven Soderbergh was getting ready to shoot Moneyball with Brad Pitt when the movie fell apart at the very last minute [1]. Although there have since been reports [2] that Aaron Sorkin would step in to rewrite the script and keep the project alive, Soderbergh isn't dwelling on it. He has already regrouped and moved on to his next flick: an espionage-themed action-thriller called Knockout. Soderbergh is partnering with Relativity Media for the film, and in a somewhat unorthodox deal, he will waive his upfront salary in order to retain part ownership of the film. Clearly the movie is being set up to keep the budget low, but it sounds like it will have a lot more mainstream potential than some of his experimental films. The story, which is being written by Lem Dobbs (The Limey, The Score), is said to be "in the vein of The Bourne Identity »

Just because Steven Soderbergh isn't able to push on with "Moneyball," it doesn't mean that the "Che" director won't look towards sports for his next feature film -- in fact, he's got his eye on the world of mixed martial arts.
According to Variety, Soderbergh will direct Mma fighter Gina Carano in "Knockout," a spy thriller fully financed by Relativity Media with a script from "The Limey" screenwriter Lem Dobbs. The movie marks Carano's on-screen debut as a leading lady, but the plot won't focus on the fighter-turned-actress's day job -- as it turns out, "Knockout" has a lot more in common with Jason Bourne than Chuck Liddell.
"Knockout" tells the story of a young girl on the wrong side of the tracks (Carano) who is "given a second chance to use her skills for constructive purposes." The film is expected to be a flat out action flick that will »

Steven Soderbergh has rebounded from the collapse of his Moneyball project and is crafting a Knockout for us. The title of his next film, Knockout is an action movie that sounds as if it has the potential to be a breakout vehicle for Mma womens fighter-turned-actor Gina Carano.
In the movie Carano will play a tough woman who grew up on the wrong side of the town. After graduating from the school of hard knocks she finds a way to use her fighting skills to carve out a life for herself. The script is being finished by Lem Dobbs, the screenwriter who worked with Soderbergh on two of his earlier works, The Limey and Kafka.
Soderbergh was introduced to Carino when he saw her fight in the mixed martial arts circuit. Prior to this big break she appeared in a couple of reality TV series about the sport and as »

Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh is looking to spice up his resume by adding a little action, and he's picked a mixed martial arts fighter to help him.
The director of Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Erin Brockovich, Ocean's Eleven, and Traffic will next direct Knockout, a spy thriller in the mold of a 007 movie, but with a female lead. Soderbergh discovered his Knockout leading lady, Gina Carano, a Muay Thai-trained fighter, on the Mma circuit where she had a professional fight record of 7-1.
The script for Knockout is by Lem Dobbs, who previously wrote Kafka and The Limey for Soderbergh. Soderbergh is expected to surround Carano with name actors in supporting roles, but no other names have been announced. Production is slated to begin in late January, 2010.

Steven Soderbergh is pulling no punches with the latest choice of hot non-actress set to star in his next film Knockout. Having spotted mixed martial arts madame Gina Carano on the fighting circuit, the director has worked out a script to integrate her fighting prowessinto the plot of a spy thriller.Known for his quirky movie choices, Soderbergh has moved in the last two years between a big budget heist (Ocean's Thirteen), revolutionary biopic (Che Parts I and II), filth-filled drama (The Girlfriend Experience) and fattening up Matt Damon (for The Informant!). Adding a girl-fight to a roster which also boasts a musical about the life of Cleopatra (Cleo) could never have seemed so predictable.Knockout is written by Lem Dobbs - who also penned The Limey and Kafka for Soderbergh - and will see the inexperienced actress Carano (also known in America as Gladiator Crush) playing a girl from »

With The Informant! due out soon, director Steven Soderbergh is lining up his next project. Variety says he.s staying within the spy genre to make a thriller called Knockout. Don.t expect more Matt Damon though. Soderbergh is casting an acting newbie, a mixed-martial arts fighter and former American Gladiator named Gina Carano, as his lead. She plays a girl from the wrong side of the tracks given a second chance. She puts her fighting skills to use for more constructive purposes. This may sound a lot Vin Diesel.s xXx, but odds are it.ll be more like Tarantino.s Death Proof. Soderbergh has made his obligatory semi-annual Hollywood movie in The Informant, and with an unknown in the lead, this smells like yet another return to making experimental movies that no one wants to see. Plus it was written by Lou Dobbs, who also wrote The Limey, »

It has now been confirmed that Steven Soderbergh's new project would be Relativity Media's "Knockout". The studio issued a press release, confirming also that martial arts fighter Gina Carano is indeed in talks to join the cast. In an arrangement very unique to the industry, Soderbergh will forgo his upfront salary and retain ownership of the film, along with Relativity.
"We couldn't be more thrilled to be working with a world-class filmmaker like Steven on this project, which is clearly in his sweet spot," said Ryan Kavanaugh, CEO of Relativity. "Steven's deal is structured to help control the budget and align the filmmaker and studio to play for the upside. As Steven is sure to make a movie that delivers, we all succeed. More and more filmmakers understand this model, which perfectly pairs our mutual interest. This is the future."

Bouncing back from Moneyball, Steven Soderbergh will next direct the spy-thriller film Knockout. Similar to Bubble and The Girlfriend Experience, Soderbergh has gone outside the traditional Hollywood circuit for casting. Variety reports that Gina Carano, a mixed martial arts fighter, will star in the film, her screen starring debut. Previously, Carano had a small role in the indie film Blood and Bone and voiced a character in the video game Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. In Knockout Carano will play a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who is given a second chance to use her skills for constructive purposes. Soderbergh will surround Carano will name actors in supporting roles. Lem Dobbs, whose credits include Dark City, The Score and the Soderbergh-directed The Limey, penned the screenplay. The mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano is to make her big screen starring debut in Steven Soderbergh's Knockout, a spy drama he's comparing to James Bond but also sounds to me a little like Luc Besson's Nikita. Described by producer Ryan Kavanaugh as "mainstream action film with universal appeal for a reasonable budget" this picture sounds like heaven on a slice of warm toast. The screenplay for Knockout has been written by Lem Dobbs, who had a hand in writing Dark City and was previously responsible for scripting Soderbergh's The Limey and Kafka, as well as Edward Ford, reputedly one of the great unproduced screenplays of all time. The boy can write. According to Variety, Soderbergh will be filming in the New Year, with locations in the Us, Ireland and Turkey - at least. This sounds like it could be a proper, square-on-the-nose spy caper. Here's hoping »

Steven Soderbergh is going from directing pornstars (Sasha Grey in The Girlfriend Experience) to mixed martial arts circuit fighters as Variety reports his next film will be a spy thriller with Mma fighter Gina Carano making her feature film debut. The film is titled Knockout and Relativity Media will fully finance with plans to begin filming in late January and expectations a distributor will be locked quickly. Seeing this poster of Steven Soderbergh's latest film, The Informant!, got me thinking about how much I enjoy the creativity behind his one sheets. There's the ode to the 1940s studio system with The Good German, the pulpy feel of Out of Sight, then there's the fragmented visual style with The Limey and The Girlfriend Experience. In a time when most filmmakers are just happy audiences show up to the theaters, it's nice to see there's at least one who's still nostalgic for the oldest form of movie marketing (though I have no idea if he has a hand in the creation of these, I like to think he does Update: Soderbergh's office says he always has a hand in doing them, and most of the time they're done in house). Here's some of my favorite... »

Turning 70 is something everyone (who doesn't die first) will do. Hitting your 47th year as a consistently employed screen actor is not something many actors can do. So here's to longevity and to silver fox Terence Stamp on his 70th birthday. Whether you primarily think of him as The Limey, "Bernadette" in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, "General Zod" in Superman II or Billy Budd himself, I hope that you occasionally think of him.
