For those of us hoping that Paul Verhoeven may one day return to his violent and campy b-movie roots, it still isn't looking likely to happen anytime soon. Until then, the only thing we have to turn to are the various direct-to-video sequels that have been churned out from his filmography. We've seen (or more likely, avoided) sequels to Starship Troopers, Basic Instinct and Hollow Man, and both Total Recall and Robocop are currently being prepped for remakes. Which leaves only one of his American films still untouched: the Razzie Award-winning Showgirls. Earlier this week a story surfaced over at German site Extratipp [1] about a potential sequel to Showgirls called Showgirls: The Story of Hope being written and directed by a guy named Marc Vorlander (whose IMDb page [2] is a completely blank slate). The movie would supposedly revolve around a minor character from the first film named Hope (Rena Riffel »

Chace Crawford, who has been officially announced to play leading male character Ren McCormack in "Footloose" remake, has just revealed about his preparation for the musical drama film which will begin shooting soon. In an interview with MTV during 2009 Teen Choice Awards, the "Gossip Girl" star stated that he has undergone a dance training though he is busy shooting for the CW series.
"I'm training right now in New York, and it's pretty intense," Chace said on his preparation before filming the remake of Kevin Bacon's 1984 film. He then compared himself to Willard, a character in original "Footloose", who doesn't know how to dance until Ren teaches him. "I'm more like [Chris Penn's character] Willard, trying to learn the dances at this point. I'm getting muscles that I didn't even know were there worked out," he admitted.
During the interview, Chace who called the film as "a modern adaptation" also talked about the script. »

Following The Wolfman, and the news that The Bride of Frankenstein is on the slab and ready for the electrodes, comes an update on David S. Goyer's The Invisible Man.Goyer told Shock Till You Drop that "I've finished a draft and... Universal are breathing down my neck to get the revisions done. It's a movie they'd like to make."Invisible men have turned up in movies of varying quality by John Carpenter (Memoirs of an Invisible Man), Paul Verhoeven (Hollow Man) and Stephen Norrington (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) but a straight movie adaptation of Hg Wells' original novel hasn't happened since James Whale's 1933 classic. And it doesn't seem to be happening here, since Goyer has talked about the character "being turned into a secret agent and sent into imperial Russia". He's also talked of genre-straddling and Steampunk.Goyer's pedigree as a writer of great high-concept movies is undisputed (Batman, »

Those paparazzi are at it again (see their last round here), and this time it's TMZ (via INFDaily) dropping in on the Arizona set of Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes)'s remake of Piranha.
The tabloid site/show/rag snagged a pic of Elisabeth Shue (Adventures In Babysitting, Hollow Man) looking like she's been on the Linda Hamilton/Sarah Connor training program.

The Total Recall remake (which we first told you about back in February) is moving forward.
The Hollywood Reporter states that Kurt Wimmer (Street Kings, Ultraviolet) has joined the production to pen the new screenplay
Neal H. Moritz and his Original Films banner producing "a contemporary version of the film" for Columbia Pictures.
The original film was directed by Paul Verhoeven (Robocop, Hollow Man, Starship Troopers), and starred Schwarzenegger as a man on a horrifying sci-fi journey to Mars after a visit to Rekall, Inc., a company specializing in virtual tours and memory implantation.
Toby Jaffe (Rock Star, Life Or Something Like It) is overseeing on behalf of Original Film. Matt Tolmach (Paul Blart: Mall Cop) and Sam Dickerman (The Basketball Diaries) are overseeing for Columbia.
Fact: Total Recall appeared on the cover of Fangoria several times, including Fango #95 (pictured) in a feature on it's "Eye-Popping FX!" »

Halle Berry is in discussions to headline The Surrogate for 20th Century Fox, a thriller about a couple who discovers their surrogate mother is insane. Think Baby Mama only less funny.
No official deal has been reached, but she’s being considered for the female portion of the couple, according to Variety.
Berry would be returning to the screen after a short hiatus to have a child of her own. The last movie she starred in was Things We Lost in the Fire in 2007. Just in case you forgot, she won an Oscar in 2002, which I can only assume she’s been using to fend off the critics since then with some truly terrible movie choices. Just from personal experience, the best way to deal with a crazy pregnant lady is to threaten to make them watch Catwoman.
Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall, Basic Instinct) was announced as the director just days before. »

Halle Berry wants to be good and scared again. Not satisfied with being chased around an insane asylum in “Gothika,” Berry is interested in tangling with a crazed baby mama in “The Surrogate,” the latest from director Paul Verhoeven (”Basic Instinct”).
As we reported last week, “The Surrogate” has nothing in common with the similarly titled upcoming sci-fi movie starring Bruce Willis. This “Surrogate” is based on Kathryn Mackel’s 2004 novel. Forced by medical circumstances into hiring a surrogate mother, a childless couple settles on an apparently perfect candidate. Unfortunately, the woman turns out to be insane. Should’ve checked those references better, eh? According to The Hollywood Reporter, Berry would play the would-be mother, not the insane surrogate. While official negotiations haven’t begun with Berry, Fox is eager for their “X-Men” star to sign on. Seeing as she is fresh off a long maternity leave, she could certainly »

X-men star Halle Berry is set to star in new thriller The Surrogate, to be directed by Paul Verhoeven in his return to Hollywood film-making.
X-Men franchise producer Ralph Winter is also involved with the 20th Century Fox project, which is based on the 2004 book by Kathryn Mackel.
The story centres on a couple desperate to have a child who find to their horror that the surrogate they hired to carry their baby is insane.
Berry - who starred as weather-manipulating Storm in the X-Men franchise - would play the wife wanting the child, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Verhoeven made a name directing the classics Total Recall and Basic Instinct. But then his success faltered. His 1995 film Showgirls won seven Golden Raspberry Awards including worst film and worst director.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that Paul Verhoeven needs to make more movies. Hell, if you haven’t ‘suffered’ through the absolutely perverse delights of The 4th Man, you’re not really alive! And don’t get me started on RoboCop - absolute perfection. In fact, even with Showgirls and Hollow Man in mind, I’d confidently say the man has never made a terrible film. And now that I’ve shredded my credibility, let’s move on to the news...
The Hollywood Reporter brings word that one of the greatest living directors is eying The Surrogate for 20th Century Fox's adaptation of the 2004 novel by Kathryn Mackel about a couple desperate to have a child who find themselves in an unbearable position when they find out the surrogate they hired to carry their baby is insane. Never one to shy away from perversity or disturbing material, »

Hard to believe, but it's been almost 10 years since Paul Verhoeven made his last Hollywood film. Hollow Man may not have been his strongest effort, but I remember it being somewhat unfairly criticized because people thought the effects weren't up to snuff. Either way, since then he has directed only one movie: Black Book, a World War II movie about a Jewish singer trying to survive in Nazi-occupied Holland. It is the most expensive Dutch film made to date, and was fairly well-received critically, even though some people were disappointed to see Verhoeven moving away from sci-fi to something a little more serious. The good news is, Verhoeven isn't ready to completely turn his back on Hollywood just yet. He has reportedly signed on to direct a thriller called The Surrogate (not to be confused with Jonathan Mostow's Surrogates [1]) for 20th Century Fox. Based on the book by Kathryn Mackel, »

Not to be confused with the Bruce Willis sci-fi thriller Surrogates, Dutch director Paul Verhoeven is returning to America to direct a thriller called The Surrogate for 20th Century Fox. Based on the book by Kathryn Mackel, the story centers on a couple desperate to have a child who find themselves in an unbearable position when they find out the surrogate they hired to carry their baby is insane. The original draft was written Roderick Taylor and Bruce Taylor (The Brave One), however Verhoeven might tweak their version. This was originally setup at Fox Atomic, but moved to Fox when that company was shut down. Verhoeven last directed the Dutch WWII drama Black Book in 2006, but hasn't done anything for Hollywood since directing Hollow Man in 2000. Verhoeven is always all over the map, so I can never say whether anything will be that good just because he's attached to ... »

The last time Paul Verhoeven directed a Hollywood movie, it was 2000’s “Hollow Man”. Before that, the Dutch filmmaker was famous for movies like “Starship Troopers” and “Basic Instincts”, and infamous for “Showgirls”. After abandoning Hollywood for his native Netherlands with 2006’s “Black Book”, Verhoeven seems ready to give Hollywood a second chance, and will be returning to America to direct the thriller “The Surrogate”, not to be confused with the Bruce Willis sci-fi actioner “Surrogates”. THR reports that Verhoeven will be adapting the novel by Kathryn Mackel, about a desperate, childless couple who finds the perfect surrogate to carry their child to term, only to realize she’s out of her flippin’ mind. You know, batshit crazy. Verhoeven will be directing from a script by Roderick Taylor and Bruce Taylor. Originally set up at its genre arm Fox Atomic, Fox has now moved the project over to its main studio, »

Sorry about the sensationalist title, but we couldn't resist it. Porn star Riley Steele has been added to the cast of Piranha 3D and we figure that being a porn star in a piranha movie is the next best thing to wearing a red shirt in Star Trek. The staff at CinemaSpy suspect she's going to be fish fodder, not least because her contribution to the movie has been described thus by the film's producer Mark Canton:
"It's crystal clear that Riley Steele adds yet another dimension to Piranha 3-D. Her natural beauty will light up the screen as she frolics with the hordes of spring break partygoers in our very contemporary, scary 3-D movie."
Anyone whose contribution to a film is described as "frollicking" should be concerned about their character's longevity. Perhaps not Ms. Steele, though. According to Samantha Lewis, CEO of Steele's employer, the adult filmmaking company Digital Playground, »

It's astonishing to learn Elisabeth Shue has now signed on to star in Alexandre Aja's remake Piranha 3-D. I don't say this because I am not looking forward to the film, because I am, but because Shue had made a career for herself after I remember seeing her for the first time in 1984 in The Karate Kid, then in 1987's Adventures in Babysitting, followed by her co-starring role with Tom Cruise in Cocktail (a guilty pleasure of mine), she played Jennifer in Back to the Future Part II and III and in 1995 she hit the pinnacle as she was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her role in Leaving Las Vegas. Fast forward to today and the last time I saw her she was playing herself in the vastly over-rated Hamlet 2. I guess I should look at what happened as a natural progression. Roles in Hollow Man »

Rumors have been swimming about pinning actress Elisabeth Shue to Alexandre Aja's Piranha 3D . Turns out, they're correct. Moviehole confirmed her involvement, citing two sources on board this redo of Joe Dante's film, and says Shue will play "Sheriff Julie Forester, a take-charge authority figure in the community of Lake Victoria." Forester is also the mother of one of the lead characters. Aja's films have often thrown the spotlight on strong female protagonists. Shue's past genre credits have shown she can certainly stand up to nasty CG critters (like Kevin Bacon in Hollow Man ). Piranha 3D begins rolling soon in Arizona. Dimension Films releases it in theaters on March 19, 2010. »
